تِلْكَ اُمَّةٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ ۚ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَلَكُمْ مَّا كَسَبْتُمْ ۚ وَلَا تُسْـَٔلُوْنَ عَمَّا كَانُوْا يَعْمَلُوْنَ ࣖ ۔ ١٤١

- it earned

- وَلَكُم
- and for you
- mā
- مَّا

- kasabtum
- كَسَبْتُمْۖ
- you have earned
- walā
- وَلَا
- And not
- tus'alūna
- تُسْـَٔلُونَ
- you will be asked
- ʿammā
- عَمَّا
- about what
- kānū
- كَانُوا۟
- they used to
- yaʿmalūna
- يَعْمَلُونَ
- do
That is a nation which has passed on. It will have [the consequence of] what it earned, and you will have what you have earned. And you will not be asked about what they used to do. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 141)Tafsir
۞ سَيَقُوْلُ السُّفَهَاۤءُ مِنَ النَّاسِ مَا وَلّٰىهُمْ عَنْ قِبْلَتِهِمُ الَّتِيْ كَانُوْا عَلَيْهَا ۗ قُلْ لِّلّٰهِ الْمَشْرِقُ وَالْمَغْرِبُۗ يَهْدِيْ مَنْ يَّشَاۤءُ اِلٰى صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِيْمٍ ١٤٢
- sayaqūlu
- سَيَقُولُ
- Will say
- l-sufahāu
- ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ
- the foolish ones
- mina
- مِنَ
- from
- l-nāsi
- ٱلنَّاسِ
- the people
- mā
- مَا
- "What
- wallāhum
- وَلَّىٰهُمْ
- (has) turned them
- ʿan
- عَن
- from
- qib'latihimu
- قِبْلَتِهِمُ
- their direction of prayer
- allatī
- ٱلَّتِى
- which
- kānū
- كَانُوا۟
- they were used to
- ʿalayhā
- عَلَيْهَاۚ
- [on it]"
- qul
- قُل
- Say
- lillahi
- لِّلَّهِ
- "For Allah
- l-mashriqu
- ٱلْمَشْرِقُ
- (is) the east
- wal-maghribu
- وَٱلْمَغْرِبُۚ
- and the west
- yahdī
- يَهْدِى
- He guides
- man
- مَن
- whom
- yashāu
- يَشَآءُ
- He wills
- ilā
- إِلَىٰ
- to
- ṣirāṭin
- صِرَٰطٍ
- a path
- mus'taqīmin
- مُّسْتَقِيمٍ
- straight"
The foolish among the people will say, "What has turned them away from their qiblah, which they used to face?" Say, "To Allah belongs the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path." (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 142)Tafsir
وَكَذٰلِكَ جَعَلْنٰكُمْ اُمَّةً وَّسَطًا لِّتَكُوْنُوْا شُهَدَاۤءَ عَلَى النَّاسِ وَيَكُوْنَ الرَّسُوْلُ عَلَيْكُمْ شَهِيْدًا ۗ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا الْقِبْلَةَ الَّتِيْ كُنْتَ عَلَيْهَآ اِلَّا لِنَعْلَمَ مَنْ يَّتَّبِعُ الرَّسُوْلَ مِمَّنْ يَّنْقَلِبُ عَلٰى عَقِبَيْهِۗ وَاِنْ كَانَتْ لَكَبِيْرَةً اِلَّا عَلَى الَّذِيْنَ هَدَى اللّٰهُ ۗوَمَا كَانَ اللّٰهُ لِيُضِيْعَ اِيْمَانَكُمْ ۗ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ بِالنَّاسِ لَرَءُوْفٌ رَّحِيْمٌ ١٤٣
- wakadhālika
- وَكَذَٰلِكَ
