Al-Qur'an Surah An-Nahl Verse 120

An-Nahl [16]: 120 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

اِنَّ اِبْرٰهِيْمَ كَانَ اُمَّةً قَانِتًا لِّلّٰهِ حَنِيْفًاۗ وَلَمْ يَكُ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِيْنَۙ (النحل : ١٦)

Transliteration:

Inna Ibraaheema kaana ummatan qaanital lillaahi Haneefanw wa lam yakuminal mushrikeen (QS. an-Naḥl:120)

English / Sahih Translation:

Indeed, Abraham was a [comprehensive] leader, devoutly obedient to Allah, inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allah. (QS. An-Nahl, ayah 120)

Surely, Ibrāhīm was an Ummah (a whole community in himself), devoted to Allah, a man of pure faith; and he was not among the Mushriks (i.e. those who associate partners with Allah)

That Abraham was a nation/constitution/(set example) (he) was obeying humbly/holding the prayer to God, a submitter/Moslem/Unifier of God, and (he) was not from the sharers/takers of partners (with God).

Tafsir jalalayn

Truly Abraham was a community, a leader (imm), a [good] example, comprising [in his character] all the good traits, obedient to God, a hanf, inclining towards the upright religion, and he was not of the idolaters;
