Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Anbya Verse 29

Mufti Taqi Usmani

Should any one of them say, “I am god besides Him”, We will recompense him with Jahannam (Hell). This is how We recompense the transgressors.

Whoever of them were to say, “I am a god besides Him,” they would be rewarded with Hell by Us. This is how We reward the wrongdoers.

And who says from them: "That I am a god from other than Him." So that/this, We reimburse him Hell, that is how We reimburse the unjust/oppressive."

And whoever of them says, “I am a god besides Him,” We will reward him with Hell. Thus We reward the wrongdoers.

Tafsir jalalayn

And should any of them say, `I am a god besides Him', that is, [besides] God, in other words, [a god] other than Him -- and this is Ibls, who summoned [others] to worship his soul and commanded that it be obeyed -- such a one We will requite with Hell. Thus, in the same way that We requite him, We requite wrong- doers, idolaters.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَمَن يَقُلْ مِنْهُمْ إِنِّي إِلَهٌ مِّن دُونِهِ


And they stand in awe. And if any of them should say;"Verily, I am a god besides Him,"

meaning, whoever claims to be a god instead of Allah, i.e., alongside Allah,

فَذَلِكَ نَجْزِيهِ جَهَنَّمَ كَذَلِكَ نَجْزِي الظَّالِمِينَ



such We should recompense with Hell. Thus We recompense the wrongdoers.

meaning, everyone who says this. This is a conditional sentence, and the condition stated does not necessarily have to take place.

This is like the Ayat;

قُلْ إِن كَانَ لِلرَّحْمَـنِ وَلَدٌ فَأَنَاْ أَوَّلُ الْعَـبِدِينَ

Say;"If the Most Gracious had a son, then I am the first of worshippers." (43;81)

لَيِنْ أَشْرَكْتَ لَيَحْبَطَنَّ عَمَلُكَ وَلَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَـسِرِينَ

If you join others in worship with Allah, (then) surely, (all) your deeds will be in vain, and you will certainly be among the losers. (39;65
