Transliteration:

Law kaana feehimaaa aalihatun illal laahu lafasadataa; fa-Subhaanal laahi Rabbil 'Arshi 'ammaa yasifoon (QS. al-ʾAnbiyāʾ:22)

English / Sahih Translation:

Had there been within them [i.e., the heavens and earth] gods besides Allah, they both would have been ruined. So exalted is Allah, Lord of the Throne, above what they describe. (QS. Al-Anbya, ayah 22)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

Had there been gods beside Allah, in the heavens and the earth, both of them would have fallen in disorder. So pure is Allah, the Lord of the Throne, from what they describe.

Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Had there been other gods besides Allah in the heavens or the earth, both ˹realms˺ would have surely been corrupted. So Glorified is Allah, Lord of the Throne, far above what they claim.

Ruwwad Translation Center

If there had been gods besides Allah in the heavens and earth, both realms would have fallen in disorder. Glory be to Allah – Lord of the Throne – far above what they ascribe [to Him].

A. J. Arberry

Why, were there gods in earth and heaven other than God, they would surely go to ruin; so glory be to God, the Lord of the Throne, above that they describe!

Abdul Haleem

If there had been in the heavens or earth any gods but Him, both heavens and earth would be in ruins: God, Lord of the Throne, is far above the things they say:

Abdul Majid Daryabadi

Had there been in between the twain gods except Allah surely the twain would have gone to ruin. Hallowed be Allah, the Lord of the Throne, from that which they utter!

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

If there were, in the heavens and the earth, other gods besides Allah, there would have been confusion in both! but glory to Allah, the Lord of the Throne; (High is He) above what they attribute to Him!

Abul Ala Maududi

Had there been any gods in the heavens and the earth apart from Allah, the order of both the heavens and the earth would have gone to ruins. Glory be to Allah, the Lord of the Throne, Who is far above their false descriptions of Him.

Ahmed Ali

Had there been gods apart from God, both (the heavens and the earth) would have been despoiled. Much too glorious is God, the Lord of the mighty throne, for things they assert!

Ahmed Raza Khan

If other than Allah, there were Gods* in the heavens and the earth, they would be destroyed; therefore Purity is to Allah, Owner of the Throne, from the matters that they fabricate. (* Which is not possible. ** The heavens and the earth.)

Ali Quli Qarai

Had there been any gods in them other than Allah, they would surely have fallen apart. Clear is Allah, the Lord of the Throne, of what they allege [concerning Him].

Ali Ünal

But the fact is that had there been in the heavens and the earth any deities other than God, both (of those realms) would certainly have fallen into ruin. All-Glorified God is, the Lord of the Supreme Throne, in that He is absolutely above all that they attribute to Him.

Amatul Rahman Omar

Had there been in them (- the heaven and the earth) other gods beside Allâh, then surely both would have gone to ruin (because of chaos, disorder and confusion). Glorified then be Allâh the Lord of the Throne of power, far above what they attribute (to Him).

English Literal

If (there) was in them (B) (the skies and the Earth) gods, except God, they (B) would have been corrupted ,so praise/glory (to) God, Lord (of) the throne about what they describe/categorize.

Faridul Haque

If other than Allah, there were Gods * in the heavens and the earth, they would be destroyed; therefore Purity is to Allah, Owner of the Throne, from the matters that they fabricate. (* Which is not possible. ** The heavens and the earth.)

Hamid S. Aziz

Or have they chosen gods from the earth who can raise the dead?

Hilali & Khan

Had there been therein (in the heavens and the earth) gods besides Allah, then verily both would have been ruined. Glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Throne, (High is He) above what they attribute to Him!

Maulana Mohammad Ali

Or have they taken gods from the earth who give life?

Mohammad Habib Shakir

If there had been in them any gods except Allah, they would both have certainly been in a state of disorder; therefore glory be to Allah, the Lord of the dominion, above what they attribute (to Him).

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

If there were therein gods beside Allah, then verily both (the heavens and the earth) had been disordered. Glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Throne, from all that they ascribe (unto Him).

Muhammad Sarwar

Had there been other deities in the heavens and the earth besides God, both the heavens and the earth would have been destroyed. God, the Lord of the Throne, is too Glorious to be as they think He is.

Qaribullah & Darwish

Had there been gods in heaven or earth, other than Allah, both would indeed have been ruined. Exalted be Allah, Lord of the Throne, above that they describe.

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

Had there been therein (in the heavens and the earth) gods besides Allah, then verily, both would have been ruined. Glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Throne, (High is He) above all that (evil) they associate with Him!

Wahiduddin Khan

If there had been in the heavens and on the earth, other deities besides God, both the heavens and earth would be ruined. God, Lord of the throne, is far above that which they ascribe to Him.

Talal Itani

If there were in them gods other than God, they would have gone to ruin. So glory be to God, Lord of the Throne, beyond what they allege.

Tafsir jalalayn

Had there been in [either of] them, that is, [in] the heavens and the earth, gods other than God, that is, other than Him, the two would have surely deteriorated, they [the heavens and the earth] would have deviated from their observed order, because counteractive forces would exist among such [gods], as is usually the case, when there is more than one ruler, that there is counteraction and a lack of consensus regarding something. So glory be to God -- an exaltation -- the Lord, the Creator, of the Throne, al-kurs, above what they ascribe, the disbelievers, to God, of His having a partner and otherwise.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

لَوْ كَانَ فِيهِمَا الِهَةٌ

Had there been therein gods,

means, in the heavens and the earth,

إِلاَّ اللَّهُ

besides Allah,

لَفَسَدَتَا

then verily, both would have been ruined.

This is like the Ayah;

No son did Allah beget, nor is there any god along with Him. Then each god would have taken away what he had created, and some would have tried to overcome others!

Glorified be Allah above all that they attribute to Him! (23;91)

And Allah says here;

فَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَرْشِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

Glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Throne, above all that they associate with Him!

meaning, glorified be He above what they say about Him having offspring or partners;

glorified and exalted and sanctified be He far above all the lies that they fabricate.

لَاا يُسْأَلُ عَمَّا يَفْعَلُ وَهُمْ يُسْأَلُونَ
