Al-Qur'an Surah Taha Verse 72
Taha [20]: 72 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer
قَالُوْا لَنْ نُّؤْثِرَكَ عَلٰى مَا جَاۤءَنَا مِنَ الْبَيِّنٰتِ وَالَّذِيْ فَطَرَنَا فَاقْضِ مَآ اَنْتَ قَاضٍۗ اِنَّمَا تَقْضِيْ هٰذِهِ الْحَيٰوةَ الدُّنْيَا ۗ (طه : ٢٠)

- (of) the world
Transliteration:
Qaaloo lan nu'siraka 'alaa maa jaaa'anaa minal baiyinaati wallazee fataranaa faqdi maaa anta qaad; innamaa taqdee haazihil hayaatad dunyaa(QS. Ṭāʾ Hāʾ:72)
English / Sahih Translation:
They said, "Never will we prefer you over what has come to us of clear proofs and [over] He who created us. So decree whatever you are to decree. You can only decree for this worldly life. (QS. Taha, ayah 72)
Mufti Taqi Usmani
They said, “We will never prefer you over the clear signs that have come to us, and over Him who has created us. So, decide whatever you have to decide. You will decide only for this worldly life.

They responded, “By the One Who created us! We will never prefer you over the clear proofs that have come to us. So do whatever you want! Your authority only covers the ˹fleeting˺ life of this world.

The magicians answered: "By Him Who has created us, we shall never prefer you to the Truth after manifest Signs have come to us. So decree whatever you will. Your decree will pertain, at the most, to the present life of the world.

They replied: "We cannot choose you in the face of the clear testimony we have received, and over Him who created us. So do what you are determined to do. All that you would do will only be confined to our life on earth.

They said, “We shall never prefer you above the clear proofs that have come to us from the One Who has created us – therefore carry out what you want to; only in the life of this world will you be able to!”

They (- the sorcerers) said, `We will certainly never prefer you to the clear proofs and signs that have come to us, nor to Him Who originated us. You may decide what you like to decide. You can only decree concerning this present life and put an end to it (this our life).
English Literal
They said: "We will never/not prefer/choose you over what came to us from the evidences, and who created/brought us into being , so order/execute what you are ordering/executing but you (only) destroy/end this the life the present/worldly life."

They said, "We shall never prefer you above the clear proofs that have come to us from the One Who has created us - therefore carry out what you want to; only in the life of this world will you be able to!"

Said he (Pharaoh), "Do you believe in Him before I give you leave? Verily, he is your master who taught you magic! Therefore will I surely cut off your hands and feet on alternate sides, and I will surely crucify you on the trunks of palm trees; and you shall surely know which of us can give the keenest of torment and the more lasting."

They said: "We prefer you not over the clear signs that have come to us, and to Him (Allah) Who created us. So decree whatever you desire to decree, for you can only decree (regarding) this life of the world.

(Pharaoh) said: You believe in him before I give you leave! Surely he is your chief who taught you enchantment. So I shall cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides and I shall crucify you on the trunks of palm-trees, and you shall certainly know which of us can give the severer and the more abiding chastisement.

They said: We do not prefer you to what has come to us of clear arguments and to He Who made us, therefore decide what you are going to decide; you can only decide about this world's life.

They (the magicians) said, "We would never prefer you to the miracles that we have seen or to our Creator. Do what you want. This life is only for a short time.

Their reply was: 'We will not prefer you over the clear signs that have come to us, nor over Him who has created us. So decide upon whatever you decide, you can only decided upon things in this present life.
Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri
They said: "We prefer you not over what have come to us of the clear signs and to Him (Allah) Who created us. So, decree whatever you desire to decree, for you can only' decree (regarding) this life of the world."
Wahiduddin Khan
They said, "Never shall we prefer you to all the evidence of the truth that has come to us. Nor to Him who has brought us into being. So decide whatever you will. Your jurisdiction only covers the life of this world --
Talal Itani
They said, “We will not prefer you to the proofs that have come to us, and Him who created us. So issue whatever judgment you wish to issue. You can only rule in this lowly life.
Tafsir jalalayn
They said, `We will not choose you over what has come to us of clear signs, proving the truthfulness of Moses, and [over] Him Who originated us, created us (wa'lladh fatarana, either an oath, or a supplement to [the preceding] m, `what'). Decree what you will decree, that is, do what you say. What you decree is only [relevant] in the life of this world (al-hayta'l-duny, is in the accusative because the scope [of his decree] is being indicated, in other words `[you can only decree] in it'); yet you will be requited for it in the Hereafter.
Tafseer Ibn Kathir
قَالُوا لَن نُّوْثِرَكَ عَلَى مَا جَاءنَا مِنَ الْبَيِّنَاتِ
They said;"We prefer you not over what have come to us of the clear signs..."
meaning, "We do not chose you over the guidance and conviction that we have received. "
وَالَّذِي فَطَرَنَا
and to Him (Allah) Who created us.
It could be that they were swearing, "By He Who has created us."
It also could be connected in meaning to the clear signs mentioned before it. In this case it would mean,
"We do not prefer you over our Originator and Creator, Who produced us from a beginning that was nothing. He created us from clay (or mud). Therefore, He alone deserves worship and humility and you do not (Fir`awn)!"
فَاقْضِ مَا أَنتَ قَاضٍ
So decree whatever you desire to decree,
"Do whatever you wish and whatever your hands are able to achieve."
إِنَّمَا تَقْضِي هَذِهِ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا
for you can only decree (regarding) this life of the world.
meaning, "You only have power in this world and it is a world that will come to an end. Verily, we are hoping in the eternal abode.
