(The Night Journey)

21

اُنْظُرْ كَيْفَ فَضَّلْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ عَلٰى بَعْضٍۗ وَلَلْاٰخِرَةُ اَكْبَرُ دَرَجٰتٍ وَّاَكْبَرُ تَفْضِيْلًا ٢١

unẓur
ٱنظُرْ
See
kayfa
كَيْفَ
how
faḍḍalnā
فَضَّلْنَا
We preferred
baʿḍahum
بَعْضَهُمْ
some of them
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
over
baʿḍin
بَعْضٍۚ
others
walalākhiratu
وَلَلْءَاخِرَةُ
And surely the Hereafter
akbaru
أَكْبَرُ
(is) greater
darajātin
دَرَجَٰتٍ
(in) degrees
wa-akbaru
وَأَكْبَرُ
and greater
tafḍīlan
تَفْضِيلًا
(in) excellence
Look how We have favored [in provision] some of them over others. But the Hereafter is greater in degrees [of difference] and greater in distinction. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 21)
Tafsir
22

لَا تَجْعَلْ مَعَ اللّٰهِ اِلٰهًا اٰخَرَ فَتَقْعُدَ مَذْمُوْمًا مَّخْذُوْلًا ࣖ ٢٢

لَّا
(Do) not
tajʿal
تَجْعَلْ
make
maʿa
مَعَ
with
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
ilāhan
إِلَٰهًا
god
ākhara
ءَاخَرَ
another
fataqʿuda
فَتَقْعُدَ
lest you will sit
madhmūman
مَذْمُومًا
disgraced
makhdhūlan
مَّخْذُولًا
forsaken
Do not make [as equal] with Allah another deity and [thereby] become censured and forsaken. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 22)
Tafsir
23

۞ وَقَضٰى رَبُّكَ اَلَّا تَعْبُدُوْٓا اِلَّآ اِيَّاهُ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ اِحْسٰنًاۗ اِمَّا يَبْلُغَنَّ عِنْدَكَ الْكِبَرَ اَحَدُهُمَآ اَوْ كِلٰهُمَا فَلَا تَقُلْ لَّهُمَآ اُفٍّ وَّلَا تَنْهَرْهُمَا وَقُلْ لَّهُمَا قَوْلًا كَرِيْمًا ٢٣

waqaḍā
وَقَضَىٰ
And has decreed
rabbuka
رَبُّكَ
your Lord
allā
أَلَّا
that (do) not
taʿbudū
تَعْبُدُوٓا۟
worship
illā
إِلَّآ
except
iyyāhu
إِيَّاهُ
Him Alone
wabil-wālidayni
وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ
and to the parents
iḥ'sānan
إِحْسَٰنًاۚ
(be) good
immā
إِمَّا
Whether
yablughanna
يَبْلُغَنَّ
reach
ʿindaka
عِندَكَ
with you
l-kibara
ٱلْكِبَرَ
the old age
aḥaduhumā
أَحَدُهُمَآ
one of them
aw
أَوْ
or
kilāhumā
كِلَاهُمَا
both of them
falā
فَلَا
then (do) not
taqul
تَقُل
say
lahumā
لَّهُمَآ
to both of them
uffin
أُفٍّ
a word of disrespect
walā
وَلَا
and (do) not
tanharhumā
تَنْهَرْهُمَا
repel them
waqul
وَقُل
but speak
lahumā
لَّهُمَا
to them
qawlan
قَوْلًا
a word
karīman
كَرِيمًا
noble
And your Lord has decreed that you worship not except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 23)
Tafsir
24

وَاخْفِضْ لَهُمَا جَنَاحَ الذُّلِّ مِنَ الرَّحْمَةِ وَقُلْ رَّبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيٰنِيْ صَغِيْرًاۗ ٢٤

wa-ikh'fiḍ
وَٱخْفِضْ
And lower
lahumā
لَهُمَا
to them
janāḥa
جَنَاحَ
(the) wing
l-dhuli
ٱلذُّلِّ
(of) humility
mina
مِنَ
(out) of
l-raḥmati
ٱلرَّحْمَةِ
[the] mercy
waqul
وَقُل
and say
rabbi
رَّبِّ
"My Lord!
ir'ḥamhumā
ٱرْحَمْهُمَا
Have mercy on both of them
kamā
كَمَا
as
rabbayānī
رَبَّيَانِى
they brought me up
ṣaghīran
صَغِيرًا
(when I was) small"
And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small." (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 24)
Tafsir
25

رَبُّكُمْ اَعْلَمُ بِمَا فِيْ نُفُوْسِكُمْ ۗاِنْ تَكُوْنُوْا صٰلِحِيْنَ فَاِنَّهٗ كَانَ لِلْاَوَّابِيْنَ غَفُوْرًا ٢٥

rabbukum
رَّبُّكُمْ
Your Lord
aʿlamu
أَعْلَمُ
(is) most knowing
bimā
بِمَا
of what
فِى
(is) in
nufūsikum
نُفُوسِكُمْۚ
yourselves
in
إِن
If
takūnū
تَكُونُوا۟
you are
ṣāliḥīna
صَٰلِحِينَ
righteous
fa-innahu
فَإِنَّهُۥ
then indeed He
kāna
كَانَ
is
lil'awwābīna
لِلْأَوَّٰبِينَ
to those who often turn (to Him)
ghafūran
غَفُورًا
Most Forgiving
Your Lord is most knowing of what is within yourselves. If you should be righteous [in intention] – then indeed He is ever, to the often returning [to Him], Forgiving. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 25)
Tafsir
26

