Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Baqarah Verse 141

Al-Baqarah [2]: 141 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

تِلْكَ اُمَّةٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ ۚ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَلَكُمْ مَّا كَسَبْتُمْ ۚ وَلَا تُسْـَٔلُوْنَ عَمَّا كَانُوْا يَعْمَلُوْنَ ࣖ ۔ (البقرة : ٢)

Transliteration:

Tilka ummatun qad khalat lahaa maa kasabat wa lakum maa kasabtum wa laa tus'aloona 'ammaa kaano ya'maloo (QS. al-Baq̈arah:141)

English / Sahih Translation:

That is a nation which has passed on. It will have [the consequence of] what it earned, and you will have what you have earned. And you will not be asked about what they used to do. (QS. Al-Baqarah, ayah 141)

Those are a people who have passed away. For them is what they earned, and for you is what you earned, and you shall not be questioned about what they have been doing.

That was a community that had already gone before. For them is what they earned and for you is what you have earned. And you will not be accountable for what they have done.

These are community preaching righteousness that have passed away; for them is (the good fruit of) what (good deeds) they performed, while for you is (the reward of) what (good and noble deeds) you perform. And you shall not be called to account for their deeds.

English Literal

That (is) a nation had passed/expired for it what it earned/acquired , and for you what you earned/acquired , and you are not (to) be asked/questioned about what they were making/doing .

Those were a people that have passed away; theirs is what they did and yours what you have done. You shall not be answerable for their deeds.

That was a community that has passed. To them is what they have earned, and to you is what you have earned. And you will not be questioned about what they used to do.

Tafsir jalalayn

That is a community that has passed away; theirs is what they have earned, and yours is what you have earned; you shall not be asked about what they did; a similar [verse] has already been mentioned above.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

تِلْكَ أُمَّةٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ

That was a nation who has passed away.

meaning, existed before you.

لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَلَكُم مَّا كَسَبْتُمْ

They shall receive the reward of what they earned, and you of what you earn.

meaning, they bear their deeds while you bear yours.

وَلَا تُسْأَلُونَ عَمَّا كَانُواْ يَعْمَلُونَ



And you will not be asked of what they used to do.

meaning, the fact that you are their relatives will not suffice, unless you imitate their good deeds.

Further, do not be deceived by the fact that you are their descendants, unless you imitate them in obeying Allah's orders and following His Messengers who were sent as warners and bearers of good news.

Indeed, whoever disbelieves in even one Prophet, will have disbelieved in all the Messengers, especially if one disbelieves in the master and Final Messenger from Allah, the Lord of the worlds, to all mankind and the Jinns. May Allah's peace and blessings be on Muhammad and the rest of Allah's Prophets
