English / Sahih Translation:

And if you are astonished, [O Muhammad] – then astonishing is their saying, "When we are dust, will we indeed be [brought] into a new creation?" Those are the ones who have disbelieved in their Lord, and those will have shackles upon their necks, and those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally. (QS. Ar-Ra'd, ayah 5)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

If you wonder, then wondrous indeed is their saying, “Is it that, once we are dust, we are to be created anew?” They are those who have disbelieved in their Lord, and they are those who (shall) have shackles around their necks, and they are the people of the Fire. They shall remain there forever.

Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

˹Now,˺ if anything should amaze you ˹O Prophet˺, then it is their question: “When we are reduced to dust, will we really be raised as a new creation?” It is they who have disbelieved in their Lord. It is they who will have shackles around their necks. And it is they who will be the residents of the Fire. They will be there forever.

Ruwwad Translation Center

If you wonder, then wondrous is their saying, “what! When we become dust, will we be created anew?” They are the ones who disbelieve in their Lord, and they are the ones who will have shackles around their necks. Such are the people of the Fire; they will abide therein forever.

A. J. Arberry

If thou wouldst wonder, surely wonderful is their saying, 'What, when we are dust shall we indeed then be raised up again in new creation?' Those are they that disbelieve in their Lord; those -- on their necks are fetters; those shall be the inhabitants of the Fire, therein dwelling forever.

Abdul Haleem

If anything can amaze you [Prophet], then you should surely be amazed at their asking, ‘What? When we become dust, shall we be created anew?’ These are the ones who deny their Lord, who will wear iron collars around their necks and be the inhabitants of the Fire, there to remain.

Abdul Majid Daryabadi

And shouldst thou marvel, then marvellous is their saying: when we have become dust, shall we be in a new creation! ' These are they who disbelieved in their Lord; and these! -- the shackles round their necks; and these shall be the fellows of the Fire as abiders therein.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

If thou dost marvel (at their want of faith), strange is their saying; "When we are (actually) dust, shall we indeed then be in a creation renewed?" They are those who deny their Lord! They are those round whose necks will be yokes (of servitude); they will be Companions of the Fire, to dwell therein (for aye)!

Abul Ala Maududi

And were you to wonder, then wondrous indeed is the saying of those who say: "What! After we have been reduced to dust, shall we be created afresh?" They are the ones who disbelieved in their Lord; they are the ones who shall have shackles around their necks. They shall be the inmates of the Fire, wherein they will abide for ever.

Ahmed Ali

If you are surprised, then astonishing is the speech (of those who say:) "Having turned to dust shall we be raised as a new creation?" They are the ones who deny their Lord, and they will have collars around their necks. They are the inmates of Hell, where they will abide for ever.

Ahmed Raza Khan

And if you are amazed, then indeed the amazement is at their saying that, “Will we, after having turned to dust, be created anew?” They are those who have disbelieved in their Lord; and they are those who will have shackles around their necks; and they are the people of hell; remaining in it forever.

Ali Quli Qarai

If you are to wonder [at anything], then wonderful is their remark, ‘When we have become dust, shall we be [ushered] into a new creation?’ They are the ones who defy their Lord; they shall have iron collars around their necks, they shall be the inhabitants of the Fire, and they shall remain in it [forever].

Ali Ünal

If there is something for you to find strange, how strange their saying is: "What! After we have become dust, will we indeed be (raised up again) in a new creation?" Those are they who disbelieve in their Lord, and around whose necks are fetters (by which they are being dragged into the Fire). They are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein.

They shall be the fellows of the Fire wherein they shall abide.

And if you be astonished, so their saying/opinion and belief (is a) wonderment/astonishment/ surprise: "Is it that if we were dust/earth are we (to be) in (E) (a) new creation ?" Hamid S. Aziz

And on the earth are diverse but neighbouring tracts, gardens of vines and ploughed fields of corn, and palms growing together (from one root) alike or not; they are watered with the same water, yet We distinguish one over the other as food; verily, in these are signs unto a people who have sense (or understanding.)

Hilali & Khan

And if you (O Muhammad SAW) wonder (at these polytheists who deny your message of Islamic Monotheism and have taken besides Allah others for worship who can neither harm nor benefit), then wondrous is their saying: "When we are dust, shall we indeed then be (raised) in a new creation?" They are those who disbelieve in their Lord! They are those who will have iron chains tying their hands to their necks. They will be dwellers of the Fire to abide therein.

Maulana Mohammad Ali

And in the earth are tracts side by side, and gardens of vines, and corn, and palm-trees growing from one root and distinct roots -- they are watered with one water; and We make some of them to excel others in fruit. Surely there are signs in this for a people who understand.

Mohammad Habib Shakir

Tafsir jalalayn

And if you wonder, O Muhammad (s), at the disbelievers denying you, then surely wondrous, [surely] deserving wonder, is their saying, in denial of resurrection; `When we have become dust, shall we indeed then be [raised] in a new creation?', [it is wondrous] because the One Who has the power to originate creation and [to originate] what has been mentioned [above], without any precedent, has [also] the power to restore them [to life] (both hamzas, in both instances [a-idh and a-inn], are pronounced; or [one may] pronounce the first and not pronounce the second, but in both cases inserting an alif or not [inserting it]; one variant reading has the first [a-idh] as the interrogative, and the second one [a-inn] as the predicate, while another variant reading has the [exact] opposite). Those are the ones who disbelieve in their Lord; those -- fetters shall be around their necks; and those, they shall be the inhabitants of the Fire, abiding therein.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Denying Resurrection after Death, is Strange

Allah says to His Messenger Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him,

وَإِن تَعْجَبْ

And if you wonder.

at the rejection of the polytheists who deny Resurrection, even though they witness Allah's signs and evidences that He made in His creation which testify that He is able to do everything. Yet, they admit that Allah originated the creation of all things and brought them into existence after they were nothing.

However, they deny Allah's claim that He will resurrect the world anew, even though they admit to what is more amazing than what they deny and reject.

فَعَجَبٌ قَوْلُهُمْ

then wondrous is their saying;

Therefore, it is amazing that they said,

أَيِذَا كُنَّا تُرَابًا أَيِنَّا لَفِي خَلْقٍ جَدِيدٍ

When we are dust, shall we indeed then be (raised) in a new creation,

It is an obvious fact to every sane and knowledgeable person that creating the heavens and earth is a greater feat than creating men, and that He Who has originated creation is more able to resurrect it anew,

Do they not see that Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth, and was not wearied by their creation, is able to give life to the dead! Yes, He surely is able to do all things. (46;33)

Allah described those who deny Resurrection,

أُوْلَـيِكَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِرَبِّهِمْ

وَأُوْلَيِكَ الَاغْلَلُ فِي أَعْنَاقِهِمْ

They are those who disbelieved in their Lord! They are those who will have iron chains linking their hands to their necks.

They will be dragged in the Fire by these chains,

وَأُوْلَـيِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدونَ

They will be dwellers of the Fire to abide therein forever.

for they will remain in Hell forever and will never escape it or be removed from it