وَاٰتِ ذَا الْقُرْبٰى حَقَّهٗ وَالْمِسْكِيْنَ وَابْنَ السَّبِيْلِ وَلَا تُبَذِّرْ تَبْذِيْرًا ٢٦

waāti
وَءَاتِ
And give
dhā
ذَا
the relatives
l-qur'bā
ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ
the relatives
ḥaqqahu
حَقَّهُۥ
his right
wal-mis'kīna
وَٱلْمِسْكِينَ
and the needy
wa-ib'na
وَٱبْنَ
and the wayfarer
l-sabīli
ٱلسَّبِيلِ
and the wayfarer
walā
وَلَا
and (do) not
tubadhir
تُبَذِّرْ
spend
tabdhīran
تَبْذِيرًا
wastefully
And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 26)
Tafsir
27

اِنَّ الْمُبَذِّرِيْنَ كَانُوْٓا اِخْوَانَ الشَّيٰطِيْنِ ۗوَكَانَ الشَّيْطٰنُ لِرَبِّهٖ كَفُوْرًا ٢٧

inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
l-mubadhirīna
ٱلْمُبَذِّرِينَ
the spendthrifts
kānū
كَانُوٓا۟
are
ikh'wāna
إِخْوَٰنَ
brothers
l-shayāṭīni
ٱلشَّيَٰطِينِۖ
(of) the devils
wakāna
وَكَانَ
And is
l-shayṭānu
ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ
the Shaitaan
lirabbihi
لِرَبِّهِۦ
to his Lord
kafūran
كَفُورًا
ungrateful
Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 27)
Tafsir
28

وَاِمَّا تُعْرِضَنَّ عَنْهُمُ ابْتِغَاۤءَ رَحْمَةٍ مِّنْ رَّبِّكَ تَرْجُوْهَا فَقُلْ لَّهُمْ قَوْلًا مَّيْسُوْرًا ٢٨

wa-immā
وَإِمَّا
And if
tuʿ'riḍanna
تُعْرِضَنَّ
you turn away
ʿanhumu
عَنْهُمُ
from them
ib'tighāa
ٱبْتِغَآءَ
seeking
raḥmatin
رَحْمَةٍ
mercy
min
مِّن
from
rabbika
رَّبِّكَ
your Lord
tarjūhā
تَرْجُوهَا
which you expect
faqul
فَقُل
then say
lahum
لَّهُمْ
to them
qawlan
قَوْلًا
a word
maysūran
مَّيْسُورًا
gentle
And if you [must] turn away from them [i.e., the needy] awaiting mercy from your Lord which you expect, then speak to them a gentle word. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 28)
Tafsir
29

وَلَا تَجْعَلْ يَدَكَ مَغْلُوْلَةً اِلٰى عُنُقِكَ وَلَا تَبْسُطْهَا كُلَّ الْبَسْطِ فَتَقْعُدَ مَلُوْمًا مَّحْسُوْرًا ٢٩

walā
وَلَا
And (do) not
tajʿal
تَجْعَلْ
make
yadaka
يَدَكَ
your hand
maghlūlatan
مَغْلُولَةً
chained
ilā
إِلَىٰ
to
ʿunuqika
عُنُقِكَ
your neck
walā
وَلَا
and not
tabsuṭ'hā
تَبْسُطْهَا
extend it
kulla
كُلَّ
(to its) utmost
l-basṭi
ٱلْبَسْطِ
reach
fataqʿuda
فَتَقْعُدَ
so that you sit
malūman
مَلُومًا
blameworthy
maḥsūran
مَّحْسُورًا
insolvent
And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 29)
Tafsir
30

اِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَبْسُطُ الرِّزْقَ لِمَنْ يَّشَاۤءُ وَيَقْدِرُ ۗاِنَّهٗ كَانَ بِعِبَادِهٖ خَبِيْرًاۢ بَصِيْرًا ࣖ ٣٠

inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
rabbaka
رَبَّكَ
your Lord
yabsuṭu
يَبْسُطُ
extends
l-riz'qa
ٱلرِّزْقَ
the provision
liman
لِمَن
for whom
yashāu
يَشَآءُ
He wills
wayaqdiru
وَيَقْدِرُۚ
and straitens
innahu
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed He
kāna
كَانَ
is
biʿibādihi
بِعِبَادِهِۦ
of His slaves
khabīran
خَبِيرًۢا
All-Aware
baṣīran
بَصِيرًا
All-Seer
Indeed, your Lord extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. Indeed He is ever, concerning His servants, Aware and Seeing. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 30)
