Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Isra Verse 58

Al-Isra [17]: 58 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَاِنْ مِّنْ قَرْيَةٍ اِلَّا نَحْنُ مُهْلِكُوْهَا قَبْلَ يَوْمِ الْقِيٰمَةِ اَوْ مُعَذِّبُوْهَا عَذَابًا شَدِيْدًاۗ كَانَ ذٰلِكَ فىِ الْكِتٰبِ مَسْطُوْرًا (الإسراء : ١٧)

Transliteration:

Wa im min qaryatin illaa Nahnu muhlikoohaa qabla Yawmil Qiyaamati aw mu'az ziboohaa 'azaaban shadeedaa; kaana zaalika fil Kitaabi mastooraa (QS. al-ʾIsrāʾ:58)

English / Sahih Translation:

And there is no city but that We will destroy it before the Day of Resurrection or punish it with a severe punishment. That has ever been in the Register inscribed. (QS. Al-Isra, ayah 58)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

There is no town but We are to destroy it before the Doomsday, or punish it with severe punishment. That is what stands written in the Book.

There is not a ˹wicked˺ society that We will not destroy or punish with a severe torment before the Day of Judgment. That is written in the Record.

And there is no township but We shall destroy it or We shall subject it to a severe chastisement before the Day of Resurrection. That is written down in the book (- in the knowledge of God).

English Literal

And (there is) none from a village/urban city, except (that) We are making it die/destroying it before the Resurrection Day, or torturing it strong (severe) torture, that was/is in The Book written/inscribed/drafted.

Those whom they call upon, themselves seek the means of access to their Lord -- whoever of them is nearest -- and they hope for His mercy and fear His chastisement. Surely the chastisement of thy Lord is a thing to be cautious of.

Tafsir jalalayn

There is not a town -- its inhabitants are the ones meant -- but We shall destroy it before the Day of Resurrection, through death, or chastise it with terrible chastisement, by killing [its inhabitants] or otherwise. That has been inscribed in the Book, the Preserved Tablet (al-lawh al-mahfz).

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

The Destruction or Torment of all Disbelieving Towns before the Hour begins

Allah tells;

وَإِن مَّن قَرْيَةٍ إِلاَّ نَحْنُ مُهْلِكُوهَا قَبْلَ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ أَوْ مُعَذِّبُوهَا عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا كَانَ ذَلِك فِي الْكِتَابِ مَسْطُورًا



And there is not a town (population) but We shall destroy it before the Day of Resurrection, or punish it with a severe torment. That is written in the Book (of Our decrees).

Here Allah tells us that He has decreed and it is written in Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz (The Preserved Tablet) which is with Him, that there is no town that He will not destroy by wiping out all its people or by punishing them,
عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا
(with a severe torment), either by killing them or sending calamities upon them as He wills.

This will be because of their sins, as Allah says of the past nations;

وَمَا ظَلَمْنَـهُمْ وَلَـكِن ظَلَمُواْ أَنفُسَهُمْ

We wronged them not, but they wronged themselves. (11;101)

فَذَاقَتْ وَبَالَ أَمْرِهَا وَكَانَ عَـقِبَةُ أَمْرِهَا خُسْراً

So it tasted the evil result of its affair (disbelief), and the consequence of its affair (disbelief) was loss. (65;9)

وَكَأِيِّن مِّن قَرْيَةٍ عَتَتْ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهَا وَرُسُلِهِ

And many a town (population) revolted against the command of its Lord and His Messengers; (65;8)
