Al-Qur'an Surah Maryam Verse 88
Maryam [19]: 88 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer
وَقَالُوا اتَّخَذَ الرَّحْمٰنُ وَلَدًا ۗ (مريم : ١٩)
- waqālū
- وَقَالُوا۟
- And they say
- ittakhadha
- ٱتَّخَذَ
- "Has taken
- l-raḥmānu
- ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ
- the Most Gracious
- waladan
- وَلَدًا
- a son"
Transliteration:
Wa qaalut takhazar Rahmaanu waladaa(QS. Maryam:88)
English / Sahih Translation:
And they say, "The Most Merciful has taken [for Himself] a son." (QS. Maryam, ayah 88)

They say, “The All-Merciful (Allah) has got a son.”

And they say, that is, the Jews and the Christians and those who claim that the angels are God's daughters, `The Compassionate One has taken a son'. [But] God, exalted be He, says to them;
Tafseer Ibn Kathir
The Stern Rejection of attributing a Son to Allah
After Allah affirms in this noble Surah that `Isa was a worshipper and servant of Allah and He mentioned his birth from Maryam without a father, He then begins refuting those who claim that He has a son. Holy is He and far Exalted is He above such description.
Allah says,
وَقَالُوا اتَّخَذَ الرَّحْمَنُ وَلَدًا
