Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Hajj Verse 30

Mufti Taqi Usmani

Having said that, whoever observes reverence of the things sanctified by Allah, it is good for him with his Lord. And permitted to you are the cattle, except those mentioned to you through recitation (of the verses). So refrain from the filth of the idols and refrain from a word of falsehood,

That is so. And whoever honours the rituals of Allah, it is best for them in the sight of their Lord. The ˹meat of˺ cattle has been made lawful for you, except what has ˹already˺ been recited to you.[[ See {5:3}.]] So shun the impurity of idolatry, and shun words of falsehood.

Ruwwad Translation Center

Such [is the pilgrimage]; whoever honors the sacred rituals of Allah, it is best for him with his Lord. All sacrificial animals have been made lawful for you except what is recited to you. So shun the impurity of idolatry and shun the words of falsehood.

All that; and whosoever venerates the sacred things of God, it shall be better for him with his Lord. And permitted to you are the flocks, except that which is recited to you. And eschew the abomination of idols, and eschew the speaking of falsehood,

All this [is ordained by God]: anyone who honours the sacred ordinances of God will have good rewards from his Lord. Livestock have been made lawful to you, except for what has been explicitly forbidden. Shun the filth of idolatrous beliefs and practices and shun false utterances.

Thus it is. And whosoever suspecteth the sacred ordinances of Allah, it shall be better for him with his Lord. And allowed unto you are the cattle, save that which hath been rehearsed unto you; so avoid the pollution of the idols, and avoid the word of falsehood.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Such (is the Pilgrimage); whoever honours the sacred rites of Allah, for him it is good in the Sight of his Lord. Lawful to you (for food in Pilgrimage) are cattle, except those mentioned to you (as exception); but shun the abomination of idols, and shun the word that is false,-

Such (was the purpose of building the Kabah). Whosoever, then, venerates Allah's sanctities will find it to be good for him in the sight of his Lord. Cattle have been made lawful for you except those mentioned to you (as unlawful). So shun the abomination of idols and shun all words of falsehood.

Ahmed Ali

Apart from this, whoever respects the sacred ordinances of God, will find a better reward for him with his Lord. You are allowed to eat all cattle except those already mentioned to you. Avoid the repugnance of idols, and false and frivolous talk.

Ahmed Raza Khan

So it is; and whoever reveres the sacred things of Allah – that is then a goodness for him in the sight of his Lord; the inarticulate animals are lawful to you except those the forbidding of which is recited to you, therefore shun the filth of idols, and avoid false speech.

Ali Quli Qarai

That, and whoever venerates the sacraments of Allah, that is better for him with his Lord. You are permitted [animals of] grazing livestock except for what will be recited to you. So avoid the abomination of idols, and avoid false speech,

All that (is what God ordained concerning the Hajj). So whoever venerates God’s sanctities will find it to be the best for him in his Lord’s sight. Cattle have been made lawful for you (for sacrifice and food) except what has already been mentioned to you (as unlawful). So, shun the loathsome evil of idol-worship and shun all words of falsehood (never say or consider or legislate anything contrary to revealed commandments concerning the lawful and the unlawful),

Amatul Rahman Omar

That is (the purpose behind the construction of the House), so he who honours the things declared sacred by Allâh (will find that) it is good for him in the sight of his Lord. And (remember that) all the cattle are made lawful to you except those already mentioned to you (as unlawful in the Qur´ân). And abstain from unclean practice of idolatry and shun false speech.

English Literal

That and who magnifies/makes great God`s ordered prohibitions, so it is better for him at his Lord, and the camels/livestock is permitted/allowed for you, except what is being read/recited on (to) you, so avoid the obscenity/filth from the idols/idolized statues, and avoid the lie`s/falsehood`s word/opinion and belief .

Faridul Haque

Qaribullah & Darwish

All that; and whosoever venerates the sacred rites of Allah it shall be better for him with his Lord. The flocks are lawful to you, except that which is recited to you. Therefore, avoid the filth of idols and avoid speaking falsely,

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

That and whoever honors the sacred things of Allah, then that is better for him with his Lord. The cattle are lawful to you, except those (that will be) mentioned to you. So shun the Rijs of the idols, and shun false speech.

Wahiduddin Khan

Such is God's commandment. Whoever honours that which is declared sacred by God may be sure that it counts for good in the sight of his Lord. Livestock is lawful for you, except that which has already been explicitly forbidden. Then shun the abomination of the deities and shun all falsehood.

Talal Itani

All that. Whoever venerates the sanctities of God—it is good for him with his Lord. All livestock are permitted to you, except what is recited to you. So stay away from the abomination of idols, and stay away from perjury.

