(The Night Journey)

31

وَلَا تَقْتُلُوْٓا اَوْلَادَكُمْ خَشْيَةَ اِمْلَاقٍۗ نَحْنُ نَرْزُقُهُمْ وَاِيَّاكُمْۗ اِنَّ قَتْلَهُمْ كَانَ خِطْـًٔا كَبِيْرًا ٣١

walā
وَلَا
And (do) not
taqtulū
تَقْتُلُوٓا۟
kill
awlādakum
أَوْلَٰدَكُمْ
your children
khashyata
خَشْيَةَ
(for) fear
im'lāqin
إِمْلَٰقٍۖ
(of) poverty
naḥnu
نَّحْنُ
We
narzuquhum
نَرْزُقُهُمْ
(We) provide for them
wa-iyyākum
وَإِيَّاكُمْۚ
and for you
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
qatlahum
قَتْلَهُمْ
their killing
kāna
كَانَ
is
khiṭ'an
خِطْـًٔا
a sin
kabīran
كَبِيرًا
great
And do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Indeed, their killing is ever a great sin. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 31)
Tafsir
32

وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا الزِّنٰىٓ اِنَّهٗ كَانَ فَاحِشَةً ۗوَسَاۤءَ سَبِيْلًا ٣٢

walā
وَلَا
And (do) not
taqrabū
تَقْرَبُوا۟
go near
l-zinā
ٱلزِّنَىٰٓۖ
adultery
innahu
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed it
kāna
كَانَ
is
fāḥishatan
فَٰحِشَةً
an immorality
wasāa
وَسَآءَ
and (an) evil
sabīlan
سَبِيلًا
way
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 32)
Tafsir
33

وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا النَّفْسَ الَّتِيْ حَرَّمَ اللّٰهُ اِلَّا بِالْحَقِّۗ وَمَنْ قُتِلَ مَظْلُوْمًا فَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا لِوَلِيِّهٖ سُلْطٰنًا فَلَا يُسْرِفْ فِّى الْقَتْلِۗ اِنَّهٗ كَانَ مَنْصُوْرًا ٣٣

walā
وَلَا
And (do) not
taqtulū
تَقْتُلُوا۟
kill
l-nafsa
ٱلنَّفْسَ
the soul
allatī
ٱلَّتِى
which
ḥarrama
حَرَّمَ
Allah has forbidden
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah has forbidden
illā
إِلَّا
except
bil-ḥaqi
بِٱلْحَقِّۗ
by right
waman
وَمَن
And whoever
qutila
قُتِلَ
(is) killed
maẓlūman
مَظْلُومًا
wrongfully
faqad
فَقَدْ
verily
jaʿalnā
جَعَلْنَا
We have made
liwaliyyihi
لِوَلِيِّهِۦ
for his heir
sul'ṭānan
سُلْطَٰنًا
an authority
falā
فَلَا
but not
yus'rif
يُسْرِف
he should exceed
فِّى
in
l-qatli
ٱلْقَتْلِۖ
the killing
innahu
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed, he
kāna
كَانَ
is
manṣūran
مَنصُورًا
helped
And do not kill the soul [i.e., person] which Allah has forbidden, except by right. And whoever is killed unjustly – We have given his heir authority, but let him not exceed limits in [the matter of] taking life. Indeed, he has been supported [by the law]. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 33)
Tafsir
34

وَلَا تَقْرَبُوْا مَالَ الْيَتِيْمِ اِلَّا بِالَّتِيْ هِيَ اَحْسَنُ حَتّٰى يَبْلُغَ اَشُدَّهٗۖ وَاَوْفُوْا بِالْعَهْدِۖ اِنَّ الْعَهْدَ كَانَ مَسْـُٔوْلًا ٣٤

walā
وَلَا
And (do) not
taqrabū
تَقْرَبُوا۟
come near
māla
مَالَ
(the) wealth
l-yatīmi
ٱلْيَتِيمِ
(of) the orphan
illā
إِلَّا
except
bi-allatī
بِٱلَّتِى
with what
hiya
هِىَ
[it] is
aḥsanu
أَحْسَنُ
best
ḥattā
حَتَّىٰ
until
yablugha
يَبْلُغَ
he reaches
ashuddahu
أَشُدَّهُۥۚ
his maturity
wa-awfū
وَأَوْفُوا۟
And fulfil
bil-ʿahdi
بِٱلْعَهْدِۖ
the covenant
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
l-ʿahda
ٱلْعَهْدَ
the covenant
kāna
كَانَ
will be
masūlan
مَسْـُٔولًا
questioned
And do not approach the property of an orphan, except in the way that is best, until he reaches maturity. And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 34)
Tafsir
35

وَاَوْفُوا الْكَيْلَ اِذَا كِلْتُمْ وَزِنُوْا بِالْقِسْطَاسِ الْمُسْتَقِيْمِۗ ذٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ وَّاَحْسَنُ تَأْوِيْلًا ٣٥

wa-awfū
وَأَوْفُوا۟
And give full
l-kayla
ٱلْكَيْلَ
[the] measure
idhā
إِذَا
when
kil'tum
كِلْتُمْ
you measure
wazinū
وَزِنُوا۟
and weigh
bil-qis'ṭāsi
بِٱلْقِسْطَاسِ
with the balance
l-mus'taqīmi
ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمِۚ
the straight
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
That
khayrun
خَيْرٌ
(is) good
wa-aḥsanu
وَأَحْسَنُ
and best
tawīlan
تَأْوِيلًا
(in) result
And give full measure when you measure, and weigh with an even [i.e., honest] balance. That is the best [way] and best in result. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 35)
Tafsir
36

