(The Night Journey)

101

وَلَقَدْ اٰتَيْنَا مُوْسٰى تِسْعَ اٰيٰتٍۢ بَيِّنٰتٍ فَسْـَٔلْ بَنِيْٓ اِسْرَاۤءِيْلَ اِذْ جَاۤءَهُمْ فَقَالَ لَهٗ فِرْعَوْنُ اِنِّيْ لَاَظُنُّكَ يٰمُوْسٰى مَسْحُوْرًا ١٠١

walaqad
وَلَقَدْ
And certainly
ātaynā
ءَاتَيْنَا
We had given
mūsā
مُوسَىٰ
Musa
tis'ʿa
تِسْعَ
nine
āyātin
ءَايَٰتٍۭ
Signs
bayyinātin
بَيِّنَٰتٍۖ
clear
fasal
فَسْـَٔلْ
so ask
banī
بَنِىٓ
(the) Children of Israel
is'rāīla
إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ
(the) Children of Israel
idh
إِذْ
when
jāahum
جَآءَهُمْ
he came to them
faqāla
فَقَالَ
then said
lahu
لَهُۥ
to him
fir'ʿawnu
فِرْعَوْنُ
Firaun
innī
إِنِّى
"Indeed, I
la-aẓunnuka
لَأَظُنُّكَ
[I] think you
yāmūsā
يَٰمُوسَىٰ
O Musa!
masḥūran
مَسْحُورًا
(you are) bewitched"
And We had certainly given Moses nine evident signs, so ask the Children of Israel [about] when he came to them and Pharaoh said to him, "Indeed I think, O Moses, that you are affected by magic." (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 101)
Tafsir
102

قَالَ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ مَآ اَنْزَلَ هٰٓؤُلَاۤءِ اِلَّا رَبُّ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِ بَصَاۤىِٕرَۚ وَاِنِّيْ لَاَظُنُّكَ يٰفِرْعَوْنُ مَثْبُوْرًا ١٠٢

qāla
قَالَ
He said
laqad
لَقَدْ
"Verily
ʿalim'ta
عَلِمْتَ
you know
مَآ
none
anzala
أَنزَلَ
has sent down
hāulāi
هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ
these
illā
إِلَّا
except
rabbu
رَبُّ
(the) Lord
l-samāwāti
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
(of) the heavens
wal-arḍi
وَٱلْأَرْضِ
and the earth
baṣāira
بَصَآئِرَ
(as) evidence
wa-innī
وَإِنِّى
and indeed I
la-aẓunnuka
لَأَظُنُّكَ
[I] surely think you
yāfir'ʿawnu
يَٰفِرْعَوْنُ
O Firaun!
mathbūran
مَثْبُورًا
(you are) destroyed"
[Moses] said, "You have already known that none has sent down these [signs] except the Lord of the heavens and the earth as evidence, and indeed I think, O Pharaoh, that you are destroyed." (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 102)
Tafsir
103

فَاَرَادَ اَنْ يَّسْتَفِزَّهُمْ مِّنَ الْاَرْضِ فَاَغْرَقْنٰهُ وَمَنْ مَّعَهٗ جَمِيْعًاۙ ١٠٣

fa-arāda
فَأَرَادَ
So he intended
an
أَن
to
yastafizzahum
يَسْتَفِزَّهُم
drive them out
mina
مِّنَ
from
l-arḍi
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the land
fa-aghraqnāhu
فَأَغْرَقْنَٰهُ
but We drowned him
waman
وَمَن
and who
maʿahu
مَّعَهُۥ
(were) with him
jamīʿan
جَمِيعًا
all
So he intended to drive them from the land, but We drowned him and those with him all together. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 103)
Tafsir
104

وَّقُلْنَا مِنْۢ بَعْدِهٖ لِبَنِيْٓ اِسْرَاۤءِيْلَ اسْكُنُوا الْاَرْضَ فَاِذَا جَاۤءَ وَعْدُ الْاٰخِرَةِ جِئْنَا بِكُمْ لَفِيْفًاۗ ١٠٤

waqul'nā
وَقُلْنَا
And We said
min
مِنۢ
after him
baʿdihi
بَعْدِهِۦ
after him
libanī
لِبَنِىٓ
to the Children of Israel
is'rāīla
إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ
to the Children of Israel
us'kunū
ٱسْكُنُوا۟
"Dwell
l-arḍa
ٱلْأَرْضَ
(in) the land
fa-idhā
فَإِذَا
then when
jāa
جَآءَ
comes
waʿdu
وَعْدُ
(the) promise
l-ākhirati
ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ
(of) the Hereafter
ji'nā
جِئْنَا
We will bring
bikum
بِكُمْ
you
lafīfan
لَفِيفًا
(as) a mixed crowd"
And We said after him [i.e., Pharaoh] to the Children of Israel, "Dwell in the land, and when there comes the promise [i.e., appointment] of the Hereafter, We will bring you forth in [one] gathering." (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 104)
Tafsir
105

وَبِالْحَقِّ اَنْزَلْنٰهُ وَبِالْحَقِّ نَزَلَۗ وَمَآ اَرْسَلْنٰكَ اِلَّا مُبَشِّرًا وَّنَذِيْرًاۘ ١٠٥

wabil-ḥaqi
وَبِٱلْحَقِّ
And with the truth
anzalnāhu
أَنزَلْنَٰهُ
We sent it down
wabil-ḥaqi
وَبِٱلْحَقِّ
and with the truth
nazala
نَزَلَۗ
it descended
wamā
وَمَآ
And not
arsalnāka
أَرْسَلْنَٰكَ
We sent you
illā
إِلَّا
except
mubashiran
مُبَشِّرًا
(as) a bearer of glad tidings
wanadhīran
وَنَذِيرًا
and a warner
And with the truth We have sent it [i.e., the Quran] down, and with the truth it has descended. And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 105)
Tafsir
106

