Al-Isra [17]: 8 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

عَسٰى رَبُّكُمْ اَنْ يَّرْحَمَكُمْۚ وَاِنْ عُدْتُّمْ عُدْنَاۘ وَجَعَلْنَا جَهَنَّمَ لِلْكٰفِرِيْنَ حَصِيْرًا (الإسراء : ١٧)

ʿasā
عَسَىٰ
"(It) may be
rabbukum
رَبُّكُمْ
that your Lord
an
أَن
that your Lord
yarḥamakum
يَرْحَمَكُمْۚ
(may) have mercy upon you
wa-in
وَإِنْ
But if
ʿudttum
عُدتُّمْ
you return
ʿud'nā
عُدْنَاۘ
We will return
wajaʿalnā
وَجَعَلْنَا
And We have made
jahannama
جَهَنَّمَ
Hell
lil'kāfirīna
لِلْكَٰفِرِينَ
for the disbelievers
ḥaṣīran
حَصِيرًا
a prison-bed"

Transliteration:

'Asaa rabbukum anyyarhamakum; wa in 'uttum 'udnaa; wa ja'alnaa jahannama lilkaafireena haseera (QS. al-ʾIsrāʾ:8)

English / Sahih Translation:

[Then Allah said], "It is expected, [if you repent], that your Lord will have mercy upon you. But if you return [to sin], We will return [to punishment]. And We have made Hell, for the disbelievers, a prison-bed." (QS. Al-Isra, ayah 8)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

May be your Lord would bestow mercy upon you. But if you do this again, We shall do that again, and We have made Jahannam (Hell) a prison for the disbelievers.”

Your Lord may haply be merciful to you. But if you repeat it, We shall do the same. We have constituted Hell as prison for unbelievers.

Still it is well-nigh that your Lord will again have mercy on you, (through Islam) but if you return (to mischief, We warn,) We too will return (to Our punishment), We have made Gehenna a prison-house for the ungrateful.

English Literal

Maybe/perhaps that (E) your Lord has mercy upon you, and if you returned, We returned, and We made/put Hell confining/surrounding for the disbelievers.

It is likely that your Lord may have mercy on you; and if you repeat the mischief, We will repeat the punishment; and We have made hell a prison for the disbelievers.

So when the second warning came, (We raised another people) that they might bring you to grief and that they might enter the Mosque as they entered it the first time, and that they might destroy, whatever they conquered, with utter destruction.

It may be that your Lord may show mercy unto you, but if you return (to sins), We shall return (to Our punishment). And We have made Hell a prison for the disbelievers.

Wahiduddin Khan

We said, "Your Lord may yet have mercy on you, but if you do the same again, so shall We: We have made Hell a prison for those who deny the truth."

Perhaps your Lord will have mercy on you. But if you revert, We will revert. We have made Hell a prison for the disbelievers.

Tafsir jalalayn

And We said in the Scripture; It may be that your Lord will have mercy upon you, after the second time, if you were to repent; but if you revert, to [working] corruption, We [too] will revert, to punishment. And assuredly they did revert by denying the Prophet (s), and so he was given power over them, through the slaying of the [Ban] Qurayza, the expulsion of the [Ban] Nadr and the exacting of the jizya-tax from them; and We have made Hell a dungeon for the disbelievers, a place of detention and a prison [for them].

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

عَسَى رَبُّكُمْ أَن يَرْحَمَكُمْ

with utter destruction. It may be that your Lord may show mercy unto you,

meaning that He may rid you of them.

وَإِنْ عُدتُّمْ عُدْنَا

but if you return (to sins), We shall return (to Our punishment).

meaning, if you return to causing mischief,

عُدْنَا
(We shall return) means,

We `will once again punish you in this world, along with the punishment and torment We save for you in the Hereafter.'

وَجَعَلْنَا جَهَنَّمَ لِلْكَافِرِينَ حَصِيرًا



And We have made Hell a prison (Hasir) for the disbelievers.

meaning, a place of permanent detention, a prison which cannot be avoided or escaped.

Ibn Abbas said,

"Hasir here means a jail."

Mujahid said,

"They will be detained in it."

Others said like- wise.

Al-Hasan said,

"Hasir means a bed of Fire."

Qatadah said;

"The Children of Israel returned to aggression, so Allah sent this group against them, Muhammad and his companions, who made them pay the Jizyah, with willing submission, and feeling themselves subdued.
