(The Night Journey)

11

وَيَدْعُ الْاِنْسَانُ بِالشَّرِّ دُعَاۤءَهٗ بِالْخَيْرِۗ وَكَانَ الْاِنْسَانُ عَجُوْلًا ١١

wayadʿu
وَيَدْعُ
And prays
l-insānu
ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ
the man
bil-shari
بِٱلشَّرِّ
for evil
duʿāahu
دُعَآءَهُۥ
(as) he prays
bil-khayri
بِٱلْخَيْرِۖ
for the good
wakāna
وَكَانَ
And is
l-insānu
ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ
the man
ʿajūlan
عَجُولًا
ever hasty
And man supplicates for evil [when angry] as he supplicates for good, and man is ever hasty. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 11)
Tafsir
12

وَجَعَلْنَا الَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ اٰيَتَيْنِ فَمَحَوْنَآ اٰيَةَ الَّيْلِ وَجَعَلْنَآ اٰيَةَ النَّهَارِ مُبْصِرَةً لِّتَبْتَغُوْا فَضْلًا مِّنْ رَّبِّكُمْ وَلِتَعْلَمُوْا عَدَدَ السِّنِيْنَ وَالْحِسَابَۗ وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ فَصَّلْنٰهُ تَفْصِيْلًا ١٢

wajaʿalnā
وَجَعَلْنَا
And We have made
al-layla
ٱلَّيْلَ
the night
wal-nahāra
وَٱلنَّهَارَ
and the day
āyatayni
ءَايَتَيْنِۖ
(as) two signs
famaḥawnā
فَمَحَوْنَآ
Then We erased
āyata
ءَايَةَ
(the) sign
al-layli
ٱلَّيْلِ
(of) the night
wajaʿalnā
وَجَعَلْنَآ
and We made
āyata
ءَايَةَ
(the) sign
l-nahāri
ٱلنَّهَارِ
(of) the day
mub'ṣiratan
مُبْصِرَةً
visible
litabtaghū
لِّتَبْتَغُوا۟
that you may seek
faḍlan
فَضْلًا
bounty
min
مِّن
from
rabbikum
رَّبِّكُمْ
your Lord
walitaʿlamū
وَلِتَعْلَمُوا۟
and that you may know
ʿadada
عَدَدَ
(the) number
l-sinīna
ٱلسِّنِينَ
(of) the years
wal-ḥisāba
وَٱلْحِسَابَۚ
and the account
wakulla
وَكُلَّ
And every
shayin
شَىْءٍ
thing -
faṣṣalnāhu
فَصَّلْنَٰهُ
We have explained it
tafṣīlan
تَفْصِيلًا
(in) detail
And We have made the night and day two signs, and We erased the sign of the night and made the sign of the day visible that you may seek bounty from your Lord and may know the number of years and the account [of time]. And everything We have set out in detail. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 12)
Tafsir
13

وَكُلَّ اِنْسَانٍ اَلْزَمْنٰهُ طٰۤىِٕرَهٗ فِيْ عُنُقِهٖۗ وَنُخْرِجُ لَهٗ يَوْمَ الْقِيٰمَةِ كِتٰبًا يَّلْقٰىهُ مَنْشُوْرًا ١٣

wakulla
وَكُلَّ
And (for) every
insānin
إِنسَٰنٍ
man
alzamnāhu
أَلْزَمْنَٰهُ
We have fastened to him
ṭāirahu
طَٰٓئِرَهُۥ
his fate
فِى
in
ʿunuqihi
عُنُقِهِۦۖ
his neck
wanukh'riju
وَنُخْرِجُ
and We will bring forth
lahu
لَهُۥ
for him
yawma
يَوْمَ
(on the) Day
l-qiyāmati
ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ
(of) the Resurrection
kitāban
كِتَٰبًا
a record
yalqāhu
يَلْقَىٰهُ
which he will find
manshūran
مَنشُورًا
wide open
And [for] every person We have imposed his fate upon his neck, and We will produce for him on the Day of Resurrection a record which he will encounter spread open. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 13)
Tafsir
14