- And thus
- jaʿalnākum
- جَعَلْنَٰكُمْ
- We made you
- ummatan
- أُمَّةً
- a community
- wasaṭan
- وَسَطًا
- (of the) middle way
- litakūnū
- لِّتَكُونُوا۟
- so that you will be
- shuhadāa
- شُهَدَآءَ
- witnesses
- ʿalā
- عَلَى
- over
- l-nāsi
- ٱلنَّاسِ
- the mankind
- wayakūna
- وَيَكُونَ
- and will be
- l-rasūlu
- ٱلرَّسُولُ
- the Messenger
- ʿalaykum
- عَلَيْكُمْ
- on you
- shahīdan
- شَهِيدًاۗ
- a witness
- wamā
- وَمَا
- And not
- jaʿalnā
- جَعَلْنَا
- We made
- l-qib'lata
- ٱلْقِبْلَةَ
- the direction of prayer
- allatī
- ٱلَّتِى
- which
- kunta
- كُنتَ
- you were used to
- ʿalayhā
- عَلَيْهَآ
- [on it]
- illā
- إِلَّا
- except
- linaʿlama
- لِنَعْلَمَ
- that We make evident
- man
- مَن
- (he) who
- yattabiʿu
- يَتَّبِعُ
- follows
- l-rasūla
- ٱلرَّسُولَ
- the Messenger
- mimman
- مِمَّن
- from (he) who
- yanqalibu
- يَنقَلِبُ
- turns back
- ʿalā
- عَلَىٰ
- on
- ʿaqibayhi
- عَقِبَيْهِۚ
- his heels
- wa-in
- وَإِن
- And indeed
- kānat
- كَانَتْ
- it was
- lakabīratan
- لَكَبِيرَةً
- certainly a great (test)
- illā
- إِلَّا
- except
- ʿalā
- عَلَى
- for
- alladhīna
- ٱلَّذِينَ
- those whom
- hadā
- هَدَى
- guided
- l-lahu
- ٱللَّهُۗ
- (by) Allah
- wamā
- وَمَا
- And not
- kāna
- كَانَ
- will
- l-lahu
- ٱللَّهُ
- Allah
- liyuḍīʿa
- لِيُضِيعَ
- let go waste
- īmānakum
- إِيمَٰنَكُمْۚ
- your faith
- inna
- إِنَّ
- Indeed
- l-laha
- ٱللَّهَ
- Allah
- bil-nāsi
- بِٱلنَّاسِ
- (is) to [the] mankind
- laraūfun
- لَرَءُوفٌ
- Full of Kindness
- raḥīmun
- رَّحِيمٌ
- Most Merciful
And thus We have made you a median [i.e., just] community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you. And We did not make the qiblah which you used to face except that We might make evident who would follow the Messenger from who would turn back on his heels. And indeed, it is difficult except for those whom Allah has guided. And never would Allah have caused you to lose your faith [i.e., your previous prayers]. Indeed Allah is, to the people, Kind and Merciful. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 143)Tafsir
قَدْ نَرٰى تَقَلُّبَ وَجْهِكَ فِى السَّمَاۤءِۚ فَلَنُوَلِّيَنَّكَ قِبْلَةً تَرْضٰىهَا ۖ فَوَلِّ وَجْهَكَ شَطْرَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ ۗ وَحَيْثُ مَا كُنْتُمْ فَوَلُّوْا وُجُوْهَكُمْ شَطْرَهٗ ۗ وَاِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ اُوْتُوا الْكِتٰبَ لَيَعْلَمُوْنَ اَنَّهُ الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَّبِّهِمْ ۗ وَمَا اللّٰهُ بِغَافِلٍ عَمَّا يَعْمَلُوْنَ ١٤٤

