(The Cave)

11

فَضَرَبْنَا عَلٰٓى اٰذَانِهِمْ فِى الْكَهْفِ سِنِيْنَ عَدَدًاۙ ١١

faḍarabnā
فَضَرَبْنَا
So We cast
ʿalā
عَلَىٰٓ
over
ādhānihim
ءَاذَانِهِمْ
their ears
فِى
in
l-kahfi
ٱلْكَهْفِ
the cave
sinīna
سِنِينَ
years -
ʿadadan
عَدَدًا
a number
So We cast [a cover of sleep] over their ears within the cave for a number of years. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 11)
Tafsir
12

ثُمَّ بَعَثْنٰهُمْ لِنَعْلَمَ اَيُّ الْحِزْبَيْنِ اَحْصٰى لِمَا لَبِثُوْٓا اَمَدًا ࣖ ١٢

thumma
ثُمَّ
Then
baʿathnāhum
بَعَثْنَٰهُمْ
We raised them up
linaʿlama
لِنَعْلَمَ
that We make evident
ayyu
أَىُّ
which
l-ḥiz'bayni
ٱلْحِزْبَيْنِ
(of) the two parties
aḥṣā
أَحْصَىٰ
best calculated
limā
لِمَا
for what
labithū
لَبِثُوٓا۟
(they had) remained
amadan
أَمَدًا
(in) time
Then We awakened them that We might show which of the two factions was most precise in calculating what [extent] they had remained in time. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 12)
Tafsir
13

نَحْنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ نَبَاَهُمْ بِالْحَقِّۗ اِنَّهُمْ فِتْيَةٌ اٰمَنُوْا بِرَبِّهِمْ وَزِدْنٰهُمْ هُدًىۖ ١٣

naḥnu
نَّحْنُ
We
naquṣṣu
نَقُصُّ
narrate
ʿalayka
عَلَيْكَ
to you
naba-ahum
نَبَأَهُم
their story
bil-ḥaqi
بِٱلْحَقِّۚ
in truth
innahum
إِنَّهُمْ
Indeed they (were)
fit'yatun
فِتْيَةٌ
youths
āmanū
ءَامَنُوا۟
who believed
birabbihim
بِرَبِّهِمْ
in their Lord
wazid'nāhum
وَزِدْنَٰهُمْ
and We increased them
hudan
هُدًى
(in) guidance
It is We who relate to you, [O Muhammad], their story in truth. Indeed, they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 13)
Tafsir
14

وَّرَبَطْنَا عَلٰى قُلُوْبِهِمْ اِذْ قَامُوْا فَقَالُوْا رَبُّنَا رَبُّ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِ لَنْ نَّدْعُوَا۟ مِنْ دُوْنِهٖٓ اِلٰهًا لَّقَدْ قُلْنَآ اِذًا شَطَطًا ١٤

warabaṭnā
وَرَبَطْنَا
And We made firm
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
[on]
qulūbihim
قُلُوبِهِمْ
their hearts
idh
إِذْ
when
qāmū
قَامُوا۟
they stood up
faqālū
فَقَالُوا۟
and said
rabbunā
رَبُّنَا
"Our Lord
rabbu
رَبُّ
(is) the Lord
l-samāwāti
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
(of) the heavens
wal-arḍi
وَٱلْأَرْضِ
and the earth
lan
لَن
Never
nadʿuwā
نَّدْعُوَا۟
we will invoke
min
مِن
besides Him
dūnihi
دُونِهِۦٓ
besides Him
ilāhan
إِلَٰهًاۖ
any god
laqad
لَّقَدْ
Certainly
qul'nā
قُلْنَآ
we would have said
idhan
إِذًا
then
shaṭaṭan
شَطَطًا
an enormity
And We bound [i.e., made firm] their hearts when they stood up and said, "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Never will we invoke besides Him any deity. We would have certainly spoken, then, an excessive transgression. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 14)
Tafsir
15

