Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Hijr Verse 54

Al-Hijr [15]: 54 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قَالَ اَبَشَّرْتُمُوْنِيْ عَلٰٓى اَنْ مَّسَّنِيَ الْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُوْنَ (الحجر : ١٥)

"Do you give me glad tidings

عَلَىٰٓ
"Do you give me glad tidings

massaniya
مَّسَّنِىَ
has overtaken me

ٱلْكِبَرُ
old age?
fabima
فَبِمَ
Then about what
tubashirūna
تُبَشِّرُونَ
you give glad tidings?"

Transliteration:

Qaala abashshartumoonee 'alaaa am massaniyal kibaru fabima tubashshiroon (QS. al-Ḥijr:54)

English / Sahih Translation:

He said, "Have you given me good tidings although old age has come upon me? Then of what [wonder] do you inform?" (QS. Al-Hijr, ayah 54)

He said, “Do you give me the good news despite the old age has befallen me? So what good news you are giving to me?”

He said: "Did you announce good news to me on that the old age touched me so with what (do) you announce177good news to me?"

[Ibrahim (Abraham)] said: "Do you give me glad tidings (of a son) when old age has overtaken me? Of what then is your news?"

Tafsir jalalayn

He said, `Do you give me good tidings, of a boy, when old age has befallen me?' (`al an massaniya l-kibaru is a circumstantial qualifier), in other words, despite the fact of its having befallen me? So, of what, thing, do you give me good tidings?' (an interrogative meant to indicate amazement).

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

قَالَ

He said,

meaning he spoke with wonder and astonishment, asking for confirmation, because he was old and his wife was old;

أَبَشَّرْتُمُونِي عَلَى أَن مَّسَّنِيَ الْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ



Do you give me this good news while old age has overtaken me! Of what then is your news about!

They responded by confirming the good news they had brought, good news after good news;

قَالُواْ بَشَّرْنَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ فَلَ تَكُن مِّنَ الْقَانِطِينَ
