Al-Qur'an Surah Taha Verse 115

Taha [20]: 115 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَلَقَدْ عَهِدْنَآ اِلٰٓى اٰدَمَ مِنْ قَبْلُ فَنَسِيَ وَلَمْ نَجِدْ لَهٗ عَزْمًا ࣖ (طه : ٢٠)

walaqad
وَلَقَدْ
And verily
ʿahid'nā
عَهِدْنَآ
We made a covenant

إِلَىٰٓ

Adam

fanasiya
فَنَسِىَ
but he forgot

وَلَمْ

We found

Transliteration:

Wa laqad 'ahidnaaa ilaaa Aadama min qablu fanasiya wa lam najid lahoo 'azmaa (QS. Ṭāʾ Hāʾ:115)

English / Sahih Translation:

And We had already taken a promise from Adam before, but he forgot; and We found not in him determination. (QS. Taha, ayah 115)

We had given a directive to ’Ādam earlier, then he forgot, and We did not find in him a firm resolve.

And We had promised/recommended to Adam from before so he forgot, and We did not find decisiveness/determination for him.

And We made a covenant with Adam, We enjoined him not to eat of the tree, before, that is, before he ate of it, but he forgot, he disregarded Our covenant, and We did not find in him any constancy, any resoluteness or patience in [abiding by] what We forbade him from.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

The Story of Adam and Iblis

Allah tells,

وَلَقَدْ عَهِدْنَا إِلَى ادَمَ مِن قَبْلُ فَنَسِيَ وَلَمْ نَجِدْ لَهُ عَزْمًا



And indeed We made a covenant with Adam before, but he forgot, and We found on his part no firm willpower.

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Ibn Abbas said,

"Verily, man was named Insan only because he was given a covenant, but he forgot it (Nasiya)."

Ali bin Abi Talhah reported the same from Ibn Abbas.

Mujahid and Al-Hasan said that he forgot means,

"He abandoned it."
