Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Kahf Verse 70

Al-Kahf [18]: 70 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قَالَ فَاِنِ اتَّبَعْتَنِيْ فَلَا تَسْـَٔلْنِيْ عَنْ شَيْءٍ حَتّٰٓى اُحْدِثَ لَكَ مِنْهُ ذِكْرًا ࣖ (الكهف : ١٨)

Transliteration:

Qaala fa init taba'tanee falaa tas'alnee 'an shai'in hattaaa uhdisa laka minhu zikraa (QS. al-Kahf:70)

English / Sahih Translation:

He said, "Then if you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I make to you about it mention [i.e., explanation]." (QS. Al-Kahf, ayah 70)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

He said, “Well, if you follow me, do not ask me about anything unless I myself start telling you about it.”

He responded, “Then if you follow me, do not question me about anything until I ˹myself˺ clarify it for you.”

(Al-Khadr) explained: "Well, if you go with me, do not ask me concerning anything (that I may do) until I myself make mention of it to you."

He (- the great man) said, `Well, if you would follow me, (mind that) you shall ask me no question about anything unless I myself broach the subject to you.´

English Literal

He Said: "So if you followed me, so do not ask/question me on (about) a thing, until I initiate/tell to you from it a reminder/remembrance."

He said, "Therefore if you stay with me, do not ask me about anything until I myself mention it to you."

He said, “If you follow me, do not ask me about anything, until I myself make mention of it to you.”

Tafsir jalalayn

He said, `If you follow me then do not question me (l tas'aln, a variant reading has l tas'alann) concerning anything, that you might find objectionable in what I do, according to your [limited] knowledge, and be patient, until I [myself] make mention of it to you', in other words, [until] I mention it to you with [an explication of] the reason for it. Moses accepted his precondition bearing in mind the respect which a student should exercise in the presence of a teacher.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

قَالَ فَإِنِ اتَّبَعْتَنِي فَلَا تَسْأَلْنِي عَن شَيْءٍ

Then, if you follow me, ask me not about anything,

do not initiate any discussion of the matter,

حَتَّى أُحْدِثَ لَكَ مِنْهُ ذِكْرًا



till I myself mention of it to you.

meaning, `until I initiate the discussion, before you ask me about it.
