Al-Qur'an Surah An-Nahl Verse 53

An-Nahl [16]: 53 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَمَا بِكُمْ مِّنْ نِّعْمَةٍ فَمِنَ اللّٰهِ ثُمَّ اِذَا مَسَّكُمُ الضُّرُّ فَاِلَيْهِ تَجْـَٔرُوْنَۚ (النحل : ١٦)

Transliteration:

Wa maa bikum minni'matin faminal laahi summa izaa massakumud durru fa ilaihi taj'aroon (QS. an-Naḥl:53)

English / Sahih Translation:

And whatever you have of favor – it is from Allah. Then when adversity touches you, to Him you cry for help. (QS. An-Nahl, ayah 53)

Whatever blessing you have is from Allah. Then, once you are touched by distress, to Him alone you cry for help.

English Literal

And what (is) with you from a blessing/goodness , so (it) is from God, then if the harm touched you, so to Him you pray/cry aloud and humbly.

Whatever blessing you have is from God. And when harm touches you, it is to Him that you groan.

Tafsir jalalayn

Whatever grace you have, it is from God, none but He brings it (m, `whatever', is either a conditional or relative [particle]). Then when misfortune, poverty or illness, befalls you, to Him you cry for help, [to Him] you raise your voices with pleas for help and supplications, and you do not call upon any other than Him.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَمَا بِكُم مِّن نِّعْمَةٍ فَمِنَ اللّهِ

And whatever of blessings and good things you have, it is from Allah.

Allah tells us that He is the One Who has the power to benefit and harm, and that the provisions, blessings, good health and help, His servants enjoy are from His bounty and graciousness towards them.

ثُمَّ إِذَا مَسَّكُمُ الضُّرُّ فَإِلَيْهِ تَجْأَرُونَ



Then, when harm touches you, to Him you cry aloud for help.

meaning because you know that none has the power to remove that harm except for Him, so when you are harmed, you turn to ask Him for help and beg Him for aid.

As Allah says;

وَإِذَا مَسَّكُمُ الْضُّرُّ فِى الْبَحْرِ ضَلَّ مَن تَدْعُونَ إِلَا إِيَّاهُ فَلَمَّا نَجَّـكُمْ إِلَى الْبَرِّ أَعْرَضْتُمْ وَكَانَ الاِنْسَـنُ كَفُورًا

And when harm touches you at sea, those that you call upon vanish, except for Him. But when He brings you safe to land, you turn away. And man is ever ungrateful. (17;67)

Here, Allah tells us;

ثُمَّ إِذَا كَشَفَ الضُّرَّ عَنكُمْ إِذَا فَرِيقٌ مِّنكُم بِرَبِّهِمْ يُشْرِكُونَ