هٰٓؤُلَاۤءِ قَوْمُنَا اتَّخَذُوْا مِنْ دُوْنِهٖٓ اٰلِهَةًۗ لَوْلَا يَأْتُوْنَ عَلَيْهِمْ بِسُلْطٰنٍۢ بَيِّنٍۗ فَمَنْ اَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ افْتَرٰى عَلَى اللّٰهِ كَذِبًاۗ ١٥

hāulāi
هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ
These
qawmunā
قَوْمُنَا
our people
ittakhadhū
ٱتَّخَذُوا۟
have taken
min
مِن
besides Him
dūnihi
دُونِهِۦٓ
besides Him
ālihatan
ءَالِهَةًۖ
gods
lawlā
لَّوْلَا
Why not
yatūna
يَأْتُونَ
they come
ʿalayhim
عَلَيْهِم
to them
bisul'ṭānin
بِسُلْطَٰنٍۭ
with an authority
bayyinin
بَيِّنٍۖ
clear?
faman
فَمَنْ
And who
aẓlamu
أَظْلَمُ
(is) more wrong
mimmani
مِمَّنِ
than (one) who
if'tarā
ٱفْتَرَىٰ
invents
ʿalā
عَلَى
against
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
kadhiban
كَذِبًا
a lie?
These, our people, have taken besides Him deities. Why do they not bring for [worship of] them a clear evidence? And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allah a lie?" (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 15)
Tafsir
16

وَاِذِ اعْتَزَلْتُمُوْهُمْ وَمَا يَعْبُدُوْنَ اِلَّا اللّٰهَ فَأْوٗٓا اِلَى الْكَهْفِ يَنْشُرْ لَكُمْ رَبُّكُمْ مِّنْ رَّحْمَتِهٖ وَيُهَيِّئْ لَكُمْ مِّنْ اَمْرِكُمْ مِّرْفَقًا ١٦

wa-idhi
وَإِذِ
And when
iʿ'tazaltumūhum
ٱعْتَزَلْتُمُوهُمْ
you withdraw from them
wamā
وَمَا
and what
yaʿbudūna
يَعْبُدُونَ
they worship
illā
إِلَّا
except
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
fawū
فَأْوُۥٓا۟
then retreat
ilā
إِلَى
to
l-kahfi
ٱلْكَهْفِ
the cave
yanshur
يَنشُرْ
Will spread
lakum
لَكُمْ
for you
rabbukum
رَبُّكُم
your Lord
min
مِّن
of
raḥmatihi
رَّحْمَتِهِۦ
His Mercy
wayuhayyi
وَيُهَيِّئْ
and will facilitate
lakum
لَكُم
for you
min
مِّنْ
[from]
amrikum
أَمْرِكُم
your affair
mir'faqan
مِّرْفَقًا
(in) ease"
[The youths said to one another], "And when you have withdrawn from them and that which they worship other than Allah, retreat to the cave. Your Lord will spread out for you of His mercy and will prepare for you from your affair facility." (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 16)
Tafsir
17

۞ وَتَرَى الشَّمْسَ اِذَا طَلَعَتْ تَّزَاوَرُ عَنْ كَهْفِهِمْ ذَاتَ الْيَمِيْنِ وَاِذَا غَرَبَتْ تَّقْرِضُهُمْ ذَاتَ الشِّمَالِ وَهُمْ فِيْ فَجْوَةٍ مِّنْهُۗ ذٰلِكَ مِنْ اٰيٰتِ اللّٰهِ ۗمَنْ يَّهْدِ اللّٰهُ فَهُوَ الْمُهْتَدِ وَمَنْ يُّضْلِلْ فَلَنْ تَجِدَ لَهٗ وَلِيًّا مُّرْشِدًا ࣖ ١٧

