Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Isra Verse 54
Al-Isra [17]: 54 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer
رَبُّكُمْ اَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ اِنْ يَّشَأْ يَرْحَمْكُمْ اَوْ اِنْ يَّشَأْ يُعَذِّبْكُمْۗ وَمَآ اَرْسَلْنٰكَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَكِيْلًا (الإسراء : ١٧)

Transliteration:
Rabbukum a'lamu bikum iny yashaaa yarhamkum aw iny yashaa yu'azzibkum; wa maaa arsalnaaka 'alaihim wakeelaa(QS. al-ʾIsrāʾ:54)
English / Sahih Translation:
Your Lord is most knowing of you. If He wills, He will have mercy upon you; or if He wills, He will punish you. And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], over them as a manager. (QS. Al-Isra, ayah 54)

Your Lord knows you best. If He so wills, He will have mercy on you, and if He so wills, He will punish you, and We did not send you (O Prophet,) to become responsible for them.

English Literal
Your Lord (is) more knowledgeable with (of) you, if He wills/wants He has mercy upon you, and if He wills/wants He tortures you, and We did not send you (as) a guardian/protector/keeper on them.

Tafsir jalalayn
Your Lord knows you best. If He will, He will have mercy on you, by way of [granting you] repentance and faith, or, if He will, for you to be chastised, He will chastise you, by having you die in disbelief. And We did not send you to be a guardian over them, and so compel them to [embrace] faith -- this was [revealed] before the command to fight [them].
Tafseer Ibn Kathir
Allah says;
رَّبُّكُمْ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ
Your Lord knows you best;
O mankind, meaning, He knows best who among you deserves to be guided and who does not deserve to be guided.
إِن يَشَأْ يَرْحَمْكُمْ
if He wills, He will have mercy on you,
by helping you to obey Him and turn to Him.
أَوْ إِن يَشَأْ يُعَذِّبْكُمْ وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ
or if He wills, He will punish you. And We have not sent you (- O Muhammad -).
عَلَيْهِمْ وَكِيلً
as a guardian over them.
meaning, `We have sent you as a warner, so whoever obeys you, will enter Paradise and whoever disobeys you, will enter Hell.
