Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Isra Verse 56

Al-Isra [17]: 56 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قُلِ ادْعُوا الَّذِيْنَ زَعَمْتُمْ مِّنْ دُوْنِهٖ فَلَا يَمْلِكُوْنَ كَشْفَ الضُّرِّ عَنْكُمْ وَلَا تَحْوِيْلًا (الإسراء : ١٧)

Transliteration:

Qulid 'ul lazeena za'amtum min doonihee falaa yamlikoona kashfad durri'ankum wa laa tahweelaa (QS. al-ʾIsrāʾ:56)

English / Sahih Translation:

Say, "Invoke those you have claimed [as gods] besides Him, for they do not possess the [ability for] removal of adversity from you or [for its] transfer [to someone else]." (QS. Al-Isra, ayah 56)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

Say, “Call those whom you assume (to be gods), besides Him, while they have no power to remove distress from you, nor to change it.”

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Invoke those you claim ˹to be divine˺[[ i.e., Jesus, Ezra, and the angels. Idol worship is refuted in other passages such as {7:191}-198 and {34:22}.]] besides Him—they do not have the power to undo harm from you or transfer it ˹to someone else˺.”

Say, “Call upon those whom you claimed [to be gods] besides Him; they have no power to remove harm or avert it from you.”

Tell them: "Call upon those whom you fancy to be (your helpers) instead of Him! They have no power to remove any affliction from you, nor can they shift it (to any other)."

Say: "Call those whom you imagine to be gods besides Him; yet they have no power to relieve you of any distress or to avert it."

Proclaim, “Call upon those whom you assume besides Allah – so they do not have any power to relieve the misfortune from you nor to avert it.”

Say: "Call upon those (the angels, human beings, jinn,) whom you pretend are deities apart from Him! They have no power to remove any affliction from you nor can they make any changes in your conditions."

Say, `Call upon those whom you assert (to be gods) apart from Him, then (you will realize) they have no power to rid you of affliction nor to avert (it) or transfer it to others.´

English Literal

Say: "Call those whom you claimed/alleged from other than Him, so they do not own/posses the harm`s removals from you, and nor a change/movement ."

Proclaim, "Call upon those whom you assume besides Allah - so they do not have any power to relieve the misfortune from you nor to avert it."

Say, "Call on those other than Allah whom you assume to be gods." But they have no power to remove distress from you, nor to change it.

Say (O Muhammad SAW): "Call unto those besides Him whom you pretend [to be gods like angels, Iesa (Jesus), 'Uzair (Ezra), etc.]. They have neither the power to remove the adversity from you nor even to shift it from you to another person."

And thy Lord best knows those who are in the heavens and the earth. And certainly We made some of the prophets to excel others, and to David We gave the Zabur.

Call upon those you claim to be deities besides God and you will know that they have no power to remove affliction from you or to bring about any change [that you may desire].

Say, “Call upon those you claim besides Him. They have no power to relieve your adversity, nor can they change it.”

Tafsir jalalayn

Say, to them; `Call on those whom you assumed, to be gods, besides Him, such as the angels, Jesus and Ezra (`Uzayr); yet they have no power to rid you of misfortune nor to transfer, it to [persons] other than you.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

The gods of the Idolators can neither benefit nor harm; rather they themselves seek to draw close to Allah

Allah says;

قُلِ

Say,

O Muhammad to these idolators who worship things other than Allah,

ادْعُواْ الَّذِينَ زَعَمْتُم مِّن دُونِهِ

Call upon those - besides Him whom you pretend.

such as idols and rivals of Allah.

Even if you turn to them,

فَلَ يَمْلِكُونَ كَشْفَ الضُّرِّ عَنكُمْ

They have neither the power to remove the adversity from you,

they have no such power at all,

وَلَا تَحْوِيلً



nor even to shift (it from you to another person).

to lift the distress from you and give it to someone else.

The meaning is that the only one Who is able to do that is Allah Alone, with no partner or associate, Who is the One Who creates and issues commands.

قُلِ ادْعُواْ الَّذِينَ زَعَمْتُم

Say;"Call upon those whom you pretend,

Al-`Awfi reported from Ibn Abbas,

"The people of Shirk used to say, `we worship the angels and the Messiah and Uzayr,' while these (the angels and the Messiah and Uzayr) themselves call upon Allah.