- Indeed
- narā
- نَرَىٰ
- We see
- taqalluba
- تَقَلُّبَ
- (the) turning
- wajhika
- وَجْهِكَ
- (of) your face
- fī
- فِى
- towards
- l-samāi
- ٱلسَّمَآءِۖ
- the heaven
- falanuwalliyannaka
- فَلَنُوَلِّيَنَّكَ
- So We will surely turn you
- qib'latan
- قِبْلَةً
- (to the) direction of prayer
- tarḍāhā
- تَرْضَىٰهَاۚ
- you will be pleased with
- fawalli
- فَوَلِّ
- So turn
- wajhaka
- وَجْهَكَ
- your face
- shaṭra
- شَطْرَ
- towards the direction
- l-masjidi
- ٱلْمَسْجِدِ
- (of) Al-Masjid
- l-ḥarāmi
- ٱلْحَرَامِۚ
- Al-Haraam
- waḥaythu
- وَحَيْثُ
- and wherever
- mā
- مَا
- that
- kuntum
- كُنتُمْ
- you are
- fawallū
- فَوَلُّوا۟
- [so] turn
- wujūhakum
- وُجُوهَكُمْ
- your faces
- shaṭrahu
- شَطْرَهُۥۗ
- (in) its direction
- wa-inna
- وَإِنَّ
- And indeed
- alladhīna
- ٱلَّذِينَ
- those who
- ūtū
- أُوتُوا۟
- were given
- l-kitāba
- ٱلْكِتَٰبَ
- the Book
- layaʿlamūna
- لَيَعْلَمُونَ
- surely know
- annahu
- أَنَّهُ
- that it
- l-ḥaqu
- ٱلْحَقُّ
- (is) the truth
- min
- مِن
- from
- rabbihim
- رَّبِّهِمْۗ
- their Lord
- wamā
- وَمَا
- And not
- l-lahu
- ٱللَّهُ
- (is) Allah
- bighāfilin
- بِغَٰفِلٍ
- unaware
- ʿammā
- عَمَّا
- of what
- yaʿmalūna
- يَعْمَلُونَ
- they do
We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muhammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face [i.e., yourself] toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces [i.e., yourselves] toward it [in prayer]. Indeed, those who have been given the Scripture [i.e., the Jews and the Christians] well know that it is the truth from their Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what they do. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 144)Tafsir
وَلَىِٕنْ اَتَيْتَ الَّذِيْنَ اُوْتُوا الْكِتٰبَ بِكُلِّ اٰيَةٍ مَّا تَبِعُوْا قِبْلَتَكَ ۚ وَمَآ اَنْتَ بِتَابِعٍ قِبْلَتَهُمْ ۚ وَمَا بَعْضُهُمْ بِتَابِعٍ قِبْلَةَ بَعْضٍۗ وَلَىِٕنِ اتَّبَعْتَ اَهْوَاۤءَهُمْ مِّنْۢ بَعْدِ مَاجَاۤءَكَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ ۙ اِنَّكَ اِذًا لَّمِنَ الظّٰلِمِيْنَ ۘ ١٤٥
- wala-in
- وَلَئِنْ
- And even if
- atayta
- أَتَيْتَ
- you come
- alladhīna
- ٱلَّذِينَ
- (to) those who
- ūtū
- أُوتُوا۟
- were given
- l-kitāba
- ٱلْكِتَٰبَ
- the Book
- bikulli
- بِكُلِّ
- with all
- āyatin
- ءَايَةٍ
- (the) signs
- mā
- مَّا
- not
- tabiʿū
- تَبِعُوا۟
- they would follow
- qib'lataka
- قِبْلَتَكَۚ
- your direction of prayer
- wamā
- وَمَآ
- and not
- anta
- أَنتَ
- (will) you (be)
- bitābiʿin
- بِتَابِعٍ
- a follower
- qib'latahum
- قِبْلَتَهُمْۚ
- (of) their direction of prayer
- wamā
- وَمَا
- And not
- baʿḍuhum
- بَعْضُهُم
- some of them
- bitābiʿin
- بِتَابِعٍ
- (are) followers
- qib'lata
- قِبْلَةَ
- (of the) direction of prayer
- baʿḍin
- بَعْضٍۚ
- (of each) other
- wala-ini
- وَلَئِنِ
- And if
- ittabaʿta
- ٱتَّبَعْتَ
- you followed
- ahwāahum
- أَهْوَآءَهُم
- their desires
- min
- مِّنۢ
- from
- baʿdi
- بَعْدِ
- after
- mā
- مَا
- [what]
- jāaka
- جَآءَكَ
- came to you
- mina
- مِنَ
- of
- l-ʿil'mi
- ٱلْعِلْمِۙ
- the knowledge
- innaka
- إِنَّكَ
- indeed, you
- idhan
- إِذًا
- (would) then
- lamina
- لَّمِنَ
- (be) surely among
- l-ẓālimīna
- ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ
- the wrongdoers
And if you brought to those who were given the Scripture every sign, they would not follow your qiblah. Nor will you be a follower of their qiblah. Nor would they be followers of one another's qiblah. So if you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, indeed, you would then be among the wrongdoers. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 145)Tafsir
اَلَّذِيْنَ اٰتَيْنٰهُمُ الْكِتٰبَ يَعْرِفُوْنَهٗ كَمَا يَعْرِفُوْنَ اَبْنَاۤءَهُمْ ۗ وَاِنَّ فَرِيْقًا مِّنْهُمْ لَيَكْتُمُوْنَ الْحَقَّ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُوْنَ ١٤٦
- alladhīna
- ٱلَّذِينَ
