(The Cave)

81

فَاَرَدْنَآ اَنْ يُّبْدِلَهُمَا رَبُّهُمَا خَيْرًا مِّنْهُ زَكٰوةً وَّاَقْرَبَ رُحْمًا ٨١

fa-aradnā
فَأَرَدْنَآ
So we intended
an
أَن
that
yub'dilahumā
يُبْدِلَهُمَا
would change for them
rabbuhumā
رَبُّهُمَا
their Lord
khayran
خَيْرًا
a better
min'hu
مِّنْهُ
than him
zakatan
زَكَوٰةً
(in) purity
wa-aqraba
وَأَقْرَبَ
and nearer
ruḥ'man
رُحْمًا
(in) affection
So we intended that their Lord should substitute for them one better than him in purity and nearer to mercy. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 81)
Tafsir
82

وَاَمَّا الْجِدَارُ فَكَانَ لِغُلٰمَيْنِ يَتِيْمَيْنِ فِى الْمَدِيْنَةِ وَكَانَ تَحْتَهٗ كَنْزٌ لَّهُمَا وَكَانَ اَبُوْهُمَا صَالِحًا ۚفَاَرَادَ رَبُّكَ اَنْ يَّبْلُغَآ اَشُدَّهُمَا وَيَسْتَخْرِجَا كَنْزَهُمَا رَحْمَةً مِّنْ رَّبِّكَۚ وَمَا فَعَلْتُهٗ عَنْ اَمْرِيْۗ ذٰلِكَ تَأْوِيْلُ مَا لَمْ تَسْطِعْ عَّلَيْهِ صَبْرًاۗ ࣖ ٨٢

wa-ammā
وَأَمَّا
And as for
l-jidāru
ٱلْجِدَارُ
the wall
fakāna
فَكَانَ
it was
lighulāmayni
لِغُلَٰمَيْنِ
for two orphan boys
yatīmayni
يَتِيمَيْنِ
for two orphan boys
فِى
in
l-madīnati
ٱلْمَدِينَةِ
the town
wakāna
وَكَانَ
and was
taḥtahu
تَحْتَهُۥ
underneath it
kanzun
كَنزٌ
a treasure
lahumā
لَّهُمَا
for them
wakāna
وَكَانَ
and was
abūhumā
أَبُوهُمَا
their father
ṣāliḥan
صَٰلِحًا
righteous
fa-arāda
فَأَرَادَ
So intended
rabbuka
رَبُّكَ
your Lord
an
أَن
that
yablughā
يَبْلُغَآ
they reach
ashuddahumā
أَشُدَّهُمَا
their maturity
wayastakhrijā
وَيَسْتَخْرِجَا
and bring forth
kanzahumā
كَنزَهُمَا
their treasure
raḥmatan
رَحْمَةً
(as) a mercy
min
مِّن
from
rabbika
رَّبِّكَۚ
your Lord
wamā
وَمَا
And not
faʿaltuhu
فَعَلْتُهُۥ
I did it
ʿan
عَنْ
on
amrī
أَمْرِىۚ
my (own) accord
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
That
tawīlu
تَأْوِيلُ
(is the) interpretation
مَا
(of) what
lam
لَمْ
not
tasṭiʿ
تَسْطِع
you were able
ʿalayhi
عَّلَيْهِ
on it
ṣabran
صَبْرًا
(to have) patience"
And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure for them, and their father had been righteous. So your Lord intended that they reach maturity and extract their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. And I did it not of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience." (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 82)
Tafsir
83

وَيَسْـَٔلُوْنَكَ عَنْ ذِى الْقَرْنَيْنِۗ قُلْ سَاَتْلُوْا عَلَيْكُمْ مِّنْهُ ذِكْرًا ۗ ٨٣

wayasalūnaka
وَيَسْـَٔلُونَكَ
And they ask you
ʿan
عَن
about
dhī
ذِى
Dhul-qarnain
l-qarnayni
ٱلْقَرْنَيْنِۖ
Dhul-qarnain
qul
قُلْ
Say
sa-atlū
سَأَتْلُوا۟
"I will recite
ʿalaykum
عَلَيْكُم
to you
min'hu
مِّنْهُ
about him
dhik'ran
ذِكْرًا
a remembrance"
And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about Dhul-Qarnayn. Say, "I will recite to you about him a report." (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 83)
Tafsir
84

اِنَّا مَكَّنَّا لَهٗ فِى الْاَرْضِ وَاٰتَيْنٰهُ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ سَبَبًا ۙ ٨٤

innā
إِنَّا
Indeed We
makkannā
مَكَّنَّا
[We] established
lahu
لَهُۥ
[for] him
فِى
in
l-arḍi
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
waātaynāhu
وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُ
and We gave him
min
مِن
of
kulli
كُلِّ
every
shayin
شَىْءٍ
thing
sababan
سَبَبًا
a means
Indeed, We established him upon the earth, and We gave him from everything a way [i.e., means]. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 84)
Tafsir
85

فَاَتْبَعَ سَبَبًا ٨٥

fa-atbaʿa
فَأَتْبَعَ
So he followed
sababan
سَبَبًا
a course
So he followed a way (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 85)

