(The Cow)

131

اِذْ قَالَ لَهٗ رَبُّهٗٓ اَسْلِمْۙ قَالَ اَسْلَمْتُ لِرَبِّ الْعٰلَمِيْنَ ١٣١

When

قَالَ

lahu
لَهُۥ
to him
rabbuhu
رَبُّهُۥٓ
his Lord
aslim
أَسْلِمْۖ
"Submit (yourself)"
qāla
قَالَ
he said
aslamtu
أَسْلَمْتُ
"I (have) submitted (myself)
lirabbi
لِرَبِّ
to (the) Lord
l-ʿālamīna
ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ
(of) the worlds"
When his Lord said to him, "Submit," he said, "I have submitted [in IsLam] to the Lord of the worlds." (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 131)
Tafsir
132

وَوَصّٰى بِهَآ اِبْرٰهٖمُ بَنِيْهِ وَيَعْقُوْبُۗ يٰبَنِيَّ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ اصْطَفٰى لَكُمُ الدِّيْنَ فَلَا تَمُوْتُنَّ اِلَّا وَاَنْتُمْ مُّسْلِمُوْنَ ۗ ١٣٢

wawaṣṣā
وَوَصَّىٰ
And enjoined
bihā
بِهَآ
[it]
ib'rāhīmu
إِبْرَٰهِۦمُ
Ibrahim
banīhi
بَنِيهِ
(upon) his sons
wayaʿqūbu
وَيَعْقُوبُ
and Yaqub
yābaniyya
يَٰبَنِىَّ
"O my sons!
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
iṣ'ṭafā
ٱصْطَفَىٰ
has chosen
lakumu
لَكُمُ
for you
l-dīna
ٱلدِّينَ
the religion
falā
فَلَا
so not
tamūtunna
تَمُوتُنَّ
(should) you die
illā
إِلَّا
except
wa-antum
وَأَنتُم
while you
mus'limūna
مُّسْلِمُونَ
(are) submissive"
And Abraham instructed his sons [to do the same] and [so did] Jacob, [saying], "O my sons, indeed Allah has chosen for you this religion, so do not die except while you are Muslims." (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 132)
Tafsir
133

اَمْ كُنْتُمْ شُهَدَاۤءَ اِذْ حَضَرَ يَعْقُوْبَ الْمَوْتُۙ اِذْ قَالَ لِبَنِيْهِ مَا تَعْبُدُوْنَ مِنْۢ بَعْدِيْۗ قَالُوْا نَعْبُدُ اِلٰهَكَ وَاِلٰهَ اٰبَاۤىِٕكَ اِبْرٰهٖمَ وَاِسْمٰعِيْلَ وَاِسْحٰقَ اِلٰهًا وَّاحِدًاۚ وَنَحْنُ لَهٗ مُسْلِمُوْنَ ١٣٣

am
أَمْ
Or
kuntum
كُنتُمْ
were you
shuhadāa
شُهَدَآءَ
witnesses
idh
إِذْ
when
ḥaḍara
حَضَرَ
came to
yaʿqūba
يَعْقُوبَ
Yaqub
l-mawtu
ٱلْمَوْتُ
[the] death
idh
إِذْ
when
qāla
قَالَ
he said
libanīhi
لِبَنِيهِ
to his sons
مَا
"What
taʿbudūna
تَعْبُدُونَ
will you worship
min
مِنۢ
from
baʿdī
بَعْدِى
after me?"
qālū
قَالُوا۟
They said
naʿbudu
نَعْبُدُ
"We will worship
ilāhaka
إِلَٰهَكَ
your God
wa-ilāha
وَإِلَٰهَ
and (the) God
ābāika
ءَابَآئِكَ
(of) your forefathers
ib'rāhīma
إِبْرَٰهِۦمَ
Ibrahim
wa-is'māʿīla
وَإِسْمَٰعِيلَ
and Ismail
wa-is'ḥāqa
وَإِسْحَٰقَ
and Ishaq
ilāhan
إِلَٰهًا
God
wāḥidan
وَٰحِدًا
One
wanaḥnu
وَنَحْنُ
And we
lahu
لَهُۥ
to Him
mus'limūna
مُسْلِمُونَ
(are) submissive"
Or were you witnesses when death approached Jacob, when he said to his sons, "What will you worship after me?" They said, "We will worship your God and the God of your fathers, Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac – one God. And we are Muslims [in submission] to Him." (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 133)
Tafsir
134

تِلْكَ اُمَّةٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ ۚ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَلَكُمْ مَّا كَسَبْتُمْ ۚ وَلَا تُسْـَٔلُوْنَ عَمَّا كَانُوْا يَعْمَلُوْنَ ١٣٤