- (To) those whom
- ātaynāhumu
- ءَاتَيْنَٰهُمُ
- We gave [them]
- l-kitāba
- ٱلْكِتَٰبَ
- the Book
- yaʿrifūnahu
- يَعْرِفُونَهُۥ
- they recognize it
- kamā
- كَمَا
- like
- yaʿrifūna
- يَعْرِفُونَ
- they recognize
- abnāahum
- أَبْنَآءَهُمْۖ
- their sons
- wa-inna
- وَإِنَّ
- And indeed
- farīqan
- فَرِيقًا
- a group
- min'hum
- مِّنْهُمْ
- of them
- layaktumūna
- لَيَكْتُمُونَ
- surely they conceal
- l-ḥaqa
- ٱلْحَقَّ
- the Truth
- wahum
- وَهُمْ
- while they
- yaʿlamūna
- يَعْلَمُونَ
- know
Those to whom We gave the Scripture know him [i.e., Prophet Muhammad (^)] as they know their own sons. But indeed, a party of them conceal the truth while they know [it]. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 146)Tafsir
اَلْحَقُّ مِنْ رَّبِّكَ فَلَا تَكُوْنَنَّ مِنَ الْمُمْتَرِيْنَ ࣖ ١٤٧
- al-ḥaqu
- ٱلْحَقُّ
- The Truth
- min
- مِن
- (is) from
- rabbika
- رَّبِّكَۖ
- your Lord
- falā
- فَلَا
- so (do) not
- takūnanna
- تَكُونَنَّ
- be
- mina
- مِنَ
- among
- l-mum'tarīna
- ٱلْمُمْتَرِينَ
- the doubters
The truth is from your Lord, so never be among the doubters. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 147)Tafsir
وَلِكُلٍّ وِّجْهَةٌ هُوَ مُوَلِّيْهَا فَاسْتَبِقُوا الْخَيْرٰتِۗ اَيْنَ مَا تَكُوْنُوْا يَأْتِ بِكُمُ اللّٰهُ جَمِيْعًا ۗ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْرٌ ١٤٨
- walikullin
- وَلِكُلٍّ
- And for everyone
- wij'hatun
- وِجْهَةٌ
- (is) a direction
- huwa
- هُوَ
- he
- muwallīhā
- مُوَلِّيهَاۖ
- turns towards it
- fa-is'tabiqū
- فَٱسْتَبِقُوا۟
- so race
- l-khayrāti
- ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِۚ
- (to) the good
- ayna
- أَيْنَ
- Wherever
- mā
- مَا
- that
- takūnū
- تَكُونُوا۟
- you will be
- yati
- يَأْتِ
- will bring
- bikumu
- بِكُمُ
- you
- l-lahu
- ٱللَّهُ
- (by) Allah
- jamīʿan
- جَمِيعًاۚ
- together
- inna
- إِنَّ
- Indeed
- l-laha
- ٱللَّهَ
- Allah
- ʿalā
- عَلَىٰ
- (is) on
- kulli
- كُلِّ
- every
- shayin
- شَىْءٍ
- thing
- qadīrun
- قَدِيرٌ
- All-Powerful
For each [religious following] is a [prayer] direction toward which it faces. So race to [all that is] good. Wherever you may be, Allah will bring you forth [for judgement] all together. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 148)Tafsir
وَمِنْ حَيْثُ خَرَجْتَ فَوَلِّ وَجْهَكَ شَطْرَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ ۗ وَاِنَّهٗ لَلْحَقُّ مِنْ رَّبِّكَ ۗ وَمَا اللّٰهُ بِغَافِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُوْنَ ١٤٩
- wamin
- وَمِنْ
- And from
- ḥaythu
- حَيْثُ
- wherever
- kharajta
- خَرَجْتَ
- you start forth
- fawalli
- فَوَلِّ
- [so] turn
- wajhaka
- وَجْهَكَ
- your face
- shaṭra
- شَطْرَ
- (in the) direction
- l-masjidi
- ٱلْمَسْجِدِ
- (of) Al-Masjid
- l-ḥarāmi
- ٱلْحَرَامِۖ
- Al-Haraam
- wa-innahu
- وَإِنَّهُۥ
- And indeed, it
- lalḥaqqu
- لَلْحَقُّ
- (is) surely the truth
- min
- مِن
- from
- rabbika
- رَّبِّكَۗ
- your Lord
- wamā
- وَمَا
- And not
- l-lahu
- ٱللَّهُ
- (is) Allah
- bighāfilin
- بِغَٰفِلٍ
- unaware
- ʿammā
- عَمَّا
- of what
- taʿmalūna
- تَعْمَلُونَ
- you do
So from wherever you go out [for prayer, O Muhammad], turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram, and indeed, it is the truth from your Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what you do. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 149)Tafsir
وَمِنْ حَيْثُ خَرَجْتَ فَوَلِّ وَجْهَكَ شَطْرَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ ۗ وَحَيْثُ مَا كُنْتُمْ فَوَلُّوْا وُجُوْهَكُمْ شَطْرَهٗ ۙ لِئَلَّا يَكُوْنَ لِلنَّاسِ عَلَيْكُمْ حُجَّةٌ اِلَّا الَّذِيْنَ ظَلَمُوْا مِنْهُمْ فَلَا تَخْشَوْهُمْ وَاخْشَوْنِيْ وَلِاُتِمَّ نِعْمَتِيْ عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَهْتَدُوْنَۙ ١٥٠
- wamin
- وَمِنْ
- And from
- ḥaythu
- حَيْثُ
- wherever
- kharajta
- خَرَجْتَ
- you start forth

