Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Isra Verse 69

Or, do you feel secure from that He takes you back to it (the sea) once again, and sends a heavy storm of wind upon you which drowns you because of your disbelief, and then you will find no one to help?

Or do you feel secure and have made sure that He will (not) send you back in it (- the sea) a second time (and) then send against you a fierce storm blast and drown you because of your ingratitude, for (if He does), you will find no helper in the matter for yourselves to protect you against Us.

English Literal

Or (did) you become safe/secure that (E) He returns/repeats you in it once/another again? So He sends on you a severe wind that breaks every thing in its path from the wind, so He drowns/sinks you because (of) what you disbelieved, then you do not find on Us with it a victorior/follower.

Or do you feel secure that He will not send you back a second time to sea and send against you a Qasif and drown you because of your disbelief Then you will not find any avenger therein against Us.

Or do you feel secure against His sending you back to sea once again, and raising a fierce gale against you and causing you to drown in requital for your ingratitude? You will find no helper against Us there.

Or are you confident that He will not return you to it once again, and unleash a hurricane against you, and drown you for your ingratitude? Then you will find no helper against Us.

Tafsir jalalayn

Or do you feel secure that He will not return you to it, that is, [to] the sea, a second time and unleash upon you a shattering gale, that is, a violent wind that shatters everything in its path, to destroy your ship, and drown you for your ungratefulness? And then you will not find for yourselves any redresser of this against Us, [any] helper or advocate to demand restitution from Us for what We [will] have done to you.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Perhaps He will send You back to the Sea

Allah says,

أَمْ أَمِنتُمْ

Or do you feel secure,

`you who turn away from Us after acknowledging Our Oneness at sea once you are back upon dry land,'

أَن يُعِيدَكُمْ فِيهِ تَارَةً أُخْرَى

that He will not send you back a second time to sea

فَيُرْسِلَ عَلَيْكُمْ قَاصِفا مِّنَ الرِّيحِ

and send against you a Qasif,

which will destroy your masts and sink your vessels.

Ibn Abbas and others said,

"Al-Qasifis the wind of the sea which destroys vessels and sinks them."

فَيُغْرِقَكُم بِمَا كَفَرْتُمْ

and drown you because of your disbelief,

means because of your rejection and turning away from Allah.

ثُمَّ لَا تَجِدُواْ لَكُمْ عَلَيْنَا بِهِ تَبِيعًا



Then you will not find any avenger therein against Us.

Ibn Abbas said that this means a helper.

Mujahid said,

"A helper who will avenge you,"

i.e., take revenge on your behalf.

Qatadah said it means,

"We are not afraid that anyone will pursue Us with anything of that nature (i.e., vengeance).