تِلْكَ
This
ummatun
أُمَّةٌ
(was) a community
qad
قَدْ
(which)
khalat
خَلَتْۖ
has passed away
lahā
لَهَا
for it
مَا
what
kasabat
كَسَبَتْ
it earned
walakum
وَلَكُم
and for you
مَّا
what
kasabtum
كَسَبْتُمْۖ
you earned
walā
وَلَا
And not
tus'alūna
تُسْـَٔلُونَ
you will be asked
ʿammā
عَمَّا
about what
kānū
كَانُوا۟
they used to
yaʿmalūna
يَعْمَلُونَ
do
That was a nation which has passed on. It will have [the consequence of] what it earned, and you will have what you have earned. And you will not be asked about what they used to do. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 134)
Tafsir
135

وَقَالُوْا كُوْنُوْا هُوْدًا اَوْ نَصٰرٰى تَهْتَدُوْا ۗ قُلْ بَلْ مِلَّةَ اِبْرٰهٖمَ حَنِيْفًا ۗوَمَا كَانَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِيْنَ ١٣٥

وَقَالُوا۟
And they said

كُونُوا۟
"Be
hūdan
هُودًا
Jews
aw
أَوْ
or
naṣārā
نَصَٰرَىٰ
Christians
tahtadū
تَهْتَدُوا۟ۗ
(then) you will be guided"
qul
قُلْ
Say
bal
بَلْ
"Nay
millata
مِلَّةَ
(the) religion
ib'rāhīma
إِبْرَٰهِۦمَ
(of) Ibrahim
ḥanīfan
حَنِيفًاۖ
(the) upright;
wamā
وَمَا
and not
kāna
كَانَ
he was
mina
مِنَ
of
l-mush'rikīna
ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ
those who associated partners (with Allah)"
They say, "Be Jews or Christians [so] you will be guided." Say, "Rather, [we follow] the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth, and he was not of the polytheists." (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 135)
Tafsir
136

قُوْلُوْٓا اٰمَنَّا بِاللّٰهِ وَمَآ اُنْزِلَ اِلَيْنَا وَمَآ اُنْزِلَ اِلٰٓى اِبْرٰهٖمَ وَاِسْمٰعِيْلَ وَاِسْحٰقَ وَيَعْقُوْبَ وَالْاَسْبَاطِ وَمَآ اُوْتِيَ مُوْسٰى وَعِيْسٰى وَمَآ اُوْتِيَ النَّبِيُّوْنَ مِنْ رَّبِّهِمْۚ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ اَحَدٍ مِّنْهُمْۖ وَنَحْنُ لَهٗ مُسْلِمُوْنَ ١٣٦

قُولُوٓا۟
Say
āmannā
ءَامَنَّا
"We have believed
bil-lahi
بِٱللَّهِ
in Allah
wamā
وَمَآ
and what
unzila
أُنزِلَ
(is) revealed
ilaynā
إِلَيْنَا
to us
wamā
وَمَآ
and what
unzila
أُنزِلَ
was revealed
ilā
إِلَىٰٓ
to
ib'rāhīma
إِبْرَٰهِۦمَ
Ibrahim
wa-is'māʿīla
وَإِسْمَٰعِيلَ
and Ismail
wa-is'ḥāqa
وَإِسْحَٰقَ
and Ishaq
wayaʿqūba
وَيَعْقُوبَ
and Yaqub
wal-asbāṭi
وَٱلْأَسْبَاطِ
and the descendants
wamā
وَمَآ
and what
ūtiya
أُوتِىَ
was given
mūsā
مُوسَىٰ
(to) Musa
waʿīsā
وَعِيسَىٰ
and Isa
wamā
وَمَآ
and what
ūtiya
أُوتِىَ
was given
l-nabiyūna
ٱلنَّبِيُّونَ
(to) the Prophets
min
مِن
from
rabbihim
رَّبِّهِمْ
their Lord
لَا
Not
nufarriqu
نُفَرِّقُ
we make distinction
bayna
بَيْنَ
between
aḥadin
أَحَدٍ
any
min'hum
مِّنْهُمْ
of them
wanaḥnu
وَنَحْنُ
And we
lahu
لَهُۥ
to Him
mus'limūna
مُسْلِمُونَ
(are) submissive"
Say, [O believers], "We have believed in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants [al-Asbat] and what was given to Moses and Jesus and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him." (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 136)
Tafsir
137

فَاِنْ اٰمَنُوْا بِمِثْلِ مَآ اٰمَنْتُمْ بِهٖ فَقَدِ اهْتَدَوْا ۚوَاِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَاِنَّمَا هُمْ فِيْ شِقَاقٍۚ فَسَيَكْفِيْكَهُمُ اللّٰهُ ۚوَهُوَ السَّمِيْعُ الْعَلِيْمُ ۗ ١٣٧

fa-in
فَإِنْ
So if
āmanū
ءَامَنُوا۟
they believe[d]
bimith'li
بِمِثْلِ
in (the) like
مَآ
(of) what
āmantum
ءَامَنتُم
you have believed
bihi
بِهِۦ
in [it]
faqadi
فَقَدِ
then indeed
ih'tadaw
ٱهْتَدَوا۟ۖ
they are (rightly) guided
wa-in
وَّإِن
But if
tawallaw
تَوَلَّوْا۟
they turn away
fa-innamā
فَإِنَّمَا
then only
hum
هُمْ
they
فِى
(are) in
shiqāqin
شِقَاقٍۖ
dissension
fasayakfīkahumu
فَسَيَكْفِيكَهُمُ
So will suffice you against them
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُۚ
Allah
wahuwa
وَهُوَ
and He
l-samīʿu
ٱلسَّمِيعُ
(is) the All-Hearing
l-ʿalīmu
ٱلْعَلِيمُ
the All-Knowing
So if they believe in the same as you believe in, then they have been [rightly] guided; but if they turn away, they are only in dissension, and Allah will be sufficient for you against them. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 137)
Tafsir
138

