Al-Isra [17]: 37 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَلَا تَمْشِ فِى الْاَرْضِ مَرَحًاۚ اِنَّكَ لَنْ تَخْرِقَ الْاَرْضَ وَلَنْ تَبْلُغَ الْجِبَالَ طُوْلًا (الإسراء : ١٧)

Transliteration:

Wa laa tamshi fil ardi marahan innaka lan takhriqal arda wa lan tablughal jibaala toola (QS. al-ʾIsrāʾ:37)

English / Sahih Translation:

And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height. (QS. Al-Isra, ayah 37)

Do not walk on the earth in haughty style. You can neither tear the earth apart, nor can you match the mountains in height.

And do not walk in the earth/Planet Earth showing superiority, happiness and over confidence , that you will never reach (the) end (of)/tear apart the earth/Planet Earth, and you will never reach the mountains (in) height/length (be as tall as the mountains).

Tafsir jalalayn

And do not walk in the earth exultantly, that is, exultant with pride and conceit. Indeed you will not rend the earth, [you will not] pierce it and reach its depths with your pride, nor attain the mountains in height; the meaning is that you shall never attain such ends, so how can you be so arrogant?

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Condemnation of strutting

Allah forbids His servants to strut and walk in a boastful manner;

وَلَا تَمْشِ فِي الَارْضِ مَرَحًا

And walk not on the earth with conceit and arrogance.

meaning, walking in boastful manner and acting proud, like those who are arrogant oppressors.

إِنَّكَ لَن تَخْرِقَ الَارْضَ

Verily, you can neither rend nor penetrate the earth,

means, you cannot penetrate the earth with your walking.

This was the opinion of Ibn Jarir.

وَلَن تَبْلُغَ الْجِبَالَ طُولاً



nor can you attain a stature like the mountains in height.

كُلُّ ذَلِكَ كَانَ سَيٍّيُهُ عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ مَكْرُوهًا