وَقُرْاٰنًا فَرَقْنٰهُ لِتَقْرَاَهٗ عَلَى النَّاسِ عَلٰى مُكْثٍ وَّنَزَّلْنٰهُ تَنْزِيْلًا ١٠٦

waqur'ānan
وَقُرْءَانًا
And the Quran
faraqnāhu
فَرَقْنَٰهُ
We have divided
litaqra-ahu
لِتَقْرَأَهُۥ
that you might recite it
ʿalā
عَلَى
to
l-nāsi
ٱلنَّاسِ
the people
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
at
muk'thin
مُكْثٍ
intervals
wanazzalnāhu
وَنَزَّلْنَٰهُ
And We have revealed it
tanzīlan
تَنزِيلًا
(in) stages
And [it is] a Quran which We have separated [by intervals] that you might recite it to the people over a prolonged period. And We have sent it down progressively. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 106)
Tafsir
107

قُلْ اٰمِنُوْا بِهٖٓ اَوْ لَا تُؤْمِنُوْاۗ اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ اُوْتُوا الْعِلْمَ مِنْ قَبْلِهٖٓ اِذَا يُتْلٰى عَلَيْهِمْ يَخِرُّوْنَ لِلْاَذْقَانِ سُجَّدًاۙ ١٠٧

qul
قُلْ
Say
āminū
ءَامِنُوا۟
"Believe
bihi
بِهِۦٓ
in it
aw
أَوْ
or
لَا
(do) not
tu'minū
تُؤْمِنُوٓا۟ۚ
believe
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
ūtū
أُوتُوا۟
were given
l-ʿil'ma
ٱلْعِلْمَ
the knowledge
min
مِن
before it
qablihi
قَبْلِهِۦٓ
before it
idhā
إِذَا
when
yut'lā
يُتْلَىٰ
it is recited
ʿalayhim
عَلَيْهِمْ
to them
yakhirrūna
يَخِرُّونَ
they fall
lil'adhqāni
لِلْأَذْقَانِ
on their faces
sujjadan
سُجَّدًا
(in) prostration"
Say, "Believe in it or do not believe." Indeed, those who were given knowledge before it – when it is recited to them, they fall upon their faces in prostration, (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 107)
Tafsir
108

وَّيَقُوْلُوْنَ سُبْحٰنَ رَبِّنَآ اِنْ كَانَ وَعْدُ رَبِّنَا لَمَفْعُوْلًا ١٠٨

wayaqūlūna
وَيَقُولُونَ
And they say
sub'ḥāna
سُبْحَٰنَ
"Glory be to
rabbinā
رَبِّنَآ
our Lord!
in
إِن
Indeed
kāna
كَانَ
is
waʿdu
وَعْدُ
(the) promise
rabbinā
رَبِّنَا
(of) our Lord
lamafʿūlan
لَمَفْعُولًا
surely fulfilled"
And they say, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, the promise of our Lord has been fulfilled." (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 108)
Tafsir
109

وَيَخِرُّوْنَ لِلْاَذْقَانِ يَبْكُوْنَ وَيَزِيْدُهُمْ خُشُوْعًا ۩ ١٠٩

wayakhirrūna
وَيَخِرُّونَ
And they fall
lil'adhqāni
لِلْأَذْقَانِ
on their faces
yabkūna
يَبْكُونَ
weeping
wayazīduhum
وَيَزِيدُهُمْ
and it increases them
khushūʿan
خُشُوعًا۩
(in) humility
And they fall upon their faces weeping, and it [i.e., the Quran] increases them in humble submission. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 109)
Tafsir
110

قُلِ ادْعُوا اللّٰهَ اَوِ ادْعُوا الرَّحْمٰنَۗ اَيًّا مَّا تَدْعُوْا فَلَهُ الْاَسْمَاۤءُ الْحُسْنٰىۚ وَلَا تَجْهَرْ بِصَلَاتِكَ وَلَا تُخَافِتْ بِهَا وَابْتَغِ بَيْنَ ذٰلِكَ سَبِيْلًا ١١٠

quli
قُلِ
Say
id'ʿū
ٱدْعُوا۟
"Invoke
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
awi
أَوِ
or
id'ʿū
ٱدْعُوا۟
invoke
l-raḥmāna
ٱلرَّحْمَٰنَۖ
the Most Gracious
ayyan
أَيًّا
By whatever (name)
مَّا
By whatever (name)
tadʿū
تَدْعُوا۟
you invoke
falahu
فَلَهُ
to Him (belongs)
l-asmāu
ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ
the Most Beautiful Names
l-ḥus'nā
ٱلْحُسْنَىٰۚ
the Most Beautiful Names
walā
وَلَا
And (do) not
tajhar
تَجْهَرْ
be loud
biṣalātika
بِصَلَاتِكَ
in your prayers
walā
وَلَا
and not
tukhāfit
تُخَافِتْ
be silent
bihā
بِهَا
therein
wa-ib'taghi
وَٱبْتَغِ
but seek
bayna
بَيْنَ
between
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
that
sabīlan
سَبِيلًا
a way"
Say, "Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful [ar-Rahman]. Whichever [name] you call – to Him belong the best names." And do not recite [too] loudly in your prayer or [too] quietly but seek between that an [intermediate] way. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 110)
