Al-Qur'an Surah An-Nahl Verse 123

Mufti Taqi Usmani

Then, We revealed to you, “Follow the way of Ibrāhīm, the upright, and he was not among the Mushriks”.

Then We revealed to you ˹O Prophet, saying˺: “Follow the faith of Abraham, the upright, who was not one of the polytheists.”

Then We revealed to you [O Prophet] to follow the religion of Abraham, inclining to true faith, and he was not one of those who associate partners with Allah.

Again, (Prophet! to complete Our favours on Abraham) We have revealed to you (saying), `Follow the creed of Abraham (who was an) upright, (devotee of God) and was not of the polytheists.´

English Literal

Then We inspired/transmitted to you that follow Abraham`s religion/faith, (he was) a submitter/Moslem/Unifier of God and (he) was not from the sharers/takers of partners (with God).

Then We revealed Our will to you [O Muhammad], saying, "Follow the religion of Abraham, the upright in faith; he was not one of the polytheists."

Then We inspired you: “Follow the religion of Abraham, the Monotheist. He was not an idol-worshiper.”

Tafsir jalalayn

Then We revealed to you, O Muhammad (s), [saying]; `Follow the creed, the religion, of Abraham, a hanf, and he was not of the idolaters'; this [remark] is repeated in order to refute to the claim of the Jews and Christians that they follow his religion.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

ثُمَّ أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ أَنِ اتَّبِعْ مِلَّةَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَنِيفًا

Then, We have sent the revelation to you;"Follow the religion of Ibrahim (he was a) Hanif...

meaning, `because of his perfection, greatness, and the soundness of his Tawhid and his way, We revealed to you, O Seal of the Messengers and Leader of the Prophets,'

أَنِ اتَّبِعْ مِلَّةَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَنِيفًا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ



Follow the religion of Ibrahim (he was a) Hanif and he was not of the idolators.

This is like the Ayah in Surah Al-An`am;

قُلْ إِنَّنِى هَدَانِى رَبِّى إِلَى صِرَطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ دِينًا قِيَمًا مِّلَّةَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَنِيفًا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ

Say;"Truly, my Lord has guided me to a straight path, a right religion, the religion of Ibrahim, (he was a) Hanif and he was not of the idolators." (6;161
