Al-Anbya [21]: 3 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

لَاهِيَةً قُلُوْبُهُمْۗ وَاَسَرُّوا النَّجْوَىۖ الَّذِيْنَ ظَلَمُوْاۖ هَلْ هٰذَآ اِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْۚ اَفَتَأْتُوْنَ السِّحْرَ وَاَنْتُمْ تُبْصِرُوْنَ (الأنبياء : ٢١)

lāhiyatan
لَاهِيَةً
Distracted
qulūbuhum
قُلُوبُهُمْۗ
their hearts
wa-asarrū
وَأَسَرُّوا۟
And they conceal
l-najwā
ٱلنَّجْوَى
the private conversation
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
ẓalamū
ظَلَمُوا۟
[they] wronged
hal
هَلْ
"Is
hādhā
هَٰذَآ
this
illā
إِلَّا
except
basharun
بَشَرٌ
a human being
mith'lukum
مِّثْلُكُمْۖ
like you?
afatatūna
أَفَتَأْتُونَ
So would you approach
l-siḥ'ra
ٱلسِّحْرَ
the magic
wa-antum
وَأَنتُمْ
while you
tub'ṣirūna
تُبْصِرُونَ
see (it)?"

Transliteration:

Laahiyatan quloobuhum; wa asarrun najwal lazeena zalamoo hal haazaa illaa basharum mislukum afataa toonas sihra wa antum tubsiroon (QS. al-ʾAnbiyāʾ:3)

English / Sahih Translation:

With their hearts distracted. And those who do wrong conceal their private conversation, [saying], "Is this [Prophet] except a human being like you? So would you approach magic while you are aware [of it]?" (QS. Al-Anbya, ayah 3)

their hearts paying no heed. And the wrongdoers whisper in secret, “This one is nothing but a mortal like you. Would you then go along with sorcery while you can see (the reality)?”

with their hearts ˹totally˺ distracted. The evildoers would converse secretly, ˹saying,˺ “Is this ˹one˺ not human like yourselves? Would you fall for ˹this˺ witchcraft, even though you can ˹clearly˺ see?”

with their hearts heedless. The wrongdoers whisper to one another in secret, “Is this but a human being just like yourselves? Will you then follow his magic, although you openly see?”

with frivolous hearts. The evildoers conferred in secret: ‘Is this man anything but a mortal like yourselves? Are you going to fall under his spell with your eyes wide open?’

In sport being their hearts. And those who do wrong keep secret their private discourse this is but a human being like unto yourselves; will ye then betake yourselves to magic while ye know?

their hearts being set on other concerns. The wrong-doers whisper to one another: "This person is no more than a mortal like yourselves. Will you, then, be enchanted by sorcery while you see?"

Their minds are lost in frivolous pastimes; and the evil-doers discuss secretly: "Is he not but only a man like you? Then why are you taken in by magic seeingly?"

their hearts set on diversions. The wrongdoers secretly whisper together, [saying], ‘Is this [man] not a human being like yourselves? Will you give in to magic with open eyes?’

With hearts set on passing pleasures; yet those who lead in wrongdoing, especially by associating partners with God, confer among themselves in great secret: "Is this (not) but a mortal like you? Will you, then, yield to magic while you see it patently?"

While their minds are inattentive. Those of them who have transgressed the limits, keep their counsels (against the Prophet of their time) secret (and say), `He is only a human being like yourselves. Will you be seduced by his skillful eloquence while you see and know?´

Their hearts/minds are being distracted and they kept the confidential talk secret, those who caused injustice/oppression, is that except (a) human similar/equal to you? Do you do the magic/sorcery and you are seeing/understanding?

their hearts are diverted. The harmdoers mutter to one another: 'Is this anything else but a human like yourself? What, will you follow sorcery with your eyes open'

With their hearts occupied. Those who do wrong, conceal their private counsels, (saying): "Is this more than a human being like you Will you submit to magic while you see it"

their hearts are distracted and forgetful. The wrongdoers confer together secretly, saying, "Is not this man a mortal like you? Will you succumb to magic with your eyes open?"

Their hearts distracted, the wrongdoers confer secretly, “Is this anything but a mortal like you? Will you take to sorcery, with open-eyes?”

Tafsir jalalayn

with their hearts preoccupied, heedless of its meanings. And they are secret in [their] conference, [their] speech, [they] the evildoers (alladhna zalam, a substitution for the [third person plural indicator] ww of wa-asarr'l-najw, `and they are secret in conference') `Is this, namely, Muhammad (s), other than a [mortal] human being like yourselves?, and so what he produces is [mere] sorcery. Will you then take [to] sorcery, [will] you [succumb and] follow it, even though you are able to see?', [even though] you know that it is sorcery?

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

They said;

...
أَفَتَأْتُونَ السِّحْرَ وَأَنتُمْ تُبْصِرُونَ

Will you submit to magic while you see it!

meaning, will you follow him and be like one who submits to magic when he knows that it is magic!

Allah said in response to their fabrications and lies;
