(The Cave)

71

فَانْطَلَقَاۗ حَتّٰٓى اِذَا رَكِبَا فِى السَّفِيْنَةِ خَرَقَهَاۗ قَالَ اَخَرَقْتَهَا لِتُغْرِقَ اَهْلَهَاۚ لَقَدْ جِئْتَ شَيْـًٔا اِمْرًا ٧١

fa-inṭalaqā
فَٱنطَلَقَا
So they both set out
ḥattā
حَتَّىٰٓ
until
idhā
إِذَا
when
rakibā
رَكِبَا
they had embarked
فِى
on
l-safīnati
ٱلسَّفِينَةِ
the ship
kharaqahā
خَرَقَهَاۖ
he made a hole in it
qāla
قَالَ
He said
akharaqtahā
أَخَرَقْتَهَا
"Have you made a hole in it
litugh'riqa
لِتُغْرِقَ
to drown
ahlahā
أَهْلَهَا
its people?
laqad
لَقَدْ
Certainly
ji'ta
جِئْتَ
you have done
shayan
شَيْـًٔا
a thing
im'ran
إِمْرًا
grave"
So they set out, until when they had embarked on the ship, he [i.e., al-Khidhr] tore it open. [Moses] said, "Have you torn it open to drown its people? You have certainly done a grave thing." (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 71)
Tafsir
72

قَالَ اَلَمْ اَقُلْ اِنَّكَ لَنْ تَسْتَطِيْعَ مَعِيَ صَبْرًا ٧٢

qāla
قَالَ
He said
alam
أَلَمْ
"Did not
aqul
أَقُلْ
I say
innaka
إِنَّكَ
indeed you
lan
لَن
never
tastaṭīʿa
تَسْتَطِيعَ
will be able
maʿiya
مَعِىَ
with me
ṣabran
صَبْرًا
(to have) patience?"
[Al-Khidhr] said, "Did I not say that with me you would never be able to have patience?" (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 72)
Tafsir
73

قَالَ لَا تُؤَاخِذْنِيْ بِمَا نَسِيْتُ وَلَا تُرْهِقْنِيْ مِنْ اَمْرِيْ عُسْرًا ٧٣

قَالَ
He said
لَا
"(Do) not
tuākhidh'nī
تُؤَاخِذْنِى
blame me
bimā
بِمَا
for what
nasītu
نَسِيتُ
I forgot
walā
وَلَا
and (do) not
tur'hiq'nī
تُرْهِقْنِى
be hard (upon) me
min
مِنْ
in
amrī
أَمْرِى
my affair
ʿus'ran
عُسْرًا
(raising) difficulty"
[Moses] said, "Do not blame me for what I forgot and do not overwhelm me in my matter with difficulty." (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 73)
Tafsir
74

فَانْطَلَقَا ۗحَتّٰٓى اِذَا لَقِيَا غُلٰمًا فَقَتَلَهٗ ۙقَالَ اَقَتَلْتَ نَفْسًا زَكِيَّةً؈ۢبِغَيْرِ نَفْسٍۗ لَقَدْ جِئْتَ شَيْـًٔا نُكْرًا ۔ ٧٤

fa-inṭalaqā
فَٱنطَلَقَا
Then they both set out
ḥattā
حَتَّىٰٓ
until
idhā
إِذَا
when
laqiyā
لَقِيَا
they met
ghulāman
غُلَٰمًا
a boy
faqatalahu
فَقَتَلَهُۥ
then he killed him
qāla
قَالَ
He said
aqatalta
أَقَتَلْتَ
"Have you killed
nafsan
نَفْسًا
a soul
zakiyyatan
زَكِيَّةًۢ
pure
bighayri
بِغَيْرِ
for other than
nafsin
نَفْسٍ
a soul?
laqad
لَّقَدْ
Certainly
ji'ta
جِئْتَ
you have done
shayan
شَيْـًٔا
a thing
nuk'ran
نُّكْرًا
evil"
So they set out, until when they met a boy, he [i.e., al-Khidhr] killed him. [Moses] said, "Have you killed a pure soul for other than [having killed] a soul? You have certainly done a deplorable thing." (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 74)
Tafsir
75

۞ قَالَ اَلَمْ اَقُلْ لَّكَ اِنَّكَ لَنْ تَسْتَطِيْعَ مَعِيَ صَبْرًا ٧٥

qāla
قَالَ
He said
alam
أَلَمْ
"Did not
aqul
أَقُل
I say
laka
لَّكَ
to you
innaka
إِنَّكَ
that you
lan
لَن
never
tastaṭīʿa
تَسْتَطِيعَ
will be able
maʿiya
مَعِىَ
with me
ṣabran
صَبْرًا
(to have) patience?"
[Al-Khidhr] said, "Did I not tell you that with me you would never be able to have patience?" (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 75)
Tafsir
76

قَالَ اِنْ سَاَلْتُكَ عَنْ شَيْءٍۢ بَعْدَهَا فَلَا تُصٰحِبْنِيْۚ قَدْ بَلَغْتَ مِنْ لَّدُنِّيْ عُذْرًا ٧٦

قَالَ
He said

سَأَلْتُكَ
I ask you
ʿan
عَن
about
shayin
شَىْءٍۭ
anything
baʿdahā
بَعْدَهَا
after it
falā
فَلَا
then (do) not
tuṣāḥib'nī
تُصَٰحِبْنِىۖ
keep me as a companion
qad
قَدْ
Verily
balaghta
بَلَغْتَ
you have reached
min
مِن
from me
ladunnī
لَّدُنِّى
from me
ʿudh'ran
عُذْرًا
an excuse"
[Moses] said, "If I should ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have obtained from me an excuse." (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 76)