اِقْرَأْ كِتَابَكَۗ كَفٰى بِنَفْسِكَ الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكَ حَسِيْبًاۗ ١٤

iq'ra
ٱقْرَأْ
"Read
kitābaka
كِتَٰبَكَ
your record
kafā
كَفَىٰ
Sufficient
binafsika
بِنَفْسِكَ
(is) yourself
l-yawma
ٱلْيَوْمَ
today
ʿalayka
عَلَيْكَ
against you
ḥasīban
حَسِيبًا
(as) accountant"
[It will be said], "Read your record. Sufficient is yourself against you this Day as accountant." (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 14)
Tafsir
15

مَنِ اهْتَدٰى فَاِنَّمَا يَهْتَدِيْ لِنَفْسِهٖۚ وَمَنْ ضَلَّ فَاِنَّمَا يَضِلُّ عَلَيْهَاۗ وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِّزْرَ اُخْرٰىۗ وَمَا كُنَّا مُعَذِّبِيْنَ حَتّٰى نَبْعَثَ رَسُوْلًا ١٥

mani
مَّنِ
Whoever
ih'tadā
ٱهْتَدَىٰ
(is) guided
fa-innamā
فَإِنَّمَا
then only
yahtadī
يَهْتَدِى
he is guided
linafsihi
لِنَفْسِهِۦۖ
for his soul
waman
وَمَن
And whoever
ḍalla
ضَلَّ
goes astray
fa-innamā
فَإِنَّمَا
then only
yaḍillu
يَضِلُّ
he goes astray
ʿalayhā
عَلَيْهَاۚ
against it
walā
وَلَا
And not
taziru
تَزِرُ
will bear
wāziratun
وَازِرَةٌ
one laden with burden
wiz'ra
وِزْرَ
burden
ukh'rā
أُخْرَىٰۗ
(of) another
wamā
وَمَا
And not
kunnā
كُنَّا
We
muʿadhibīna
مُعَذِّبِينَ
are to punish
ḥattā
حَتَّىٰ
until
nabʿatha
نَبْعَثَ
We have sent
rasūlan
رَسُولًا
a Messenger
Whoever is guided is only guided for [the benefit of] his soul. And whoever errs only errs against it. And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. And never would We punish until We sent a messenger. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 15)
Tafsir
16

وَاِذَآ اَرَدْنَآ اَنْ نُّهْلِكَ قَرْيَةً اَمَرْنَا مُتْرَفِيْهَا فَفَسَقُوْا فِيْهَا فَحَقَّ عَلَيْهَا الْقَوْلُ فَدَمَّرْنٰهَا تَدْمِيْرًا ١٦

wa-idhā
وَإِذَآ
And when
aradnā
أَرَدْنَآ
We intend
an
أَن
that
nuh'lika
نُّهْلِكَ
We destroy
qaryatan
قَرْيَةً
a town
amarnā
أَمَرْنَا
We order
mut'rafīhā
مُتْرَفِيهَا
its wealthy people
fafasaqū
فَفَسَقُوا۟
but they defiantly disobey
fīhā
فِيهَا
therein;
faḥaqqa
فَحَقَّ
so (is) proved true
ʿalayhā
عَلَيْهَا
against it
l-qawlu
ٱلْقَوْلُ
the word
fadammarnāhā
فَدَمَّرْنَٰهَا
and We destroy it
tadmīran
تَدْمِيرًا
(with) destruction
And when We intend to destroy a city, We command its affluent but they defiantly disobey therein; so the word [i.e., deserved decree] comes into effect upon it, and We destroy it with [complete] destruction. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 16)
Tafsir
17