watarā
وَتَرَى
And you (might) have seen
l-shamsa
ٱلشَّمْسَ
the sun
idhā
إِذَا
when
ṭalaʿat
طَلَعَت
it rose
tazāwaru
تَّزَٰوَرُ
inclining away
ʿan
عَن
from
kahfihim
كَهْفِهِمْ
their cave
dhāta
ذَاتَ
to
l-yamīni
ٱلْيَمِينِ
the right
wa-idhā
وَإِذَا
and when
gharabat
غَرَبَت
it set
taqriḍuhum
تَّقْرِضُهُمْ
passing away from them
dhāta
ذَاتَ
to
l-shimāli
ٱلشِّمَالِ
the left
wahum
وَهُمْ
while they
فِى
(lay) in
fajwatin
فَجْوَةٍ
the open space
min'hu
مِّنْهُۚ
thereof
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
That
min
مِنْ
(was) from
āyāti
ءَايَٰتِ
(the) Signs
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِۗ
(of) Allah
man
مَن
Whoever
yahdi
يَهْدِ
Allah guides
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah guides
fahuwa
فَهُوَ
and he
l-muh'tadi
ٱلْمُهْتَدِۖ
(is) the guided one
waman
وَمَن
and whoever
yuḍ'lil
يُضْلِلْ
He lets go astray
falan
فَلَن
then never
tajida
تَجِدَ
you will find
lahu
لَهُۥ
for him
waliyyan
وَلِيًّا
a protector
mur'shidan
مُّرْشِدًا
a guide
And [had you been present], you would see the sun when it rose, inclining away from their cave on the right, and when it set, passing away from them on the left, while they were [lying] within an open space thereof. That was from the signs of Allah. He whom Allah guides is the [rightly] guided, but he whom He sends astray – never will you find for him a protecting guide. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 17)
Tafsir
18

وَتَحْسَبُهُمْ اَيْقَاظًا وَّهُمْ رُقُوْدٌ ۖوَّنُقَلِّبُهُمْ ذَاتَ الْيَمِيْنِ وَذَاتَ الشِّمَالِ ۖوَكَلْبُهُمْ بَاسِطٌ ذِرَاعَيْهِ بِالْوَصِيْدِۗ لَوِ اطَّلَعْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ لَوَلَّيْتَ مِنْهُمْ فِرَارًا وَّلَمُلِئْتَ مِنْهُمْ رُعْبًا ١٨

wataḥsabuhum
وَتَحْسَبُهُمْ
And you (would) think them
ayqāẓan
أَيْقَاظًا
awake
wahum
وَهُمْ
while they
ruqūdun
رُقُودٌۚ
(were) asleep
wanuqallibuhum
وَنُقَلِّبُهُمْ
And We turned them
dhāta
ذَاتَ
to
l-yamīni
ٱلْيَمِينِ
the right
wadhāta
وَذَاتَ
and to
l-shimāli
ٱلشِّمَالِۖ
the left
wakalbuhum
وَكَلْبُهُم
while their dog
bāsiṭun
بَٰسِطٌ
stretched
dhirāʿayhi
ذِرَاعَيْهِ
his two forelegs
bil-waṣīdi
بِٱلْوَصِيدِۚ
at the entrance
lawi
لَوِ
If
iṭṭalaʿta
ٱطَّلَعْتَ
you had looked
ʿalayhim
عَلَيْهِمْ
at them
lawallayta
لَوَلَّيْتَ
you (would) have surely turned back
min'hum
مِنْهُمْ
from them
firāran
فِرَارًا
(in) flight
walamuli'ta
وَلَمُلِئْتَ
and surely you would have been filled
min'hum
مِنْهُمْ
by them
ruʿ'ban
رُعْبًا
(with) terror
And you would think them awake, while they were asleep. And We turned them to the right and to the left, while their dog stretched his forelegs at the entrance. If you had looked at them, you would have turned from them in flight and been filled by them with terror. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 18)
Tafsir
19

