Surah An-Nur - Word by Word

(The Light)

bismillaahirrahmaanirrahiim
1

سُوْرَةٌ اَنْزَلْنٰهَا وَفَرَضْنٰهَا وَاَنْزَلْنَا فِيْهَآ اٰيٰتٍۢ بَيِّنٰتٍ لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُوْنَ ١

sūratun
سُورَةٌ
A Surah -
anzalnāhā
أَنزَلْنَٰهَا
We (have) sent it down
wafaraḍnāhā
وَفَرَضْنَٰهَا
and We (have) made it obligatory
wa-anzalnā
وَأَنزَلْنَا
and We (have) revealed
fīhā
فِيهَآ
therein
āyātin
ءَايَٰتٍۭ
Verses
bayyinātin
بَيِّنَٰتٍ
clear
laʿallakum
لَّعَلَّكُمْ
so that you may
tadhakkarūna
تَذَكَّرُونَ
take heed
[This is] a Surah which We have sent down and made [that within it] obligatory and revealed therein verses of clear evidence that you might remember. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 1)
Tafsir
2

اَلزَّانِيَةُ وَالزَّانِيْ فَاجْلِدُوْا كُلَّ وَاحِدٍ مِّنْهُمَا مِائَةَ جَلْدَةٍ ۖوَّلَا تَأْخُذْكُمْ بِهِمَا رَأْفَةٌ فِيْ دِيْنِ اللّٰهِ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُؤْمِنُوْنَ بِاللّٰهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْاٰخِرِۚ وَلْيَشْهَدْ عَذَابَهُمَا طَاۤىِٕفَةٌ مِّنَ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ ٢

al-zāniyatu
ٱلزَّانِيَةُ
The fornicatress
wal-zānī
وَٱلزَّانِى
and the fornicator
fa-ij'lidū
فَٱجْلِدُوا۟
[then] flog
kulla
كُلَّ
each
wāḥidin
وَٰحِدٍ
one
min'humā
مِّنْهُمَا
of them
mi-ata
مِا۟ئَةَ
(with) hundred
jaldatin
جَلْدَةٍۖ
lash(es)
walā
وَلَا
And (let) not
takhudh'kum
تَأْخُذْكُم
withhold you
bihimā
بِهِمَا
pity for them
rafatun
رَأْفَةٌ
pity for them
فِى
concerning
dīni
دِينِ
(the) religion of Allah
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
(the) religion of Allah
in
إِن
if
kuntum
كُنتُمْ
you
tu'minūna
تُؤْمِنُونَ
believe
bil-lahi
بِٱللَّهِ
in Allah
wal-yawmi
وَٱلْيَوْمِ
and the Day
l-ākhiri
ٱلْءَاخِرِۖ
the Last
walyashhad
وَلْيَشْهَدْ
And let witness
ʿadhābahumā
عَذَابَهُمَا
their punishment
ṭāifatun
طَآئِفَةٌ
a group
mina
مِّنَ
of
l-mu'minīna
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
the believers
The [unmarried] woman or [unmarried] man found guilty of sexual intercourse – lash each one of them with a hundred lashes, and do not be taken by pity for them in the religion [i.e., law] of Allah, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 2)
Tafsir
3

اَلزَّانِيْ لَا يَنْكِحُ اِلَّا زَانِيَةً اَوْ مُشْرِكَةً ۖوَّالزَّانِيَةُ لَا يَنْكِحُهَآ اِلَّا زَانٍ اَوْ مُشْرِكٌۚ وَحُرِّمَ ذٰلِكَ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ ٣

