Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Anbya Verse 66

Al-Anbya [21]: 66 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قَالَ اَفَتَعْبُدُوْنَ مِنْ دُوْنِ اللّٰهِ مَا لَا يَنْفَعُكُمْ شَيْـًٔا وَّلَا يَضُرُّكُمْ ۗ (الأنبياء : ٢١)

Transliteration:

Qaala afata'budoona min doonil laahi maa laa yanfa'ukum shai'anw wa laa yadurrukum (QS. al-ʾAnbiyāʾ:66)

English / Sahih Translation:

He said, "Then do you worship instead of Allah that which does not benefit you at all or harm you? (QS. Al-Anbya, ayah 66)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

He said, “Do you then worship, beside Allah, what does neither benefit you in the least nor harm you?

He rebuked ˹them˺, “Do you then worship—instead of Allah—what can neither benefit nor harm you in any way?

(So Abraham) said: "Then why do you worship something apart from God that cannot profit you or do you harm?

He said, “What! You worship, instead of Allah, one that neither benefits you nor harms you?”

(Abraham) said: "Then, do you worship, instead of God, that which cannot benefit you in any way, nor harm you?

(Abraham) said, `Do you then worship, apart from Allâh, the things which can do no good to you, (who are their worshippers), nor can do harm to (those of) you (who are their destroyers).

English Literal

He said: "Do you worship from other than God what does not benefit you a thing, and nor harm you?"

He said, "What! You worship, instead of Allah, one that neither benefits you nor harms you?"

Then were they confounded with shame and said, "You knew well that these cannot speak."

Abraham said, "So, do you worship something instead of God that can neither benefit you nor harm you?

Tafsir jalalayn

He said, `Do you then worship, besides God, that is, in His place, that which cannot benefit you in any way, with regard to [granting you] provision and otherwise, nor harm you?, in any way if you were not to worship it?

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Do you then worship besides Allah, things that can neither profit you nor harm you!

meaning, if they cannot speak and they can neither benefit you nor harm you, then why do you worship them instead of Allah

أُفٍّ لَّكُمْ وَلِمَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ أَفَلَ تَعْقِلُونَ