86

حَتّٰىٓ اِذَا بَلَغَ مَغْرِبَ الشَّمْسِ وَجَدَهَا تَغْرُبُ فِيْ عَيْنٍ حَمِئَةٍ وَّوَجَدَ عِنْدَهَا قَوْمًا ەۗ قُلْنَا يٰذَا الْقَرْنَيْنِ اِمَّآ اَنْ تُعَذِّبَ وَاِمَّآ اَنْ تَتَّخِذَ فِيْهِمْ حُسْنًا ٨٦

ḥattā
حَتَّىٰٓ
Until
idhā
إِذَا
when
balagha
بَلَغَ
he reached
maghriba
مَغْرِبَ
(the) setting place
l-shamsi
ٱلشَّمْسِ
(of) the sun
wajadahā
وَجَدَهَا
he found it
taghrubu
تَغْرُبُ
setting
فِى
in
ʿaynin
عَيْنٍ
a spring
ḥami-atin
حَمِئَةٍ
(of) dark mud
wawajada
وَوَجَدَ
and he found
ʿindahā
عِندَهَا
near it
qawman
قَوْمًاۗ
a community
qul'nā
قُلْنَا
We said
yādhā
يَٰذَا
"O Dhul-qarnain!
l-qarnayni
ٱلْقَرْنَيْنِ
"O Dhul-qarnain!
immā
إِمَّآ
Either
an
أَن
[that]
tuʿadhiba
تُعَذِّبَ
you punish
wa-immā
وَإِمَّآ
or
an
أَن
[that]
tattakhidha
تَتَّخِذَ
you take
fīhim
فِيهِمْ
[in] them
ḥus'nan
حُسْنًا
(with) goodness"
Until, when he reached the setting of the sun [i.e., the west], he found it [as if] setting in a body of dark water, and he found near it a people. We [i.e., Allah] said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, either you punish [them] or else adopt among them [a way of] goodness." (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 86)
Tafsir
87

قَالَ اَمَّا مَنْ ظَلَمَ فَسَوْفَ نُعَذِّبُهٗ ثُمَّ يُرَدُّ اِلٰى رَبِّهٖ فَيُعَذِّبُهٗ عَذَابًا نُّكْرًا ٨٧

قَالَ
He said
ammā
أَمَّا
"As for
man
مَن
(one) who
ẓalama
ظَلَمَ
wrongs
fasawfa
فَسَوْفَ
then soon
nuʿadhibuhu
نُعَذِّبُهُۥ
we will punish him
thumma
ثُمَّ
Then
yuraddu
يُرَدُّ
he will be returned
ilā
إِلَىٰ
to
rabbihi
رَبِّهِۦ
his Lord
fayuʿadhibuhu
فَيُعَذِّبُهُۥ
and He will punish him
ʿadhāban
عَذَابًا
(with) a punishment
nuk'ran
نُّكْرًا
terrible
He said, "As for one who wrongs, we will punish him. Then he will be returned to his Lord, and He will punish him with a terrible punishment [i.e., Hellfire]. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 87)
Tafsir
88

وَاَمَّا مَنْ اٰمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَلَهٗ جَزَاۤءً ۨالْحُسْنٰىۚ وَسَنَقُوْلُ لَهٗ مِنْ اَمْرِنَا يُسْرًا ۗ ٨٨

wa-ammā
وَأَمَّا
But as for
man
مَنْ
(one) who
āmana
ءَامَنَ
believes
waʿamila
وَعَمِلَ
and does
ṣāliḥan
صَٰلِحًا
righteous (deeds)
falahu
فَلَهُۥ
then for him
jazāan
جَزَآءً
(is) a reward
l-ḥus'nā
ٱلْحُسْنَىٰۖ
good
wasanaqūlu
وَسَنَقُولُ
And we will speak
lahu
لَهُۥ
to him
min
مِنْ
from
amrinā
أَمْرِنَا
our command
yus'ran
يُسْرًا
(with) ease"
But as for one who believes and does righteousness, he will have a reward of the best [i.e., Paradise], and we [i.e., Dhul-Qarnayn] will speak to him from our command with ease." (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 88)

ثُمَّ اَتْبَعَ سَبَبًا ٨٩

thumma
ثُمَّ
Then
atbaʿa
أَتْبَعَ
he followed
sababan
سَبَبًا
(a) course
Then he followed a way (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 89)

90

حَتّٰىٓ اِذَا بَلَغَ مَطْلِعَ الشَّمْسِ وَجَدَهَا تَطْلُعُ عَلٰى قَوْمٍ لَّمْ نَجْعَلْ لَّهُمْ مِّنْ دُوْنِهَا سِتْرًا ۙ ٩٠

حَتَّىٰٓ
Until

إِذَا
when

بَلَغَ
he reached
maṭliʿa
مَطْلِعَ
(the) rising place
l-shamsi
ٱلشَّمْسِ
(of) the sun
wajadahā
وَجَدَهَا
and he found it
taṭluʿu
تَطْلُعُ
rising
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
on
qawmin
قَوْمٍ
a community
lam
لَّمْ
not
najʿal
نَجْعَل
We made
lahum
لَّهُم
for them
min
مِّن
against it
dūnihā
دُونِهَا
against it
sit'ran
سِتْرًا
any shelter
Until, when he came to the rising of the sun [i.e., the east], he found it rising on a people for whom We had not made against it any shield. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 90)
