Surah Al-Hijr - Word by Word

bismillaahirrahmaanirrahiim
1

الۤرٰ ۗتِلْكَ اٰيٰتُ الْكِتٰبِ وَقُرْاٰنٍ مُّبِيْنٍ ۔ ١

alif-lam-ra
الٓرۚ
Alif Laam Ra
til'ka
تِلْكَ
These
āyātu
ءَايَٰتُ
(are) the Verses
l-kitābi
ٱلْكِتَٰبِ
(of) the Book
waqur'ānin
وَقُرْءَانٍ
and Quran
mubīnin
مُّبِينٍ
clear
Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Quran [i.e., recitation]. (QS. [15] Al-Hijr: 1)
Tafsir

رُبَمَا يَوَدُّ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا لَوْ كَانُوْا مُسْلِمِيْنَ ٢

rubamā
رُّبَمَا
Perhaps
yawaddu
يَوَدُّ
will wish
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
kafarū
كَفَرُوا۟
disbelieved
law
لَوْ
if
kānū
كَانُوا۟
they had been
mus'limīna
مُسْلِمِينَ
Muslims
Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims. (QS. [15] Al-Hijr: 2)
Tafsir

ذَرْهُمْ يَأْكُلُوْا وَيَتَمَتَّعُوْا وَيُلْهِهِمُ الْاَمَلُ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُوْنَ ٣

dharhum
ذَرْهُمْ
Leave them
yakulū
يَأْكُلُوا۟
(to) eat
wayatamattaʿū
وَيَتَمَتَّعُوا۟
and enjoy
wayul'hihimu
وَيُلْهِهِمُ
and diverted them
l-amalu
ٱلْأَمَلُۖ
the hope
fasawfa
فَسَوْفَ
then soon
yaʿlamūna
يَعْلَمُونَ
they will come to know
Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know. (QS. [15] Al-Hijr: 3)
Tafsir
4

وَمَآ اَهْلَكْنَا مِنْ قَرْيَةٍ اِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٌ مَّعْلُوْمٌ ٤

wamā
وَمَآ
And not
ahlaknā
أَهْلَكْنَا
We destroyed
min
مِن
any
qaryatin
قَرْيَةٍ
town
illā
إِلَّا
but
walahā
وَلَهَا
(there was) for it
kitābun
كِتَابٌ
a decree
maʿlūmun
مَّعْلُومٌ
known
And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree. (QS. [15] Al-Hijr: 4)
Tafsir

مَا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ اُمَّةٍ اَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَأْخِرُوْنَ ٥

مَّا
Not
tasbiqu
تَسْبِقُ
(can) advance
min
مِنْ
any
ummatin
أُمَّةٍ
nation
ajalahā
أَجَلَهَا
its term
wamā
وَمَا
and not
yastakhirūna
يَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَ
(can) delay it
No nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter. (QS. [15] Al-Hijr: 5)
Tafsir
6

وَقَالُوْا يٰٓاَيُّهَا الَّذِيْ نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ الذِّكْرُ اِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُوْنٌ ۗ ٦

waqālū
وَقَالُوا۟
And they say
yāayyuhā
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا
"O you
alladhī
ٱلَّذِى
(to) whom
nuzzila
نُزِّلَ
has been sent down
ʿalayhi
عَلَيْهِ
[on him]
l-dhik'ru
ٱلذِّكْرُ
the Reminder
innaka
إِنَّكَ
indeed you
lamajnūnun
لَمَجْنُونٌ
(are) surely mad
And they say, "O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad. (QS. [15] Al-Hijr: 6)

لَوْمَا تَأْتِيْنَا بِالْمَلٰۤىِٕكَةِ اِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الصّٰدِقِيْنَ ٧

Why
مَا
not
tatīnā
تَأْتِينَا
you bring to us
bil-malāikati
بِٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ
the Angels
in
إِن
if
kunta
كُنتَ
you are
mina
مِنَ
of
l-ṣādiqīna
ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ
the truthful?"
Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?" (QS. [15] Al-Hijr: 7)
Tafsir

مَا نُنَزِّلُ الْمَلٰۤىِٕكَةَ اِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوْٓا اِذًا مُّنْظَرِيْنَ ٨

مَا
Not
nunazzilu
نُنَزِّلُ
We send down
l-malāikata
ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ
the Angels
illā
إِلَّا
except
bil-ḥaqi
بِٱلْحَقِّ
with the truth;
wamā
وَمَا
and not
kānū
كَانُوٓا۟
they would be
idhan
إِذًا
then
munẓarīna
مُّنظَرِينَ
given respite
We do not send down the angels except with truth; and they [i.e., the disbelievers] would not then be reprieved. (QS. [15] Al-Hijr: 8)
Tafsir

اِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَاِنَّا لَهٗ لَحٰفِظُوْنَ ٩

innā
إِنَّا
Indeed We
naḥnu
نَحْنُ
We
nazzalnā
نَزَّلْنَا
have sent down
l-dhik'ra
ٱلذِّكْرَ
the Reminder
wa-innā
وَإِنَّا
and indeed We
lahu
لَهُۥ
of it
laḥāfiẓūna
لَحَٰفِظُونَ
(are) surely Guardians
Indeed, it is We who sent down the message [i.e., the Quran], and indeed, We will be its guardian. (QS. [15] Al-Hijr: 9)

وَلَقَدْ اَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ فِيْ شِيَعِ الْاَوَّلِيْنَ ١٠

walaqad
وَلَقَدْ
And certainly
arsalnā
أَرْسَلْنَا
We (had) sent
min
مِن
before you
qablika
قَبْلِكَ
before you
فِى
in
shiyaʿi
شِيَعِ
the sects
l-awalīna
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
(of) the former (people)
And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muhammad], among the sects of the former peoples. (QS. [15] Al-Hijr: 10)
