Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Baqarah Verse 100
Al-Baqarah [2]: 100 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer
اَوَكُلَّمَا عٰهَدُوْا عَهْدًا نَّبَذَهٗ فَرِيْقٌ مِّنْهُمْ ۗ بَلْ اَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُوْنَ (البقرة : ٢)

- And is (it not that) whenever

- عَٰهَدُوا۟
- they took

- عَهْدًا
- a covenant
- nabadhahu

Transliteration:
Awa kullamaa 'aahadoo ahdan nabazahoo fareequm minhum; bal aksaruhum laa u'minoon(QS. al-Baq̈arah:100)
English / Sahih Translation:
Is it not [true] that every time they took a covenant a party of them threw it away? But, [in fact], most of them do not believe. (QS. Al-Baqarah, ayah 100)

Tafsir jalalayn
Why, whenever they make a covenant, with God that they will believe in the Prophet (s) when he appears, or that they will not give assistance to the idolaters against the Prophet (s), does a party of them reject it?, cast it away repudiating it (this is the response to the clause beginning with kullam, the interrogative of rebuke). Nay (bal indicates a transition), but most of them are disbelievers.
Tafseer Ibn Kathir
أَوَكُلَّمَا عَاهَدُواْ عَهْداً نَّبَذَهُ فَرِيقٌ مِّنْهُم
Is it not (the case) that every time they make a covenant, some party among them throw it aside.
بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يُوْمِنُونَ
Nay! (the truth is;most of them believe not!
Al-Hasan Al-Basri said that Allah's statement means,
"There is not a promise that they make, but they break it and abandon it. They make a promise today and break it tomorrow."
The Jews abandoned the Book of Allah and practiced Magic
Allah tells,
وَلَمَّا جَاءهُمْ رَسُولٌ مِّنْ عِندِ اللّهِ مُصَدِّقٌ لِّمَا مَعَهُمْ نَبَذَ فَرِيقٌ مِّنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ الْكِتَابَ كِتَابَ اللّهِ وَرَاء ظُهُورِهِمْ كَأَنَّهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