وَلَا تَقْفُ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهٖ عِلْمٌ ۗاِنَّ السَّمْعَ وَالْبَصَرَ وَالْفُؤَادَ كُلُّ اُولٰۤىِٕكَ كَانَ عَنْهُ مَسْـُٔوْلًا ٣٦

walā
وَلَا
And (do) not
taqfu
تَقْفُ
pursue
مَا
what
laysa
لَيْسَ
not
laka
لَكَ
you have
bihi
بِهِۦ
of it
ʿil'mun
عِلْمٌۚ
any knowledge
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
l-samʿa
ٱلسَّمْعَ
the hearing
wal-baṣara
وَٱلْبَصَرَ
and the sight
wal-fuāda
وَٱلْفُؤَادَ
and the heart
kullu
كُلُّ
all
ulāika
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ
those
kāna
كَانَ
will be
ʿanhu
عَنْهُ
[about it]
masūlan
مَسْـُٔولًا
questioned
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart – about all those [one] will be questioned. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 36)
Tafsir
37

وَلَا تَمْشِ فِى الْاَرْضِ مَرَحًاۚ اِنَّكَ لَنْ تَخْرِقَ الْاَرْضَ وَلَنْ تَبْلُغَ الْجِبَالَ طُوْلًا ٣٧

walā
وَلَا
And (do) not
tamshi
تَمْشِ
walk
فِى
in
l-arḍi
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
maraḥan
مَرَحًاۖ
(with) insolence
innaka
إِنَّكَ
Indeed you
lan
لَن
will never
takhriqa
تَخْرِقَ
tear
l-arḍa
ٱلْأَرْضَ
the earth
walan
وَلَن
and will never
tablugha
تَبْلُغَ
reach
l-jibāla
ٱلْجِبَالَ
the mountains
ṭūlan
طُولًا
(in) height
And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 37)
Tafsir
38

كُلُّ ذٰلِكَ كَانَ سَيِّئُهٗ عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ مَكْرُوْهًا ٣٨

kullu
كُلُّ
All
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
that
kāna
كَانَ
is
sayyi-uhu
سَيِّئُهُۥ
[its] evil
ʿinda
عِندَ
near
rabbika
رَبِّكَ
your Lord
makrūhan
مَكْرُوهًا
hateful
All that [i.e., the aforementioned] – its evil is ever, in the sight of your Lord, detested. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 38)
Tafsir
39

ذٰلِكَ مِمَّآ اَوْحٰٓى اِلَيْكَ رَبُّكَ مِنَ الْحِكْمَةِۗ وَلَا تَجْعَلْ مَعَ اللّٰهِ اِلٰهًا اٰخَرَ فَتُلْقٰى فِيْ جَهَنَّمَ مَلُوْمًا مَّدْحُوْرًا ٣٩

dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
That
mimmā
مِمَّآ
(is) from what
awḥā
أَوْحَىٰٓ
(was) revealed
ilayka
إِلَيْكَ
to you
rabbuka
رَبُّكَ
(from) your Lord
mina
مِنَ
of
l-ḥik'mati
ٱلْحِكْمَةِۗ
the wisdom
walā
وَلَا
And (do) not
tajʿal
تَجْعَلْ
make
maʿa
مَعَ
with
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
ilāhan
إِلَٰهًا
god
ākhara
ءَاخَرَ
other
fatul'qā
فَتُلْقَىٰ
lest you should be thrown
فِى
in
jahannama
جَهَنَّمَ
Hell
malūman
مَلُومًا
blameworthy
madḥūran
مَّدْحُورًا
abandoned
That is from what your Lord has revealed to you, [O Muhammad], of wisdom. And, [O mankind], do not make [as equal] with Allah another deity, lest you be thrown into Hell, blamed and banished. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 39)
Tafsir
40

اَفَاَصْفٰىكُمْ رَبُّكُمْ بِالْبَنِيْنَ وَاتَّخَذَ مِنَ الْمَلٰۤىِٕكَةِ اِنَاثًاۗ اِنَّكُمْ لَتَقُوْلُوْنَ قَوْلًا عَظِيْمًا ࣖ ٤٠

afa-aṣfākum
أَفَأَصْفَىٰكُمْ
Then has your Lord chosen (for) you
rabbukum
رَبُّكُم
Then has your Lord chosen (for) you
bil-banīna
بِٱلْبَنِينَ
sons
wa-ittakhadha
وَٱتَّخَذَ
and He has taken
mina
مِنَ
from
l-malāikati
ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ
the Angels
ināthan
إِنَٰثًاۚ
daughters?
innakum
إِنَّكُمْ
Indeed, you
lataqūlūna
لَتَقُولُونَ
surely say
qawlan
قَوْلًا
a word
ʿaẓīman
عَظِيمًا
grave
Then, has your Lord chosen you for [having] sons and taken [i.e., adopted] from among the angels daughters? Indeed, you say a grave saying. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 40)
Tafsir
