Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Anbya Verse 97

Al-Anbya [21]: 97 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَاقْتَرَبَ الْوَعْدُ الْحَقُّ فَاِذَا هِيَ شَاخِصَةٌ اَبْصَارُ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْاۗ يٰوَيْلَنَا قَدْ كُنَّا فِيْ غَفْلَةٍ مِّنْ هٰذَا بَلْ كُنَّا ظٰلِمِيْنَ (الأنبياء : ٢١)

wa-iq'taraba
وَٱقْتَرَبَ
And has approached
l-waʿdu
ٱلْوَعْدُ
the promise
l-ḥaqu
ٱلْحَقُّ
[the] true
fa-idhā
فَإِذَا
then behold
hiya
هِىَ
[it]
shākhiṣatun
شَٰخِصَةٌ
(are) staring
abṣāru
أَبْصَٰرُ
(the) eyes
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
(of) those who
kafarū
كَفَرُوا۟
disbelieved
yāwaylanā
يَٰوَيْلَنَا
"O woe to us!
qad
قَدْ
Verily
kunnā
كُنَّا
we had been
فِى
in
ghaflatin
غَفْلَةٍ
heedlessness
min
مِّنْ
of
hādhā
هَٰذَا
this;
bal
بَلْ
nay
kunnā
كُنَّا
we were
ẓālimīna
ظَٰلِمِينَ
wrongdoers"

Transliteration:

Waqtarabal wa'dul haqqu fa-izaa hiya shaakhisatun absaarul lazeena kafaroo yaawailanaa qad kunna fee ghaflatim min haaza bal kunnaa zaalimeen (QS. al-ʾAnbiyāʾ:97)

English / Sahih Translation:

And [when] the true promise [i.e., the resurrection] has approached; then suddenly the eyes of those who disbelieved will be staring [in horror, while they say], "O woe to us; we had been unmindful of this; rather, we were wrongdoers." (QS. Al-Anbya, ayah 97)

and the True Promise draws near, then it will so happen that the eyes of the disbelievers shall remain upraised (in terror, and they will say,) “Alas to us! We were in negligence about this; rather we were transgressors.”

and the time for the fulfilment of the true promise of Allah draws near, whereupon the eyes of those who disbelieved will stare in fear, and they will say: "Woe to us, we were indeed heedless of this; nay, we were wrongdoers."

And the certain promise (of Doom) comes near. Then the eyes of unbelievers will be fixed in horror, (and they will cry:) "Ah, woe betide, we were indeed heedless of this, and were oppressors and unjust."

And the True Promise has come near – thereupon the eyes of the disbelievers will become fixed, staring wide; saying “Woe to us – we were in neglect of this, but in fact we were unjust.”

and the true promise draws near [to its fulfillment], behold, the faithless will look on with a fixed gaze: ‘Woe to us! We have certainly been oblivious of this! Indeed, we have been wrongdoers!’

And the true promise of the Last Hour has been close at hand, and look, the eyes of those who stubbornly disbelieve stare in horror fixedly, exclaiming: "Woe to us! Indeed we have lived in heedlessness and forgetfulness of this. Ah! We truly have been wrongdoers (who have, most of all, wronged our own selves)!"

And when the time (of the fulfillment) of the true promise (about the destruction of the forces of falsehood and materialism as represented by Gog and Magog) draws near, behold! the eyes of those who do not believe (in the triumph of truth), will be transfixed (and they will exclaim), `Ah, woe to us! we were really forgetful of this (day), nay, we were of course unjust.´

English Literal

And the promise, the truth , neared/approached, so then those who disbelieved`s eye sights it is (are) staring at . "Oh our calamity , we had been in negligence/disregard from this, rather we were unjust/oppressors."

And the True Promise has come near - thereupon the eyes of the disbelievers will become fixed, staring wide; saying "Woe to us - we were in neglect of this, but in fact we were unjust."

Until Yagug and Magug (Gog and Magog, Lawless tribes or Lawlessness itself) are let loose (through every barrier), and they hasten out of every mound (rock, nook and cranny).

And the true promise (Day of Resurrection) shall draw near (of fulfillment). Then (when mankind is resurrected from their graves), you shall see the eyes of the disbelievers fixedly stare in horror. (They will say): "Woe to us! We were indeed heedless of this; nay, but we were Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.)."

And the true promise shall draw near. Then, you shall see the eyes of the disbelievers fixedly staring in horror. (They will say:) "Woe to us! We were indeed heedless of this -- nay, but we were wrongdoers."

when the true promise of God draws near, those who denied the truth will stare in amazement, crying, "Woe to us! We have been so heedless of this. Indeed, we were wrongdoers."

The promise of truth has drawn near. The eyes of those who disbelieved will stare in horror: “Woe to us. We were oblivious to this. In fact, we were wrongdoers.”

Tafsir jalalayn

And the true promise, that is, the Day of Resurrection, draws near and behold, when, the gaze of the disbelievers will be fixed, on that Day, because of its severity, saying; `O (y is for exclamation) woe to us!, [this is] our destruction! Verily, in the [life of the] world, we were oblivious to this, Day. Nay, but we were doing wrong', to our souls by our denial of the messengers.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَاقْتَرَبَ الْوَعْدُ الْحَقُّ

And the true promise (Day of Resurrection) shall draw near.

the Day of Resurrection, when these terrors and earthquakes and this chaos will come to pass. The Hour has drawn nigh and when it comes to pass, the disbelievers will say;"This is a difficult Day."

Allah says;

فَإِذَا هِيَ شَاخِصَةٌ أَبْصَارُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا

Then, you shall see the eyes of the disbelievers fixedly staring in horror.

because of the horror of the tremendous events that they are witnessing.

يَا وَيْلَنَا

Woe to us!

means, they will say, `Woe to us!'

قَدْ كُنَّا فِي غَفْلَةٍ مِّنْ هَذَا

We were indeed heedless of this,

means, in the world.

بَلْ كُنَّا ظَالِمِينَ



nay, but we were wrongdoers.

they will admit their wrong- doing at the time when that will not help them at all
