Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Baqarah Verse 72

Al-Baqarah [2]: 72 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَاِذْ قَتَلْتُمْ نَفْسًا فَادّٰرَءْتُمْ فِيْهَا ۗ وَاللّٰهُ مُخْرِجٌ مَّا كُنْتُمْ تَكْتُمُوْنَ ۚ (البقرة : ٢)

wa-idh
وَإِذْ
And when
qataltum
قَتَلْتُمْ
you killed
nafsan
نَفْسًا
a man
fa-iddāratum
فَٱدَّٰرَْٰٔتُمْ
then you disputed
fīhā
فِيهَاۖ
concerning it
wal-lahu
وَٱللَّهُ
but Allah
mukh'rijun
مُخْرِجٌ
(is) the One Who brought forth
مَّا
what
kuntum
كُنتُمْ
you were
taktumūna
تَكْتُمُونَ
concealing

Transliteration:

Wa iz qataltum nafsan faddaara'tum feehaa wallaahu mukrijum maa kuntum taktumoon (QS. al-Baq̈arah:72)

English / Sahih Translation:

And [recall] when you slew a man and disputed over it, but Allah was to bring out that which you were concealing. (QS. Al-Baqarah, ayah 72)

And when you killed a man, and started putting the blame for it on one another, while Allah was to bring forth what you were holding back.

You should also recall to mind another incident: You slew a man and began to dispute about the murder and accuse one another of it, but Allah had decreed that what you were trying to hide should be disclosed.

English Literal

And when you (P) killed a self, so you repelled (accusations amongst yourselves) in it, and God (is) bringing out what you were hiding/concealing.

Tafsir jalalayn

And when you killed a living soul, and disputed thereon (iddra'tum; the t' [of the root-form itdra'tum] has been assimilated with the dl) -- and God disclosed what you were hiding (this is a parenthetical statement; the story begins here [with wa-idh qataltum nafsan, `and when you killed a soul'... and continues in the following]);

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Bringing the murdered Man back to Life

Allah tells;

وَإِذْ قَتَلْتُمْ نَفْساً فَادَّارَأْتُمْ فِيهَا وَاللّهُ مُخْرِجٌ مَّا كُنتُمْ تَكْتُمُونَ



And (remember) when you killed a man and disagreed among yourselves as to the crime. But Allah brought forth that which you were Taktumun.

Al-Bukhari said that,
فَادَّارَأْتُمْ فِيهَا
(And disagreed among yourselves as to the crime) means,

"Disputed."

This is also the Tafsir of Mujahid.

Ata' Al-Khurasani and Ad-Dahhak said,

"Disputed about this matter."

Also, Ibn Jurayj said that,
وَإِذْ قَتَلْتُمْ نَفْساً فَادَّارَأْتُمْ فِيهَا
(And (remember) when you killed a man and disagreed among yourselves as to the crime) means,

some of them said, "You killed him," while the others said, "No you killed him."

This is also the Tafsir of Abdur-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam.

Mujahid said that,
وَاللّهُ مُخْرِجٌ مَّا كُنتُمْ تَكْتُمُونَ
(But Allah brought forth that which you were Taktumun) means,

"what you were hiding."

Allah said
