Al-Qur'an Surah Maryam Verse 5
Maryam [19]: 5 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer
وَاِنِّيْ خِفْتُ الْمَوَالِيَ مِنْ وَّرَاۤءِيْ وَكَانَتِ امْرَاَتِيْ عَاقِرًا فَهَبْ لِيْ مِنْ لَّدُنْكَ وَلِيًّا ۙ (مريم : ١٩)
- wa-innī
- وَإِنِّى
- And indeed, I
- khif'tu
- خِفْتُ
- [I] fear
- l-mawāliya
- ٱلْمَوَٰلِىَ
- the successors
- min
- مِن
- after me
- warāī
- وَرَآءِى
- after me
- wakānati
- وَكَانَتِ
- and is
- im'ra-atī
- ٱمْرَأَتِى
- my wife
- ʿāqiran
- عَاقِرًا
- barren
- fahab
- فَهَبْ
- So give
- lī
- لِى
- [to] me
- min
- مِن
- from
- ladunka
- لَّدُنكَ
- Yourself
- waliyyan
- وَلِيًّا
- an heir
Transliteration:
Wa innee khiftul mawaa liya minw waraaa'ee wa kaana tim ra atee 'aairan fahab lee mil ladunka waliyyaa(QS. Maryam:5)
English / Sahih Translation:
And indeed, I fear the successors after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir (QS. Maryam, ayah 5)

And truly I fear my kinsfolk, namely, those who will succeed me [as closest after me] in kinship, such as [my] paternal cousins, after me, that is, after my death, [I fear] for the religion, lest they forsake it, as You have witnessed in the case of the Children of Israel, in the way that they changed [their] religion, and my wife is barren, she does not conceive. So grant me from Yourself a successor, a son,
Tafseer Ibn Kathir
وَإِنِّي خِفْتُ الْمَوَالِيَ مِن وَرَايِي
And verily, I fear Mawali after me,
Mujahid, Qatadah and As-Suddi, all said,
"In saying the word Mawali, he (Zakariyya) meant his succeeding relatives."
وَكَانَتِ امْرَأَتِي عَاقِرًا
فَهَبْ لِي مِن لَّدُنكَ وَلِيًّا
