Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Baqarah Verse 51
Al-Baqarah [2]: 51 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer
وَاِذْ وٰعَدْنَا مُوْسٰىٓ اَرْبَعِيْنَ لَيْلَةً ثُمَّ اتَّخَذْتُمُ الْعِجْلَ مِنْۢ بَعْدِهٖ وَاَنْتُمْ ظٰلِمُوْنَ (البقرة : ٢)

- وَإِذْ
- And when
- wāʿadnā
- وَٰعَدْنَا
- We appointed
- mūsā
- مُوسَىٰٓ
- (for) Musa
- arbaʿīna
- أَرْبَعِينَ
- forty
- laylatan
- لَيْلَةً

- ثُمَّ
- Then
- ittakhadhtumu
- ٱتَّخَذْتُمُ
- you took
- l-ʿij'la
- ٱلْعِجْلَ
- the calf
- min
- مِنۢ

- baʿdihi
- بَعْدِهِۦ
- after him
- wa-antum
- وَأَنتُمْ
- and you
- ẓālimūna
- ظَٰلِمُونَ
- (were) wrongdoers
Transliteration:
Wa iz waa'adnaa Moosaaa arba'eena lailatan summattakhaztumul 'ijla mim ba'dihee wa antum zaalimoon(QS. al-Baq̈arah:51)
English / Sahih Translation:
And [recall] when We made an appointment with Moses for forty nights. Then you took [for worship] the calf after him [i.e., his departure], while you were wrongdoers. (QS. Al-Baqarah, ayah 51)

And recall that We appointed for Moses forty nights. Then you took to worshiping the calf after him, and you turned wicked.
Tafsir jalalayn
And when We appointed for (w`adn or wa`adn) Moses forty nights, at the end of which We shall give him the Torah for you to implement, then you took to yourselves the calf, the one which the Samaritan fashioned for you as a god, after him, that is, after he departed for Our appointment, and you were evildoers, for taking it [in worship], because you directed your worship to the wrong place.
Tafseer Ibn Kathir
The Children of Israel worshipped the Calf
Allah then said,
وَإِذْ وَاعَدْنَا مُوسَى أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً ثُمَّ اتَّخَذْتُمُ الْعِجْلَ مِن بَعْدِهِ وَأَنتُمْ ظَالِمُونَ
ثُمَّ عَفَوْنَا عَنكُمِ مِّن بَعْدِ ذَلِكَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