al-zānī
ٱلزَّانِى
The fornicator
لَا
(will) not
yankiḥu
يَنكِحُ
marry
illā
إِلَّا
except
zāniyatan
زَانِيَةً
a fornicatress
aw
أَوْ
or
mush'rikatan
مُشْرِكَةً
a polytheist woman
wal-zāniyatu
وَٱلزَّانِيَةُ
and the fornicatress -
لَا
(will) not
yankiḥuhā
يَنكِحُهَآ
marry her
illā
إِلَّا
except
zānin
زَانٍ
a fornicator
aw
أَوْ
or
mush'rikun
مُشْرِكٌۚ
a polytheist man
waḥurrima
وَحُرِّمَ
And is forbidden
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
that
ʿalā
عَلَى
to
l-mu'minīna
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
the believers
The fornicator does not marry except a [female] fornicator or polytheist, and none marries her except a fornicator or a polytheist, and that [i.e., marriage to such persons] has been made unlawful to the believers. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 3)
Tafsir
4

وَالَّذِيْنَ يَرْمُوْنَ الْمُحْصَنٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَأْتُوْا بِاَرْبَعَةِ شُهَدَاۤءَ فَاجْلِدُوْهُمْ ثَمٰنِيْنَ جَلْدَةً وَّلَا تَقْبَلُوْا لَهُمْ شَهَادَةً اَبَدًاۚ وَاُولٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ الْفٰسِقُوْنَ ۙ ٤

wa-alladhīna
وَٱلَّذِينَ
And those who
yarmūna
يَرْمُونَ
accuse
l-muḥ'ṣanāti
ٱلْمُحْصَنَٰتِ
the chaste women
thumma
ثُمَّ
then
lam
لَمْ
not
yatū
يَأْتُوا۟
they bring
bi-arbaʿati
بِأَرْبَعَةِ
four
shuhadāa
شُهَدَآءَ
witnesses
fa-ij'lidūhum
فَٱجْلِدُوهُمْ
then flog them
thamānīna
ثَمَٰنِينَ
(with) eighty
jaldatan
جَلْدَةً
lashe(s)
walā
وَلَا
and (do) not
taqbalū
تَقْبَلُوا۟
accept
lahum
لَهُمْ
their
shahādatan
شَهَٰدَةً
testimony
abadan
أَبَدًاۚ
ever
wa-ulāika
وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ
And those
humu
هُمُ
they
l-fāsiqūna
ٱلْفَٰسِقُونَ
(are) the defiantly disobedient
And those who accuse chaste women and then do not produce four witnesses – lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept from them testimony ever after. And those are the defiantly disobedient, (QS. [24] An-Nur: 4)
Tafsir
5

اِلَّا الَّذِيْنَ تَابُوْا مِنْۢ بَعْدِ ذٰلِكَ وَاَصْلَحُوْاۚ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُوْرٌ رَّحِيْمٌ ٥

illā
إِلَّا
Except
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
tābū
تَابُوا۟
repent
min
مِنۢ
after
baʿdi
بَعْدِ
after
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
that
wa-aṣlaḥū
وَأَصْلَحُوا۟
and reform
fa-inna
فَإِنَّ
Then indeed
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
ghafūrun
غَفُورٌ
(is) Oft-Forgiving
raḥīmun
رَّحِيمٌ
Most Merciful
Except for those who repent thereafter and reform, for indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 5)
Tafsir
6

وَالَّذِيْنَ يَرْمُوْنَ اَزْوَاجَهُمْ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَّهُمْ شُهَدَاۤءُ اِلَّآ اَنْفُسُهُمْ فَشَهَادَةُ اَحَدِهِمْ اَرْبَعُ شَهٰدٰتٍۢ بِاللّٰهِ ۙاِنَّهٗ لَمِنَ الصّٰدِقِيْنَ ٦