77

فَانْطَلَقَا ۗحَتّٰىٓ اِذَآ اَتَيَآ اَهْلَ قَرْيَةِ ِۨاسْتَطْعَمَآ اَهْلَهَا فَاَبَوْا اَنْ يُّضَيِّفُوْهُمَا فَوَجَدَا فِيْهَا جِدَارًا يُّرِيْدُ اَنْ يَّنْقَضَّ فَاَقَامَهٗ ۗقَالَ لَوْ شِئْتَ لَتَّخَذْتَ عَلَيْهِ اَجْرًا ٧٧

fa-inṭalaqā
فَٱنطَلَقَا
So they set out
ḥattā
حَتَّىٰٓ
until
idhā
إِذَآ
when
atayā
أَتَيَآ
they came
ahla
أَهْلَ
(to the) people
qaryatin
قَرْيَةٍ
(of) a town
is'taṭʿamā
ٱسْتَطْعَمَآ
they asked for food
ahlahā
أَهْلَهَا
(from) its people
fa-abaw
فَأَبَوْا۟
but they refused
an
أَن
to
yuḍayyifūhumā
يُضَيِّفُوهُمَا
offer them hospitality
fawajadā
فَوَجَدَا
Then they found
fīhā
فِيهَا
in it
jidāran
جِدَارًا
a wall
yurīdu
يُرِيدُ
(that) want(ed)
an
أَن
to
yanqaḍḍa
يَنقَضَّ
collapse
fa-aqāmahu
فَأَقَامَهُۥۖ
so he set it straight
qāla
قَالَ
He said
law
لَوْ
"If
shi'ta
شِئْتَ
you wished
lattakhadhta
لَتَّخَذْتَ
surely you (could) have taken
ʿalayhi
عَلَيْهِ
for it
ajran
أَجْرًا
a payment"
So they set out, until when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality. And they found therein a wall about to collapse, so he [i.e., al-Khidhr] restored it. [Moses] said, "If you wished, you could have taken for it a payment." (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 77)
Tafsir
78

قَالَ هٰذَا فِرَاقُ بَيْنِيْ وَبَيْنِكَۚ سَاُنَبِّئُكَ بِتَأْوِيْلِ مَا لَمْ تَسْتَطِعْ عَّلَيْهِ صَبْرًا ٧٨

قَالَ
He said

هَٰذَا
"This
firāqu
فِرَاقُ
(is) parting
baynī
بَيْنِى
between me
wabaynika
وَبَيْنِكَۚ
and between you
sa-unabbi-uka
سَأُنَبِّئُكَ
I will inform you
bitawīli
بِتَأْوِيلِ
of (the) interpretation
مَا
(of) what
lam
لَمْ
not
tastaṭiʿ
تَسْتَطِع
you were able
ʿalayhi
عَّلَيْهِ
on it
ṣabran
صَبْرًا
(to have) patience
[Al-Khidhr] said, "This is parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 78)
Tafsir
79

اَمَّا السَّفِيْنَةُ فَكَانَتْ لِمَسٰكِيْنَ يَعْمَلُوْنَ فِى الْبَحْرِ فَاَرَدْتُّ اَنْ اَعِيْبَهَاۗ وَكَانَ وَرَاۤءَهُمْ مَّلِكٌ يَّأْخُذُ كُلَّ سَفِيْنَةٍ غَصْبًا ٧٩

أَمَّا
As for
l-safīnatu
ٱلسَّفِينَةُ
the ship
fakānat
فَكَانَتْ
it was
limasākīna
لِمَسَٰكِينَ
of (the) poor people
yaʿmalūna
يَعْمَلُونَ
working
فِى
in
l-baḥri
ٱلْبَحْرِ
the sea
fa-aradttu
فَأَرَدتُّ
So I intended
an
أَنْ
that
aʿībahā
أَعِيبَهَا
I cause defect (in) it
wakāna
وَكَانَ
(as there) was
warāahum
وَرَآءَهُم
after them
malikun
مَّلِكٌ
a king
yakhudhu
يَأْخُذُ
who seized
kulla
كُلَّ
every
safīnatin
سَفِينَةٍ
ship
ghaṣban
غَصْبًا
(by) force
As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea. So I intended to cause defect in it as there was after them a king who seized every [good] ship by force. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 79)
Tafsir
80

وَاَمَّا الْغُلٰمُ فَكَانَ اَبَوَاهُ مُؤْمِنَيْنِ فَخَشِيْنَآ اَنْ يُّرْهِقَهُمَا طُغْيَانًا وَّكُفْرًا ۚ ٨٠

wa-ammā
وَأَمَّا
And as for
l-ghulāmu
ٱلْغُلَٰمُ
the boy
fakāna
فَكَانَ
his parents were
abawāhu
أَبَوَاهُ
his parents were
mu'minayni
مُؤْمِنَيْنِ
believers
fakhashīnā
فَخَشِينَآ
and we feared
an
أَن
that
yur'hiqahumā
يُرْهِقَهُمَا
he would overburden them
ṭugh'yānan
طُغْيَٰنًا
(by) transgression
wakuf'ran
وَكُفْرًا
and disbelief
And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would overburden them by transgression and disbelief. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 80)
