اِذْ قَالَ لِاَبِيْهِ يٰٓاَبَتِ لِمَ تَعْبُدُ مَا لَا يَسْمَعُ وَلَا يُبْصِرُ وَلَا يُغْنِيْ عَنْكَ شَيْـًٔا (مريم : ١٩)

Transliteration:

Iz qaala li abeehi yaaa abati lima ta'budu maa laa yasma'u wa laa yubsiru wa laa yughnee 'anka shai'aa (QS. Maryam:42)

English / Sahih Translation:

[Mention] when he said to his father, "O my father, why do you worship that which does not hear and does not see and will not benefit you at all? (QS. Maryam, ayah 42)

when he said to his father, “My dear father, why do you worship something that does neither hear nor see, nor help you in any way?

Tafsir jalalayn

When he said to his father, zar, `O my father! (the [final] t' here [of abati] has replaced the [possessive] y' of [genitive] annexation [sc. of y ab]; the two, however, are never used together) -- he [Abraham's father] used to worship idols. Why do you worship that which neither hears nor sees, and is of no avail to you, suffices you [not], in any way? whether in [terms of] benefit or harm.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

إِذْ قَالَ لاَِبِيهِ

When he (Ibrahim ) said to his father;

يَا أَبَتِ لِمَ تَعْبُدُ مَا لَاا يَسْمَعُ وَلَاا يُبْصِرُ وَلَاا يُغْنِي عَنكَ شَيْيًا



O my father! Why do you worship that which hears not, sees not and cannot avail you in anything!

Meaning that these idols will not benefit you, nor can they protect you from any harm