wa-alladhīna
وَٱلَّذِينَ
And those who
yarmūna
يَرْمُونَ
accuse
azwājahum
أَزْوَٰجَهُمْ
their spouses
walam
وَلَمْ
and not
yakun
يَكُن
have
lahum
لَّهُمْ
for them
shuhadāu
شُهَدَآءُ
witnesses
illā
إِلَّآ
except
anfusuhum
أَنفُسُهُمْ
themselves
fashahādatu
فَشَهَٰدَةُ
then (the) testimony
aḥadihim
أَحَدِهِمْ
(of) one of them
arbaʿu
أَرْبَعُ
(is) four
shahādātin
شَهَٰدَٰتٍۭ
testimonies
bil-lahi
بِٱللَّهِۙ
by Allah
innahu
إِنَّهُۥ
that he
lamina
لَمِنَ
(is) surely of
l-ṣādiqīna
ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ
the truthful
And those who accuse their wives [of adultery] and have no witnesses except themselves – then the witness of one of them [shall be] four testimonies [swearing] by Allah that indeed, he is of the truthful. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 6)
Tafsir
7

وَالْخَامِسَةُ اَنَّ لَعْنَتَ اللّٰهِ عَلَيْهِ اِنْ كَانَ مِنَ الْكٰذِبِيْنَ ٧

wal-khāmisatu
وَٱلْخَٰمِسَةُ
And the fifth
anna
أَنَّ
that
laʿnata
لَعْنَتَ
(the) curse of Allah
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
(the) curse of Allah
ʿalayhi
عَلَيْهِ
(be) upon him
in
إِن
if
kāna
كَانَ
he is
mina
مِنَ
of
l-kādhibīna
ٱلْكَٰذِبِينَ
the liars
And the fifth [oath will be] that the curse of Allah be upon him if he should be of the liars. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 7)
Tafsir
8

وَيَدْرَؤُا عَنْهَا الْعَذَابَ اَنْ تَشْهَدَ اَرْبَعَ شَهٰدٰتٍۢ بِاللّٰهِ اِنَّهٗ لَمِنَ الْكٰذِبِيْنَ ۙ ٨

wayadra-u
وَيَدْرَؤُا۟
But it would prevent
ʿanhā
عَنْهَا
from her
l-ʿadhāba
ٱلْعَذَابَ
the punishment
an
أَن
that
tashhada
تَشْهَدَ
she bears witness
arbaʿa
أَرْبَعَ
four
shahādātin
شَهَٰدَٰتٍۭ
testimonies
bil-lahi
بِٱللَّهِۙ
by Allah
innahu
إِنَّهُۥ
that he
lamina
لَمِنَ
(is) surely of
l-kādhibīna
ٱلْكَٰذِبِينَ
the liars
But it will prevent punishment from her if she gives four testimonies [swearing] by Allah that indeed, he is of the liars. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 8)
Tafsir
9

وَالْخَامِسَةَ اَنَّ غَضَبَ اللّٰهِ عَلَيْهَآ اِنْ كَانَ مِنَ الصّٰدِقِيْنَ ٩

wal-khāmisata
وَٱلْخَٰمِسَةَ
And the fifth
anna
أَنَّ
that
ghaḍaba
غَضَبَ
the wrath of Allah
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
the wrath of Allah
ʿalayhā
عَلَيْهَآ
(be) upon her
in
إِن
if
kāna
كَانَ
he is
mina
مِنَ
of
l-ṣādiqīna
ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ
the truthful
And the fifth [oath will be] that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he was of the truthful. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 9)
Tafsir
10

وَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ اللّٰهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهٗ وَاَنَّ اللّٰهَ تَوَّابٌ حَكِيْمٌ ࣖ ١٠

walawlā
وَلَوْلَا
And if not
faḍlu
فَضْلُ
(for) the Grace of Allah
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
(for) the Grace of Allah
ʿalaykum
عَلَيْكُمْ
upon you
waraḥmatuhu
وَرَحْمَتُهُۥ
and His Mercy
wa-anna
وَأَنَّ
and that
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
tawwābun
تَوَّابٌ
(is) Oft-Returning (to Mercy)
ḥakīmun
حَكِيمٌ
All-Wise
And if not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy... and because Allah is Accepting of Repentance and Wise. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 10)