- فَوَلِّ
- [so] turn
- wajhaka
- وَجْهَكَ
- your face
- shaṭra
- شَطْرَ
- (in the) direction

- Al-Haraam

- And wherever

- you (all) are

- فَوَلُّوا۟
- [so] turn

- وُجُوهَكُمْ
- your faces
- shaṭrahu
- شَطْرَهُۥ
- (in) its direction
- li-allā
- لِئَلَّا
- so that not
- yakūna
- يَكُونَ
- will be
- lilnnāsi
- لِلنَّاسِ
- for the people
- ʿalaykum
- عَلَيْكُمْ
- against you
- ḥujjatun
- حُجَّةٌ
- any argument
- illā
- إِلَّا
- except
- alladhīna
- ٱلَّذِينَ
- those who
- ẓalamū
- ظَلَمُوا۟
- wronged
- min'hum
- مِنْهُمْ
- among them
- falā
- فَلَا
- so (do) not
- takhshawhum
- تَخْشَوْهُمْ
- fear them
- wa-ikh'shawnī
- وَٱخْشَوْنِى
- but fear Me
- wali-utimma
- وَلِأُتِمَّ
- And that I complete
- niʿ'matī
- نِعْمَتِى
- My favor
- ʿalaykum
- عَلَيْكُمْ
- upon you
- walaʿallakum
- وَلَعَلَّكُمْ
- [and] so that you may
- tahtadūna
- تَهْتَدُونَ
- (be) guided
And from wherever you go out [for prayer], turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And wherever you [believers] may be, turn your faces toward it in order that the people will not have any argument against you, except for those of them who commit wrong; so fear them not but fear Me. And [it is] so I may complete My favor upon you and that you may be guided, (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 150)Tafsir
