Surah Al-Isra - Word by Word

(The Night Journey)

bismillaahirrahmaanirrahiim
1

سُبْحٰنَ الَّذِيْٓ اَسْرٰى بِعَبْدِهٖ لَيْلًا مِّنَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ اِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ الْاَقْصَا الَّذِيْ بٰرَكْنَا حَوْلَهٗ لِنُرِيَهٗ مِنْ اٰيٰتِنَاۗ اِنَّهٗ هُوَ السَّمِيْعُ الْبَصِيْرُ ١

sub'ḥāna
سُبْحَٰنَ
Exalted
alladhī
ٱلَّذِىٓ
(is) the One Who
asrā
أَسْرَىٰ
took
biʿabdihi
بِعَبْدِهِۦ
His servant
laylan
لَيْلًا
(by) night
mina
مِّنَ
from
l-masjidi
ٱلْمَسْجِدِ
Al-Masjid Al-Haraam
l-ḥarāmi
ٱلْحَرَامِ
Al-Masjid Al-Haraam
ilā
إِلَى
to
l-masjidi
ٱلْمَسْجِدِ
Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa
l-aqṣā
ٱلْأَقْصَا
Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa
alladhī
ٱلَّذِى
which
bāraknā
بَٰرَكْنَا
We blessed
ḥawlahu
حَوْلَهُۥ
its surroundings
linuriyahu
لِنُرِيَهُۥ
that We may show him
min
مِنْ
of
āyātinā
ءَايَٰتِنَآۚ
Our Signs
innahu
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed He
huwa
هُوَ
He
l-samīʿu
ٱلسَّمِيعُ
(is) the All-Hearer
l-baṣīru
ٱلْبَصِيرُ
the All-Seer
Exalted is He who took His Servant [i.e., Prophet Muhammad] by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 1)
Tafsir
2

وَاٰتَيْنَا مُوْسَى الْكِتٰبَ وَجَعَلْنٰهُ هُدًى لِّبَنِيْٓ اِسْرَاۤءِيْلَ اَلَّا تَتَّخِذُوْا مِنْ دُوْنِيْ وَكِيْلًاۗ ٢

waātaynā
وَءَاتَيْنَا
And We gave
mūsā
مُوسَى
Musa
l-kitāba
ٱلْكِتَٰبَ
the Book
wajaʿalnāhu
وَجَعَلْنَٰهُ
and made it
hudan
هُدًى
a guidance
libanī
لِّبَنِىٓ
for the Children
is'rāīla
إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ
(of) Israel
allā
أَلَّا
"That not
tattakhidhū
تَتَّخِذُوا۟
you take
min
مِن
other than Me
dūnī
دُونِى
other than Me
wakīlan
وَكِيلًا
(as) a Disposer of affairs"
And We gave Moses the Scripture and made it a guidance for the Children of Israel that you not take other than Me as Disposer of affairs, (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 2)
Tafsir
3

ذُرِّيَّةَ مَنْ حَمَلْنَا مَعَ نُوْحٍۗ اِنَّهٗ كَانَ عَبْدًا شَكُوْرًا ٣

dhurriyyata
ذُرِّيَّةَ
Offsprings
man
مَنْ
(of one) who
ḥamalnā
حَمَلْنَا
We carried
maʿa
مَعَ
with
nūḥin
نُوحٍۚ
Nuh
innahu
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed he
kāna
كَانَ
was
ʿabdan
عَبْدًا
a servant
shakūran
شَكُورًا
grateful
O descendants of those We carried [in the ship] with Noah. Indeed, he was a grateful servant. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 3)
Tafsir

