(The Cow)

11

وَاِذَا قِيْلَ لَهُمْ لَا تُفْسِدُوْا فِى الْاَرْضِۙ قَالُوْٓا اِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُصْلِحُوْنَ ١١

wa-idhā
وَإِذَا
And when
qīla
قِيلَ
it is said
lahum
لَهُمْ
to them
لَا
"(Do) not
tuf'sidū
تُفْسِدُوا۟
spread corruption
فِى
in
l-arḍi
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth"
qālū
قَالُوٓا۟
they say
innamā
إِنَّمَا
"Only
naḥnu
نَحْنُ
we
muṣ'liḥūna
مُصْلِحُونَ
(are) reformers"
And when it is said to them, "Do not cause corruption on the earth," they say, "We are but reformers." (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 11)
Tafsir
12

اَلَآ اِنَّهُمْ هُمُ الْمُفْسِدُوْنَ وَلٰكِنْ لَّا يَشْعُرُوْنَ ١٢

alā
أَلَآ
Beware
innahum
إِنَّهُمْ
indeed they
humu
هُمُ
themselves
l-muf'sidūna
ٱلْمُفْسِدُونَ
(are) the ones who spread corruption
walākin
وَلَٰكِن
[and] but
لَّا
not
yashʿurūna
يَشْعُرُونَ
they realize (it)
Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive [it] not. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 12)
Tafsir
13

وَاِذَا قِيْلَ لَهُمْ اٰمِنُوْا كَمَآ اٰمَنَ النَّاسُ قَالُوْٓا اَنُؤْمِنُ كَمَآ اٰمَنَ السُّفَهَاۤءُ ۗ اَلَآ اِنَّهُمْ هُمُ السُّفَهَاۤءُ وَلٰكِنْ لَّا يَعْلَمُوْنَ ١٣

wa-idhā
وَإِذَا
And when
qīla
قِيلَ
it is said
lahum
لَهُمْ
to them
āminū
ءَامِنُوا۟
"Believe
kamā
كَمَآ
as
āmana
ءَامَنَ
believed
l-nāsu
ٱلنَّاسُ
the people"
qālū
قَالُوٓا۟
they say
anu'minu
أَنُؤْمِنُ
"Should we believe
kamā
كَمَآ
as
āmana
ءَامَنَ
believed
l-sufahāu
ٱلسُّفَهَآءُۗ
the fools?"
alā
أَلَآ
Beware
innahum
إِنَّهُمْ
certainly they
humu
هُمُ
themselves
l-sufahāu
ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ
(are) the fools
walākin
وَلَٰكِن
[and] but
لَّا
not
yaʿlamūna
يَعْلَمُونَ
they know
And when it is said to them, "Believe as the people have believed," they say, "Should we believe as the foolish have believed?" Unquestionably, it is they who are the foolish, but they know [it] not. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 13)
Tafsir
14

وَاِذَا لَقُوا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا قَالُوْٓا اٰمَنَّا ۚ وَاِذَا خَلَوْا اِلٰى شَيٰطِيْنِهِمْ ۙ قَالُوْٓا اِنَّا مَعَكُمْ ۙاِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُسْتَهْزِءُوْنَ ١٤

wa-idhā
وَإِذَا
And when
laqū
لَقُوا۟
they meet
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
āmanū
ءَامَنُوا۟
believe[d]
qālū
قَالُوٓا۟
they say
āmannā
ءَامَنَّا
"We believe[d]"
wa-idhā
وَإِذَا
But when
khalaw
خَلَوْا۟
they are alone
ilā
إِلَىٰ
with
shayāṭīnihim
شَيَٰطِينِهِمْ
their evil ones
qālū
قَالُوٓا۟
they say
innā
إِنَّا
"Indeed, we
maʿakum
مَعَكُمْ
(are) with you
innamā
إِنَّمَا
only
naḥnu
نَحْنُ
we
mus'tahziūna
مُسْتَهْزِءُونَ
(are) mockers"
And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe"; but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say, "Indeed, we are with you; we were only mockers." (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 14)
Tafsir
15

اَللّٰهُ يَسْتَهْزِئُ بِهِمْ وَيَمُدُّهُمْ فِيْ طُغْيَانِهِمْ يَعْمَهُوْنَ ١٥

al-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
yastahzi-u
يَسْتَهْزِئُ
mocks
bihim
بِهِمْ
at them
wayamudduhum
وَيَمُدُّهُمْ
and prolongs them
فِى
in
ṭugh'yānihim
طُغْيَٰنِهِمْ
their transgression
yaʿmahūna
يَعْمَهُونَ
they wander blindly
[But] Allah mocks them and prolongs them in their transgression [while] they wander blindly. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 15)
Tafsir
16

اُولٰۤىِٕكَ الَّذِيْنَ اشْتَرَوُا الضَّلٰلَةَ بِالْهُدٰىۖ فَمَا رَبِحَتْ تِّجَارَتُهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوْا مُهْتَدِيْنَ ١٦

ulāika
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ
Those
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
(are) the ones who
ish'tarawū
ٱشْتَرَوُا۟
bought
l-ḍalālata
ٱلضَّلَٰلَةَ
[the] astraying
bil-hudā
بِٱلْهُدَىٰ
for [the] guidance
famā
فَمَا
So not
rabiḥat
رَبِحَت
profited
tijāratuhum
تِّجَٰرَتُهُمْ
their commerce
wamā
وَمَا
and not
kānū
كَانُوا۟
were they
muh'tadīna
مُهْتَدِينَ
guided-ones
Those are the ones who have purchased error [in exchange] for gui‏dance, so their transaction has brought no profit, nor were they guided. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 16)
Tafsir
17

