Al-Qur'an Surah An-Nahl Verse 101

An-Nahl [16]: 101 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَاِذَا بَدَّلْنَآ اٰيَةً مَّكَانَ اٰيَةٍ ۙوَّاللّٰهُ اَعْلَمُ بِمَا يُنَزِّلُ قَالُوْٓا اِنَّمَآ اَنْتَ مُفْتَرٍۗ بَلْ اَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُوْنَ (النحل : ١٦)

wa-idhā
وَإِذَا
And when
baddalnā
بَدَّلْنَآ
We substitute

a Verse

Transliteration:

Wa izaa baddalnaaa Aayatam makaana Aayatinw wal laahu a'lamu bimaa yunazzilu qaalooo innamaa anta muftar; bal aksaruhum laa ya'lamoon (QS. an-Naḥl:101)

English / Sahih Translation:

And when We substitute a verse in place of a verse – and Allah is most knowing of what He sends down – they say, "You, [O Muhammad], are but an inventor [of lies]." But most of them do not know. (QS. An-Nahl, ayah 101)

Whenever We replace a verse with another verse - and Allah knows well what He reveals - they say, “You are but a forger.” The fact rather is that most of them are ignorant.

And Allâh knows very well the need of what He reveals, yet when We replace a revelation with another revelation they say (to you), `You are only a fabricator (of lies).´ The truth is, however, that most of them know nothing.

English Literal

And if We exchanged/replaced/substituted a verse in place (of) a verse , and God is more knowledgeable with what He descends, they said: "But you are a fabricator/cutter and splitter." Rather most of them do not know.

Tafsir jalalayn

And when We exchange a verse in place of a [different] verse, by abrogating it and revealing another, for the welfare of [God's] servants -- and God knows best what He reveals -- they say, that is, the disbelievers [say] to the Prophet (s); `You are just a fabricator', a liar, making it up yourself. Nay, most of them do not know, the true nature of the Qur'n and the benefit [to God's servants] of abrogation.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

The Idolators' Accusation that the Prophet was a Liar since some Ayat were abrogated, and the Refutation of their Claim

Allah says;

وَإِذَا بَدَّلْنَا ايَةً مَّكَانَ ايَةٍ وَاللّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يُنَزِّلُ قَالُواْ

And when We change a verse in place of another - and Allah knows best what He reveals - they (the disbelievers) say;"You (O Muhammad) are but a forger."

Allah tells us of the weak minds of the idolators, and their lack of faith and conviction. He explains that it is impossible for them to have faith when He has decreed that they are doomed. When they saw that some rulings had been changed by being abrogated, they said to the Messenger of Allah;

إِنَّمَا أَنتَ مُفْتَرٍ

You are but a forger,

meaning one who tells lies.

But Allah is the Lord Who does whatever He wills, and rules as He wants.

بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ



Rather, most of them know not.

بَدَّلْنَا ايَةً مَّكَانَ ايَةٍ

And when We change a verse (of the Qur'an) in place of another,

Mujahid said;

this means, "We remove one and put another in its place."

Qatadah said;

this is like the Ayah;

مَا نَنسَخْ مِنْ ءَايَةٍ أَوْ نُنسِهَا

Whatever verse We change (abrogate) or omit (the abrogated)..." (2;106)

Allah said, in response to them