صِبْغَةَ اللّٰهِ ۚ وَمَنْ اَحْسَنُ مِنَ اللّٰهِ صِبْغَةً ۖ وَّنَحْنُ لَهٗ عٰبِدُوْنَ ١٣٨

ṣib'ghata
صِبْغَةَ
(The) color (religion)
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِۖ
(of) Allah!
waman
وَمَنْ
And who
aḥsanu
أَحْسَنُ
(is) better
mina
مِنَ
than
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
ṣib'ghatan
صِبْغَةًۖ
at coloring?
wanaḥnu
وَنَحْنُ
And we
lahu
لَهُۥ
to Him
ʿābidūna
عَٰبِدُونَ
(are) worshippers
[And say, "Ours is] the religion of Allah. And who is better than Allah in [ordaining] religion? And we are worshippers of Him." (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 138)
Tafsir
139

قُلْ اَتُحَاۤجُّوْنَنَا فِى اللّٰهِ وَهُوَ رَبُّنَا وَرَبُّكُمْۚ وَلَنَآ اَعْمَالُنَا وَلَكُمْ اَعْمَالُكُمْۚ وَنَحْنُ لَهٗ مُخْلِصُوْنَ ۙ ١٣٩

qul
قُلْ
Say
atuḥājjūnanā
أَتُحَآجُّونَنَا
"Do you argue with us
فِى
about
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
wahuwa
وَهُوَ
while He
rabbunā
رَبُّنَا
(is) our Lord
warabbukum
وَرَبُّكُمْ
and your Lord?
walanā
وَلَنَآ
And for us
aʿmālunā
أَعْمَٰلُنَا
(are) our deeds
walakum
وَلَكُمْ
and for you
aʿmālukum
أَعْمَٰلُكُمْ
(are) your deeds
wanaḥnu
وَنَحْنُ
and we
lahu
لَهُۥ
to Him
mukh'liṣūna
مُخْلِصُونَ
(are) sincere
Say, [O Muhammad], "Do you argue with us about Allah while He is our Lord and your Lord? For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. And we are sincere [in deed and intention] to Him." (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 139)
Tafsir
140

اَمْ تَقُوْلُوْنَ اِنَّ اِبْرٰهٖمَ وَاِسْمٰعِيْلَ وَاِسْحٰقَ وَيَعْقُوْبَ وَالْاَسْبَاطَ كَانُوْا هُوْدًا اَوْ نَصٰرٰى ۗ قُلْ ءَاَنْتُمْ اَعْلَمُ اَمِ اللّٰهُ ۗ وَمَنْ اَظْلَمُ مِمَّنْ كَتَمَ شَهَادَةً عِنْدَهٗ مِنَ اللّٰهِ ۗ وَمَا اللّٰهُ بِغَافِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُوْنَ ١٤٠

am
أَمْ
Or
taqūlūna
تَقُولُونَ
(do) you say
inna
إِنَّ
that
ib'rāhīma
إِبْرَٰهِۦمَ
Ibrahim
wa-is'māʿīla
وَإِسْمَٰعِيلَ
and Ismail
wa-is'ḥāqa
وَإِسْحَٰقَ
and Ishaq
wayaʿqūba
وَيَعْقُوبَ
and Yaqub
wal-asbāṭa
وَٱلْأَسْبَاطَ
and the descendants
kānū
كَانُوا۟
were
hūdan
هُودًا
Jews
aw
أَوْ
or
naṣārā
نَصَٰرَىٰۗ
Christians?"
qul
قُلْ
Say
a-antum
ءَأَنتُمْ
"Are you
aʿlamu
أَعْلَمُ
better knowing
ami
أَمِ
or
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُۗ
(is) Allah?"
waman
وَمَنْ
And who
aẓlamu
أَظْلَمُ
(is) more unjust
mimman
مِمَّن
than (the one) who
katama
كَتَمَ
concealed
shahādatan
شَهَٰدَةً
a testimony
ʿindahu
عِندَهُۥ
(that) he has
mina
مِنَ
from
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِۗ
Allah?
wamā
وَمَا
And not
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
(is) Allah
bighāfilin
بِغَٰفِلٍ
unaware
ʿammā
عَمَّا
of what
taʿmalūna
تَعْمَلُونَ
you do
Or do you say that Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants were Jews or Christians? Say, "Are you more knowing or is Allah?" And who is more unjust than one who conceals a testimony he has from Allah? And Allah is not unaware of what you do. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 140)