مَثَلُهُمْ كَمَثَلِ الَّذِى اسْتَوْقَدَ نَارًا ۚ فَلَمَّآ اَضَاۤءَتْ مَا حَوْلَهٗ ذَهَبَ اللّٰهُ بِنُوْرِهِمْ وَتَرَكَهُمْ فِيْ ظُلُمٰتٍ لَّا يُبْصِرُوْنَ ١٧

mathaluhum
مَثَلُهُمْ
Their example
kamathali
كَمَثَلِ
(is) like (the) example
alladhī
ٱلَّذِى
(of) the one who
is'tawqada
ٱسْتَوْقَدَ
kindled
nāran
نَارًا
a fire
falammā
فَلَمَّآ
then, when
aḍāat
أَضَآءَتْ
it lighted
مَا
what
ḥawlahu
حَوْلَهُۥ
his surroundings
dhahaba
ذَهَبَ
took away
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
binūrihim
بِنُورِهِمْ
their light
watarakahum
وَتَرَكَهُمْ
and left them
فِى
in
ẓulumātin
ظُلُمَٰتٍ
darkness[es]
لَّا
(so) not
yub'ṣirūna
يُبْصِرُونَ
(do) they see
Their example is that of one who kindled a fire, but when it illuminated what was around him, Allah took away their light and left them in darkness [so] they could not see. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 17)
Tafsir
18

صُمٌّ ۢ بُكْمٌ عُمْيٌ فَهُمْ لَا يَرْجِعُوْنَۙ ١٨

ṣummun
صُمٌّۢ
Deaf
buk'mun
بُكْمٌ
dumb
ʿum'yun
عُمْىٌ
blind
fahum
فَهُمْ
so they
لَا
not
yarjiʿūna
يَرْجِعُونَ
[they] will not return
Deaf, dumb and blind – so they will not return [to the right path]. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 18)
Tafsir
19

اَوْ كَصَيِّبٍ مِّنَ السَّمَاۤءِ فِيْهِ ظُلُمٰتٌ وَّرَعْدٌ وَّبَرْقٌۚ يَجْعَلُوْنَ اَصَابِعَهُمْ فِيْٓ اٰذَانِهِمْ مِّنَ الصَّوَاعِقِ حَذَرَ الْمَوْتِۗ وَاللّٰهُ مُحِيْطٌۢ بِالْكٰفِرِيْنَ ١٩

aw
أَوْ
Or
kaṣayyibin
كَصَيِّبٍ
like a rainstorm
mina
مِّنَ
from
l-samāi
ٱلسَّمَآءِ
the sky
fīhi
فِيهِ
in it (are)
ẓulumātun
ظُلُمَٰتٌ
darkness[es]
waraʿdun
وَرَعْدٌ
and thunder
wabarqun
وَبَرْقٌ
and lightning
yajʿalūna
يَجْعَلُونَ
They put
aṣābiʿahum
أَصَٰبِعَهُمْ
their fingers
فِىٓ
in
ādhānihim
ءَاذَانِهِم
their ears
mina
مِّنَ
from
l-ṣawāʿiqi
ٱلصَّوَٰعِقِ
the thunderclaps
ḥadhara
حَذَرَ
(in) fear (of)
l-mawti
ٱلْمَوْتِۚ
[the] death
wal-lahu
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
muḥīṭun
مُحِيطٌۢ
(is) [the One Who] encompasses
bil-kāfirīna
بِٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ
the disbelievers
Or [it is] like a rainstorm from the sky within which is darkness, thunder and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps in dread of death. But Allah is encompassing of the disbelievers. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 19)
Tafsir
20

يَكَادُ الْبَرْقُ يَخْطَفُ اَبْصَارَهُمْ ۗ كُلَّمَآ اَضَاۤءَ لَهُمْ مَّشَوْا فِيْهِ ۙ وَاِذَآ اَظْلَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ قَامُوْا ۗوَلَوْ شَاۤءَ اللّٰهُ لَذَهَبَ بِسَمْعِهِمْ وَاَبْصَارِهِمْ ۗ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْرٌ ࣖ ٢٠

yakādu
يَكَادُ
Almost
l-barqu
ٱلْبَرْقُ
the lightning
yakhṭafu
يَخْطَفُ
snatches away
abṣārahum
أَبْصَٰرَهُمْۖ
their sight
kullamā
كُلَّمَآ
Whenever
aḍāa
أَضَآءَ
it flashes
lahum
لَهُم
for them
mashaw
مَّشَوْا۟
they walk
fīhi
فِيهِ
in it
wa-idhā
وَإِذَآ
and when
aẓlama
أَظْلَمَ
it darkens
ʿalayhim
عَلَيْهِمْ
on them
qāmū
قَامُوا۟ۚ
they stand (still)
walaw
وَلَوْ
And if
shāa
شَآءَ
had willed
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
ladhahaba
لَذَهَبَ
He would certainly have taken away
bisamʿihim
بِسَمْعِهِمْ
their hearing
wa-abṣārihim
وَأَبْصَٰرِهِمْۚ
and their sight
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
(is) on
kulli
كُلِّ
every
shayin
شَىْءٍ
thing
qadīrun
قَدِيرٌ
All-Powerful
The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every time it lights [the way] for them, they walk therein; but when darkness comes over them, they stand [still]. And if Allah had willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 20)