وَقَضَيْنَآ اِلٰى بَنِيْٓ اِسْرَاۤءِيْلَ فِى الْكِتٰبِ لَتُفْسِدُنَّ فِى الْاَرْضِ مَرَّتَيْنِ وَلَتَعْلُنَّ عُلُوًّا كَبِيْرًا ٤

waqaḍaynā
وَقَضَيْنَآ
And We decreed
ilā
إِلَىٰ
for
banī
بَنِىٓ
(the) Children
is'rāīla
إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ
(of) Israel
فِى
in
l-kitābi
ٱلْكِتَٰبِ
the Book
latuf'sidunna
لَتُفْسِدُنَّ
"Surely you will cause corruption
فِى
in
l-arḍi
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
marratayni
مَرَّتَيْنِ
twice
walataʿlunna
وَلَتَعْلُنَّ
and surely you will reach
ʿuluwwan
عُلُوًّا
haughtiness
kabīran
كَبِيرًا
great"
And We conveyed to the Children of Israel in the Scripture that, "You will surely cause corruption on the earth twice, and you will surely reach [a degree of] great haughtiness." (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 4)
Tafsir
5

فَاِذَا جَاۤءَ وَعْدُ اُوْلٰىهُمَا بَعَثْنَا عَلَيْكُمْ عِبَادًا لَّنَآ اُولِيْ بَأْسٍ شَدِيْدٍ فَجَاسُوْا خِلٰلَ الدِّيَارِۗ وَكَانَ وَعْدًا مَّفْعُوْلًا ٥

fa-idhā
فَإِذَا
So when
jāa
جَآءَ
came
waʿdu
وَعْدُ
(the) promise
ūlāhumā
أُولَىٰهُمَا
(for) the first of the two
baʿathnā
بَعَثْنَا
We raised
ʿalaykum
عَلَيْكُمْ
against you
ʿibādan
عِبَادًا
servants
lanā
لَّنَآ
of Ours
ulī
أُو۟لِى
those of great military might
basin
بَأْسٍ
those of great military might
shadīdin
شَدِيدٍ
those of great military might
fajāsū
فَجَاسُوا۟
and they entered
khilāla
خِلَٰلَ
the inner most part
l-diyāri
ٱلدِّيَارِۚ
(of) the homes
wakāna
وَكَانَ
and (it) was
waʿdan
وَعْدًا
a promise
mafʿūlan
مَّفْعُولًا
fulfilled
So when the [time of] promise came for the first of them, We sent against you servants of Ours – those of great military might, and they probed [even] into the homes, and it was a promise fulfilled. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 5)
Tafsir
6

ثُمَّ رَدَدْنَا لَكُمُ الْكَرَّةَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَاَمْدَدْنٰكُمْ بِاَمْوَالٍ وَّبَنِيْنَ وَجَعَلْنٰكُمْ اَكْثَرَ نَفِيْرًا ٦

ثُمَّ
Then
radadnā
رَدَدْنَا
We gave back
lakumu
لَكُمُ
to you
l-karata
ٱلْكَرَّةَ
the return victory
ʿalayhim
عَلَيْهِمْ
over them
wa-amdadnākum
وَأَمْدَدْنَٰكُم
And We reinforced you
bi-amwālin
بِأَمْوَٰلٍ
with the wealth
wabanīna
وَبَنِينَ
and sons
wajaʿalnākum
وَجَعَلْنَٰكُمْ
and made you
akthara
أَكْثَرَ
more
nafīran
نَفِيرًا
numerous
Then We gave back to you a return victory over them. And We reinforced you with wealth and sons and made you more numerous in manpower. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 6)

اِنْ اَحْسَنْتُمْ اَحْسَنْتُمْ لِاَنْفُسِكُمْ ۗوَاِنْ اَسَأْتُمْ فَلَهَاۗ فَاِذَا جَاۤءَ وَعْدُ الْاٰخِرَةِ لِيَسٗۤـُٔوْا وُجُوْهَكُمْ وَلِيَدْخُلُوا الْمَسْجِدَ كَمَا دَخَلُوْهُ اَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ وَّلِيُتَبِّرُوْا مَا عَلَوْا تَتْبِيْرًا ٧

