Al-Qur'an Surah Taha Verse 95

Taha [20]: 95 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكَ يٰسَامِرِيُّ (طه : ٢٠)

He said

"Then what
khaṭbuka
خَطْبُكَ
(is) your case
yāsāmiriyyu
يَٰسَٰمِرِىُّ
O Samiri?"

Transliteration:

Qaala famaa khatbuka yaa Saamiriyy (QS. Ṭāʾ Hāʾ:95)

English / Sahih Translation:

[Moses] said, "And what is your case, O Samiri?" (QS. Taha, ayah 95)

He (Mūsā) said, “What then is your case, O Sāmiriyy?”

Moses then asked, “What did you think you were doing, O  Sâmiri?”

Said Moosa, “And what is your explanation, O Samri?”

He said, ‘What is your business, O Samiri?’

(Moses turned to the Samiri and) said: "What is the matter with you, O Samiri, (that you did such a monstrous thing)?"

(Moses now called upon Sâmirî to account for it and) said, `What were you after (by acting as you did) O Sâmirî?´

English Literal

He said: "So what (is) your concern/matter you Samerey/Elsamerey ?"

Said Moosa, "And what is your explanation, O Samri?"

Said he, "O son of my mother! Seize me not by my beard, or my head! Verily, I feared lest you should say, ´You have made a division amongst the children of Israel, and have not waited for my word.´"

[Musa (Moses)] said: "And what is the matter with you. O Samiri? (i.e. why did you do so?)"

He said: O son of my mother, seize me not by my beard, nor by my head. Surely I was afraid lest thou shouldst say: Thou hast caused division among the Children of Israel and not waited for my word.

He said, “What do you have to say, O Samarian?”

He said, `And what have you to say, what was the motive for [doing] what you did, O Samaritan?'

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

How As-Samiri made the Calf

Allah tells,

قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكَ يَا سَامِرِيُّ



(Musa) said;"And what is the matter with you. O Samiri!"

Musa said to As-Samiri, "What caused you to do what you did What presented such an idea to you causing you to do this!"

Muhammad bin Ishaq reported from Ibn Abbas that he said,

"As-Samiri was a man from the people of Bajarma, a people who worshipped cows. He still had the love of cow worshipping in his soul. However, he acted as though he had accepted Islam with the Children of Israel. His name was Musa bin Zafar."

Qatadah said,

"He was from the village of Samarra.