وَكَذٰلِكَ بَعَثْنٰهُمْ لِيَتَسَاۤءَلُوْا بَيْنَهُمْۗ قَالَ قَاۤىِٕلٌ مِّنْهُمْ كَمْ لَبِثْتُمْۗ قَالُوْا لَبِثْنَا يَوْمًا اَوْ بَعْضَ يَوْمٍۗ قَالُوْا رَبُّكُمْ اَعْلَمُ بِمَا لَبِثْتُمْۗ فَابْعَثُوْٓا اَحَدَكُمْ بِوَرِقِكُمْ هٰذِهٖٓ اِلَى الْمَدِيْنَةِ فَلْيَنْظُرْ اَيُّهَآ اَزْكٰى طَعَامًا فَلْيَأْتِكُمْ بِرِزْقٍ مِّنْهُ وَلْيَتَلَطَّفْ وَلَا يُشْعِرَنَّ بِكُمْ اَحَدًا ١٩

wakadhālika
وَكَذَٰلِكَ
And similarly
baʿathnāhum
بَعَثْنَٰهُمْ
We raised them
liyatasāalū
لِيَتَسَآءَلُوا۟
that they might question
baynahum
بَيْنَهُمْۚ
among them
qāla
قَالَ
Said
qāilun
قَآئِلٌ
a speaker
min'hum
مِّنْهُمْ
among them
kam
كَمْ
"How long
labith'tum
لَبِثْتُمْۖ
have you remained?"
qālū
قَالُوا۟
They said
labith'nā
لَبِثْنَا
"We have remained
yawman
يَوْمًا
a day
aw
أَوْ
or
baʿḍa
بَعْضَ
a part
yawmin
يَوْمٍۚ
(of) a day"
qālū
قَالُوا۟
They said
rabbukum
رَبُّكُمْ
"Your Lord
aʿlamu
أَعْلَمُ
knows best
bimā
بِمَا
how long
labith'tum
لَبِثْتُمْ
you have remained
fa-ib'ʿathū
فَٱبْعَثُوٓا۟
So send
aḥadakum
أَحَدَكُم
one of you
biwariqikum
بِوَرِقِكُمْ
with this silver coin of yours
hādhihi
هَٰذِهِۦٓ
with this silver coin of yours
ilā
إِلَى
to
l-madīnati
ٱلْمَدِينَةِ
the city
falyanẓur
فَلْيَنظُرْ
and let him see
ayyuhā
أَيُّهَآ
which is
azkā
أَزْكَىٰ
the purest
ṭaʿāman
طَعَامًا
food
falyatikum
فَلْيَأْتِكُم
and let him bring to you
biriz'qin
بِرِزْقٍ
provision
min'hu
مِّنْهُ
from it
walyatalaṭṭaf
وَلْيَتَلَطَّفْ
and let him be cautious
walā
وَلَا
And let not be aware
yush'ʿiranna
يُشْعِرَنَّ
And let not be aware
bikum
بِكُمْ
about you
aḥadan
أَحَدًا
anyone"
And similarly, We awakened them that they might question one another. Said a speaker from among them, "How long have you remained [here]?" They said, "We have remained a day or part of a day." They said, "Your Lord is most knowing of how long you remained. So send one of you with this silver coin of yours to the city and let him look to which is the best of food and bring you provision from it and let him be cautious. And let no one be aware of you. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 19)
Tafsir
20

اِنَّهُمْ اِنْ يَّظْهَرُوْا عَلَيْكُمْ يَرْجُمُوْكُمْ اَوْ يُعِيْدُوْكُمْ فِيْ مِلَّتِهِمْ وَلَنْ تُفْلِحُوْٓا اِذًا اَبَدًا ٢٠

innahum
إِنَّهُمْ
"Indeed [they]
in
إِن
if
yaẓharū
يَظْهَرُوا۟
they come to know
ʿalaykum
عَلَيْكُمْ
about you
yarjumūkum
يَرْجُمُوكُمْ
they will stone you
aw
أَوْ
or
yuʿīdūkum
يُعِيدُوكُمْ
return you
فِى
to
millatihim
مِلَّتِهِمْ
their religion
walan
وَلَن
And never
tuf'liḥū
تُفْلِحُوٓا۟
will you succeed
idhan
إِذًا
then -
abadan
أَبَدًا
ever"
Indeed, if they come to know of you, they will stone you or return you to their religion. And never would you succeed, then – ever." (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 20)
