Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Kahf Verse 63
Al-Kahf [18]: 63 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer
قَالَ اَرَاَيْتَ اِذْ اَوَيْنَآ اِلَى الصَّخْرَةِ فَاِنِّيْ نَسِيْتُ الْحُوْتَۖ وَمَآ اَنْسٰىنِيْهُ اِلَّا الشَّيْطٰنُ اَنْ اَذْكُرَهٗۚ وَاتَّخَذَ سَبِيْلَهٗ فِى الْبَحْرِ عَجَبًا (الكهف : ١٨)

- "Did you see

- فَإِنِّى
- Then indeed I

- the fish
- wamā
- وَمَآ
- And not
- ansānīhu
- أَنسَىٰنِيهُ
- made me forget it

- إِلَّا
- except
- l-shayṭānu
- ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ
- the Shaitaan
- an
- أَنْ
- that
- adhkurahu
- أَذْكُرَهُۥۚ
- I mention it
- wa-ittakhadha
- وَٱتَّخَذَ
- And it took
- sabīlahu
- سَبِيلَهُۥ
- its way
- fī
- فِى
- into
- l-baḥri
- ٱلْبَحْرِ
- the sea
- ʿajaban
- عَجَبًا
- amazingly"
Transliteration:
Qaala ara'ayta iz awainaaa ilas sakhrati fa innee naseetul hoota wa maaa ansaaneehu illash Shaitaanu an azkurah; wattakhaza sabeelahoo fil bahri'ajabaa(QS. al-Kahf:63)
English / Sahih Translation:
He said, "Did you see when we retired to the rock? Indeed, I forgot [there] the fish. And none made me forget it except Satan – that I should mention it. And it took its course into the sea amazingly." (QS. Al-Kahf, ayah 63)
Mufti Taqi Usmani
He said, “You see, when we stayed at the rock, I forgot the fish. It was none but Satan who made me forget it to tell you about it - and it made its way into the sea in an amazing manner.”

He replied, “Do you remember when we rested by the rock? ˹That is when˺ I forgot the fish. None made me forget to mention this except Satan. And the fish made its way into the sea miraculously.”[[ Another possible translation: “The ˹salted˺ fish must have made its way into the sea. How strange!”]]

The servant said: "Did you see what happened? When we betook ourselves to the rock to take rest, I forgot the fish - and it is only Satan who caused me to forget to mention it to you - so that it made its way into the sea in a strange manner."

He said: "You see, I forgot the fish on the rock where we had stopped. Only Satan made me forget to mention this; but the wonder is the fish escaped to the sea."

He (- the young comrade) replied, `Did you see (what happened) when we betook ourselves to the rock for shelter, I forgot (all about) the fish; and none but satan made me forget to mention this (to you) and behold! it made its way into the river. What a wonder (that I should thus forget)!
English Literal
He said: "Did you see/understand when we took refuge to the rock, so that I, I forgot the fish/large fish/whale and nothing made me forget it that I remember it except the devil, and it took/received its way path in the sea/ocean/river (in) astonishment/surprise/amazement."

He said, “Just imagine - when we had taken shelter near the rock, so indeed I forgot the fish; and none but Satan caused me to forget to mention it; and the fish took its way into the sea - its amazing!”

Tafsir jalalayn
He said, `Do you see? -- in other words, remember, when we sheltered at the rock, in that location, indeed I forgot the fish -- and none but Satan made me forget (al-shaytn, `Satan', substitutes for the [suffixed pronoun] h' [of ansn-hu]) to mention it (an adhkurahu, an inclusive substitution, in other words [it should be understood as] ansn dhikrahu, `he [Satan] made me forget the mentioning of it') -- and it, the fish, made its way into the sea in an amazing manner' (`ajaban constitutes the second direct object), that is to say, Moses and his lad were amazed by it, because of what has already been explained concerning it.
Tafseer Ibn Kathir
قَالَ أَرَأَيْتَ إِذْ أَوَيْنَا إِلَى الصَّخْرَةِ فَإِنِّي نَسِيتُ الْحُوتَ وَمَا أَنسَانِيهُ إِلاَّ الشَّيْطَانُ أَنْ أَذْكُرَهُ
He said;Do you remember when we betook ourselves to the rock I indeed forgot the fish; none but Shaytan made me forget to remember it...
Then he said,

وَاتَّخَذَ سَبِيلَهُ
It took its course,
meaning its path,
...
فِي الْبَحْرِ عَجَبًا
