Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Anbya Verse 111

Al-Anbya [21]: 111 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَاِنْ اَدْرِيْ لَعَلَّهٗ فِتْنَةٌ لَّكُمْ وَمَتَاعٌ اِلٰى حِيْنٍ (الأنبياء : ٢١)

wa-in
وَإِنْ
And not
adrī
أَدْرِى
I know
laʿallahu
لَعَلَّهُۥ
perhaps it may be
fit'natun
فِتْنَةٌ
a trial
lakum
لَّكُمْ
for you
wamatāʿun
وَمَتَٰعٌ
and an enjoyment
ilā
إِلَىٰ
for
ḥīnin
حِينٍ
a time"

Transliteration:

Wa in adree la'allahoo fitnatul lakum wa mataa'un ilaaheen (QS. al-ʾAnbiyāʾ:111)

English / Sahih Translation:

And I know not; perhaps it is a trial for you and enjoyment for a time." (QS. Al-Anbya, ayah 111)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

And I do not know; perhaps it is a trial for you and an enjoyment for a while.”

I do not know if this ˹delay˺ is possibly a test for you and an enjoyment for a while.”

Tafsir jalalayn

I do not know; perhaps that, which I have notified you of, but whose time is not known, may be a trial, a test, for you, to see how you will act, and an enjoyment for a while, that is, until your terms of life are concluded (this [second] clause [wa-mat`un, `and an enjoyment'] counters the former, which is the object of the optative expressed by [the particle] la`alla, `perhaps'; the second [clause] cannot be an optative).

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

And I know not, perhaps it may be a trial for you, and an enjoyment for a while.

meaning, `I do not know, perhaps it is a trial for you, and an enjoyment for a while.'

Ibn Jarir said;

`perhaps that is being delayed for you as a test for you, and enjoyment for an allotted time.'

This was narrated by `Awn from Ibn Abbas.