وَكَمْ اَهْلَكْنَا مِنَ الْقُرُوْنِ مِنْۢ بَعْدِ نُوْحٍۗ وَكَفٰى بِرَبِّكَ بِذُنُوْبِ عِبَادِهٖ خَبِيْرًاۢ بَصِيْرًا ١٧

wakam
وَكَمْ
And how many
ahlaknā
أَهْلَكْنَا
We destroyed
mina
مِنَ
from
l-qurūni
ٱلْقُرُونِ
the generations
min
مِنۢ
after
baʿdi
بَعْدِ
after
nūḥin
نُوحٍۗ
Nuh!
wakafā
وَكَفَىٰ
And sufficient
birabbika
بِرَبِّكَ
(is) your Lord
bidhunūbi
بِذُنُوبِ
concerning the sins
ʿibādihi
عِبَادِهِۦ
(of) His servants
khabīran
خَبِيرًۢا
All-Aware
baṣīran
بَصِيرًا
All-Seer
And how many have We destroyed from the generations after Noah. And sufficient is your Lord, concerning the sins of His servants, as Aware and Seeing. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 17)
Tafsir
18

مَنْ كَانَ يُرِيْدُ الْعَاجِلَةَ عَجَّلْنَا لَهٗ فِيْهَا مَا نَشَاۤءُ لِمَنْ نُّرِيْدُ ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَا لَهٗ جَهَنَّمَۚ يَصْلٰىهَا مَذْمُوْمًا مَّدْحُوْرًا ١٨

man
مَّن
Whoever
kāna
كَانَ
should
yurīdu
يُرِيدُ
desire
l-ʿājilata
ٱلْعَاجِلَةَ
the immediate
ʿajjalnā
عَجَّلْنَا
We hasten
lahu
لَهُۥ
for him
fīhā
فِيهَا
in it
مَا
what
nashāu
نَشَآءُ
We will
liman
لِمَن
to whom
nurīdu
نُّرِيدُ
We intend
thumma
ثُمَّ
Then
jaʿalnā
جَعَلْنَا
We have made
lahu
لَهُۥ
for him
jahannama
جَهَنَّمَ
Hell
yaṣlāhā
يَصْلَىٰهَا
he will burn
madhmūman
مَذْمُومًا
disgraced
madḥūran
مَّدْحُورًا
rejected
Whoever should desire the immediate – We hasten for him from it what We will to whom We intend. Then We have made for him Hell, which he will [enter to] burn, censured and banished. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 18)
Tafsir
19

وَمَنْ اَرَادَ الْاٰخِرَةَ وَسَعٰى لَهَا سَعْيَهَا وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَاُولٰۤىِٕكَ كَانَ سَعْيُهُمْ مَّشْكُوْرًا ١٩

waman
وَمَنْ
And whoever
arāda
أَرَادَ
desires
l-ākhirata
ٱلْءَاخِرَةَ
the Hereafter
wasaʿā
وَسَعَىٰ
and exerts
lahā
لَهَا
for it
saʿyahā
سَعْيَهَا
the effort
wahuwa
وَهُوَ
while he
mu'minun
مُؤْمِنٌ
(is) a believer
fa-ulāika
فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ
then those
kāna
كَانَ
[are]
saʿyuhum
سَعْيُهُم
their effort
mashkūran
مَّشْكُورًا
(is) appreciated
But whoever desires the Hereafter and exerts the effort due to it while he is a believer – it is those whose effort is ever appreciated [by Allah]. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 19)
Tafsir
20

كُلًّا نُّمِدُّ هٰٓؤُلَاۤءِ وَهٰٓؤُلَاۤءِ مِنْ عَطَاۤءِ رَبِّكَ ۗوَمَا كَانَ عَطَاۤءُ رَبِّكَ مَحْظُوْرًا ٢٠

(To) each
numiddu
نُّمِدُّ
We extend
hāulāi
هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ
(to) these
wahāulāi
وَهَٰٓؤُلَآءِ
and (to) these
min
مِنْ
from
ʿaṭāi
عَطَآءِ
(the) gift
rabbika
رَبِّكَۚ
(of) your Lord
wamā
وَمَا
And not
kāna
كَانَ
is
ʿaṭāu
عَطَآءُ
(the) gift
rabbika
رَبِّكَ
(of) your Lord
maḥẓūran
مَحْظُورًا
restricted
To each [category] We extend – to these and to those – from the gift of your Lord. And never has the gift of your Lord been restricted. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 20)