Tafsir jalalayn

[That is] that (dhlika, the predicate of an implied subject, in other words; `the matter' or `the affair' is `that which has been mentioned'). And whoever venerates the sacraments of God, namely, those things whose violation is forbidden, that, veneration of them, shall be better for him with his Lord, in the Hereafter. And cattle are lawful for you, to consume, after [their] slaughter, except for that which has been recited to you, as being unlawful, in [the verse]; Forbidden to you is carrion ... [Q. 5;3]. The exceptive clause [above] is a discontinuous one; but it could also be [taken as] continuous, so that the prohibition is of that which has died and so on. So avoid the abomination of idols (mina'l-awthn; min here is explicative [as opposed to partitive], in other words, `[avoid abomination], namely, idols'), and avoid false speech, that is to say, ascribing partners to God in your [uttering of the] talbiya, or [avoid] bearing false witness;

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

The Reward for avoiding Sin

Allah says;

ذَلِكَ

Such (is the Pilgrimage);

`This is what We have commanded you to do in the rituals (of Hajj), and this is the great reward that the person who does that will gain.'

وَمَن يُعَظِّمْ حُرُمَاتِ اللَّهِ

and whoever honors the sacred things of Allah,

means, whoever avoids disobeying Him and does not transgress that which is sacred, and regards committing sin as a very serious matter,

فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّهُ عِندَ رَبِّهِ

then that is better for him with his Lord.

means, he will attain much good and a great reward for doing that. Just as the one who does acts of obedience will earn a great reward, so too, the one who avoids sin will earn a great reward.
Cattle are Lawful

Allah says;

وَأُحِلَّتْ لَكُمُ الاْأَنْعَامُ إِلاَّ مَا يُتْلَى عَلَيْكُمْ

The cattle are lawful to you, except those (that will be) mentioned to you.

means, `We have made permissible for you all the An`am (cattle etc.),' and Allah has not instituted things like Bahirah or a Sa'ibah or a Wasilah or a Ham.

إِلاَّ مَا يُتْلَى عَلَيْكُمْ

except those mentioned to you.

the prohibition of;
Al-Maytah,

blood,

the flesh of swine,

and that on which Allah's Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering (that which has been slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allah, or has been slaughtered for idols)

and that which has been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by the goring of horns --

and that which has been (partly) eaten by a wild animal -- unless you are able to slaughter it (before its death) -

and that which is sacrificed (slaughtered) on An-Nusub.

This was the view of Ibn Jarir, who recorded it from Qatadah.
The Command to shun Shirk and Lying

Allah says;

فَاجْتَنِبُوا الرِّجْسَ مِنَ الاْاَوْثَانِ وَاجْتَنِبُوا قَوْلَ الزُّورِ



So shun the Rijis of the idols, and shun false speech.

From this it is clear what Ar-Rijs means, i.e., avoid the abomination, which means idols. Shirk is mentioned in conjunction with false speech, as in the Ayah;

قُلْ إِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ رَبِّيَ الْفَوَحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ وَالاِثْمَ وَالْبَغْىَ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ وَأَن تُشْرِكُواْ بِاللَّهِ مَا لَمْ يُنَزِّلْ بِهِ سُلْطَـناً وَأَن تَقُولُواْ عَلَى اللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ


Say;"(But) the things that my Lord has indeed forbidden are;
Al-Fawahish (immoral sins) whether committed openly or secretly,

sins (of all kinds),

unrighteous oppression,

joining partners with Allah for which He has given no authority, and

saying things about Allah of which you have no knowledge". (7;33)

This includes bearing false witness.
In the Two Sahihs it was reported from Abu Bakrah that the Messenger of Allah said;

أَلَا أُنَبِّــيُكُمْ بِأَكْبَرِ الْكَبَايِرِ

Shall I not tell you about the worst of major sins?

We said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah."

He said;

الاِْشْرَاكُ بِاللهِ وَعُقُوقُ الْوَالِدَيْنِ

أَلَا وَقَوْلُ الزُّورِ أَلَا وَشَهَادَةُ الزُّور

and indeed giving false statements, and indeed bearing false witness...

and he kept on repeating it until we wished that he would stop."

Imam Ahmad recorded that Khuraym bin Fatik Al-Asadi said,

"The Messenger of Allah prayed As-Subh (Al-Fajr), and when he had finished, he stood up and said;

عَدَلَتْ شَهَادَةُ الزُّورِ الاِْشْرَاكَ بِاللهِ عَزَّ وَجَل

Bearing false witness is on a par with the association of others with Allah.

Then he recited this Ayah;

فَاجْتَنِبُوا الرِّجْسَ مِنَ الاْاَوْثَانِ وَاجْتَنِبُوا قَوْلَ الزُّورِ



حُنَفَاء لِلَّهِ غَيْرَ مُشْرِكِينَ بِهِ

So shun the Rijs of the idols, and shun lying speech. Hunafa' Lillah, not associating partners unto Him;

Allah says