in
إِنْ
If
aḥsantum
أَحْسَنتُمْ
you do good
aḥsantum
أَحْسَنتُمْ
you do good
li-anfusikum
لِأَنفُسِكُمْۖ
for yourselves;
wa-in
وَإِنْ
and if
asatum
أَسَأْتُمْ
you do evil
falahā
فَلَهَاۚ
then it is for it
fa-idhā
فَإِذَا
So when
jāa
جَآءَ
came
waʿdu
وَعْدُ
promise
l-ākhirati
ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ
the last
liyasūū
لِيَسُۥٓـُٔوا۟
to sadden
wujūhakum
وُجُوهَكُمْ
your faces
waliyadkhulū
وَلِيَدْخُلُوا۟
and to enter
l-masjida
ٱلْمَسْجِدَ
the Masjid
kamā
كَمَا
just as
dakhalūhu
دَخَلُوهُ
they (had) entered it
awwala
أَوَّلَ
first
marratin
مَرَّةٍ
time
waliyutabbirū
وَلِيُتَبِّرُوا۟
and to destroy
مَا
what
ʿalaw
عَلَوْا۟
they had conquered
tatbīran
تَتْبِيرًا
(with) destruction
[And said], "If you do good, you do good for yourselves; and if you do evil, [you do it] to them [i.e., yourselves]." Then when the final [i.e., second] promise came, [We sent your enemies] to sadden your faces and to enter the masjid [i.e., the temple in Jerusalem], as they entered it the first time, and to destroy what they had taken over with [total] destruction. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 7)
Tafsir
8

عَسٰى رَبُّكُمْ اَنْ يَّرْحَمَكُمْۚ وَاِنْ عُدْتُّمْ عُدْنَاۘ وَجَعَلْنَا جَهَنَّمَ لِلْكٰفِرِيْنَ حَصِيْرًا ٨

ʿasā
عَسَىٰ
"(It) may be
rabbukum
رَبُّكُمْ
that your Lord
an
أَن
that your Lord
yarḥamakum
يَرْحَمَكُمْۚ
(may) have mercy upon you
wa-in
وَإِنْ
But if
ʿudttum
عُدتُّمْ
you return
ʿud'nā
عُدْنَاۘ
We will return
wajaʿalnā
وَجَعَلْنَا
And We have made
jahannama
جَهَنَّمَ
Hell
lil'kāfirīna
لِلْكَٰفِرِينَ
for the disbelievers
ḥaṣīran
حَصِيرًا
a prison-bed"
[Then Allah said], "It is expected, [if you repent], that your Lord will have mercy upon you. But if you return [to sin], We will return [to punishment]. And We have made Hell, for the disbelievers, a prison-bed." (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 8)
Tafsir
9

اِنَّ هٰذَا الْقُرْاٰنَ يَهْدِيْ لِلَّتِيْ هِيَ اَقْوَمُ وَيُبَشِّرُ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ الَّذِيْنَ يَعْمَلُوْنَ الصّٰلِحٰتِ اَنَّ لَهُمْ اَجْرًا كَبِيْرًاۙ ٩

inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
hādhā
هَٰذَا
this
l-qur'āna
ٱلْقُرْءَانَ
the Quran
yahdī
يَهْدِى
guides
lillatī
لِلَّتِى
to that
hiya
هِىَ
which
aqwamu
أَقْوَمُ
(is) most straight
wayubashiru
وَيُبَشِّرُ
and gives glad tidings
l-mu'minīna
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
to the believers -
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
yaʿmalūna
يَعْمَلُونَ
do
l-ṣāliḥāti
ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ
the righteous deeds
anna
أَنَّ
that
lahum
لَهُمْ
for them
ajran
أَجْرًا
(is) a reward
kabīran
كَبِيرًا
great
Indeed, this Quran guides to that which is most suitable and gives good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 9)
Tafsir
10

وَّاَنَّ الَّذِيْنَ لَا يُؤْمِنُوْنَ بِالْاٰخِرَةِ اَعْتَدْنَا لَهُمْ عَذَابًا اَلِيْمًا ࣖ ١٠

wa-anna
وَأَنَّ
And that
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
لَا
(do) not
yu'minūna
يُؤْمِنُونَ
believe
bil-ākhirati
بِٱلْءَاخِرَةِ
in the Hereafter
aʿtadnā
أَعْتَدْنَا
We have prepared
lahum
لَهُمْ
for them
ʿadhāban
عَذَابًا
a punishment
alīman
أَلِيمًا
painful
And that those who do not believe in the Hereafter – We have prepared for them a painful punishment. (QS. [17] Al-Isra: 10)
Tafsir
