Al-Qur'an Surah Taha Verse 117

Taha [20]: 117 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

فَقُلْنَا يٰٓاٰدَمُ اِنَّ هٰذَا عَدُوٌّ لَّكَ وَلِزَوْجِكَ فَلَا يُخْرِجَنَّكُمَا مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ فَتَشْقٰى (طه : ٢٠)

faqul'nā
فَقُلْنَا
Then We said
yāādamu
يَٰٓـَٔادَمُ
"O Adam!
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
hādhā
هَٰذَا
this
ʿaduwwun
عَدُوٌّ
(is) an enemy
laka
لَّكَ
to you
walizawjika
وَلِزَوْجِكَ
and to your wife
falā
فَلَا
So not
yukh'rijannakumā
يُخْرِجَنَّكُمَا
(let) him drive you both
mina
مِنَ
from
l-janati
ٱلْجَنَّةِ
Paradise
fatashqā
فَتَشْقَىٰٓ
so (that) you would suffer

Transliteration:

Faqulnaa yaaa Aadamu inna haazaa 'aduwwul laka wa lizawjika falaa yukhrijan nakumaa minal Jannati fatashqaa (QS. Ṭāʾ Hāʾ:117)

English / Sahih Translation:

So We said, "O Adam, indeed this is an enemy to you and to your wife. Then let him not remove you from Paradise so you would suffer. (QS. Taha, ayah 117)

So, We said “’Ādam, this is an enemy to you and to your wife. So let him not expel you from Paradise, lest you should get into trouble.

So We cautioned, “O Adam! This is surely an enemy to you and to your wife. So do not let him drive you both out of Paradise, for you ˹O Adam˺ would then suffer ˹hardship˺.

We said “O Adam, this is an enemy to you and to your wife, so do not let him drive you both out of Paradise, for then you will fall into misery.

We said, ‘O Adam! This is indeed an enemy of yours and your mate’s. So do not let him expel you from paradise, or you will be miserable.

So We said: "O Adam, surely this is an enemy to you and your wife; so let him not drive the two of you out of the Garden, lest you become distressed.

At this We said, `Adam! surely this fellow is an enemy to you and to your wife. Take care that he does not turn you both out of the garden (of earthly bliss) lest you fall into trouble.

English Literal

So We said: "You Adam, that (E) that (is) an enemy for you and to your wife/spouse, so let him not bring you (B) out from the Paradise, so you (will) be miserable/unhappy."

We therefore said, "O Adam, he is your and your wife’s enemy, so may he not get you both out from heaven, so you then fall into hardship."

And when We said to the angels, "Prostrate yourselves before Adam," they prostrated themselves, save Iblis, who refused.

Then We said: "O Adam! Verily, this is an enemy to you and to your wife. So let him not get you both out of Paradise, so that you be distressed in misery.

And when We said to the angels: Be submissive to Adam, they submitted except Iblis; he refused.

We said, "Adam, this (satan) is your enemy and the enemy of your spouse. Let him not expel you and your spouse from Paradise lest you plunge into misery.

'Adam' We said, 'This is you and your wife's enemy. Do not let him expel you from the Garden, so that you (Adam) will be tired.

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

Then We said: "O Adam! Verily, this is an enemy to you and to your wife. So let him not get you both out of Paradise, so that you will be distressed."

Wahiduddin Khan

We said, "Adam, [Satan] is an enemy to you and to your wife. Let him not turn you both out of Paradise and thus make you come to grief.

We said, “O Adam, this is an enemy to you and to your wife. So do not let him make you leave the Garden, for then you will suffer.

Tafsir jalalayn

Then We said, `Adam, indeed this is an enemy of yours and of your wife, Eve (read Haww'). So do not let him cause you both to be expelled from the Garden, so that you then toil, [so that you then] become fatigued by [the toil of] tillage, sowing, harvesting, milling, baking and otherwise -- the statement is restricted to [the mention of] his [Adam's] `toil' because it is the man who has to strive [to provide] for his wife.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

فَقُلْنَا يَا ادَمُ إِنَّ هَذَا عَدُوٌّ لَّكَ وَلِزَوْجِكَ

Then We said;"O Adam! Verily, this is an enemy to you and to your wife..."

here wife refers to Hawwa'.

فَلَ يُخْرِجَنَّكُمَا مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ فَتَشْقَى



So let him not get you both out of Paradise, so that you will be distressed.

meaning, `Do not be hasty in doing something that will get you expelled from Paradise, or else you will be fatigued, discomforted and worried, seeking your sustenance. But here, in Paradise, you live a life of ease with no burdens and no difficulties.'

إِنَّ لَكَ أَلاَّ تَجُوعَ فِيهَا وَلَا تَعْرَى
