Surah Ar-Ra'd - Word by Word

(The Thunder)

bismillaahirrahmaanirrahiim
1

الۤمّۤرٰۗ تِلْكَ اٰيٰتُ الْكِتٰبِۗ وَالَّذِيْٓ اُنْزِلَ اِلَيْكَ مِنْ رَّبِّكَ الْحَقُّ وَلٰكِنَّ اَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يُؤْمِنُوْنَ ١

alif-lam-meem-ra
الٓمٓرۚ
Alif Laam Mim Ra
til'ka
تِلْكَ
These
āyātu
ءَايَٰتُ
(are) the Verses
l-kitābi
ٱلْكِتَٰبِۗ
(of) the Book
wa-alladhī
وَٱلَّذِىٓ
And that which
unzila
أُنزِلَ
has been revealed
ilayka
إِلَيْكَ
to you
min
مِن
from
rabbika
رَّبِّكَ
your Lord
l-ḥaqu
ٱلْحَقُّ
(is) the truth
walākinna
وَلَٰكِنَّ
but
akthara
أَكْثَرَ
most
l-nāsi
ٱلنَّاسِ
(of) the mankind
لَا
(do) not
yu'minūna
يُؤْمِنُونَ
believe
Alif, Lam, Meem, Ra. These are the verses of the Book; and what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth, but most of the people do not believe. (QS. [13] Ar-Ra'd: 1)
Tafsir
2

اَللّٰهُ الَّذِيْ رَفَعَ السَّمٰوٰتِ بِغَيْرِ عَمَدٍ تَرَوْنَهَا ثُمَّ اسْتَوٰى عَلَى الْعَرْشِ وَسَخَّرَ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَۗ كُلٌّ يَّجْرِيْ لِاَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّىۗ يُدَبِّرُ الْاَمْرَ يُفَصِّلُ الْاٰيٰتِ لَعَلَّكُمْ بِلِقَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمْ تُوْقِنُوْنَ ٢

al-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
alladhī
ٱلَّذِى
(is) the One Who
rafaʿa
رَفَعَ
raised
l-samāwāti
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
the heavens
bighayri
بِغَيْرِ
without
ʿamadin
عَمَدٍ
pillars
tarawnahā
تَرَوْنَهَاۖ
that you see
thumma
ثُمَّ
then
is'tawā
ٱسْتَوَىٰ
He established
ʿalā
عَلَى
on
l-ʿarshi
ٱلْعَرْشِۖ
the Throne
wasakhara
وَسَخَّرَ
and subjected
l-shamsa
ٱلشَّمْسَ
the sun
wal-qamara
وَٱلْقَمَرَۖ
and the moon
kullun
كُلٌّ
each
yajrī
يَجْرِى
running
li-ajalin
لِأَجَلٍ
for a term
musamman
مُّسَمًّىۚ
appointed
yudabbiru
يُدَبِّرُ
He arranges
l-amra
ٱلْأَمْرَ
the matter;
yufaṣṣilu
يُفَصِّلُ
He details
l-āyāti
ٱلْءَايَٰتِ
the Signs
laʿallakum
لَعَلَّكُم
so that you may
biliqāi
بِلِقَآءِ
in the meeting
rabbikum
رَبِّكُمْ
(with) your Lord
tūqinūna
تُوقِنُونَ
believe with certainty
It is Allah who erected the heavens without pillars that you [can] see; then He established Himself above the Throne and made subject the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. He arranges [each] matter; He details the signs that you may, of the meeting with your Lord, be certain. (QS. [13] Ar-Ra'd: 2)
Tafsir
3

وَهُوَ الَّذِيْ مَدَّ الْاَرْضَ وَجَعَلَ فِيْهَا رَوَاسِيَ وَاَنْهٰرًا ۗوَمِنْ كُلِّ الثَّمَرٰتِ جَعَلَ فِيْهَا زَوْجَيْنِ اثْنَيْنِ يُغْشِى الَّيْلَ النَّهَارَۗ اِنَّ فِيْ ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيٰتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَّتَفَكَّرُوْنَ ٣

wahuwa
وَهُوَ
And He
alladhī
ٱلَّذِى
(is) the One Who
madda
مَدَّ
spread
l-arḍa
ٱلْأَرْضَ
the earth
wajaʿala
وَجَعَلَ
and placed
fīhā
فِيهَا
in it
rawāsiya
رَوَٰسِىَ
firm mountains
wa-anhāran
وَأَنْهَٰرًاۖ
and rivers
wamin
وَمِن
and from
kulli
كُلِّ
all
l-thamarāti
ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ
(of) the fruits
jaʿala
جَعَلَ
He made
fīhā
فِيهَا
in it
zawjayni
زَوْجَيْنِ
pairs
ith'nayni
ٱثْنَيْنِۖ
two
yugh'shī
يُغْشِى
He covers
al-layla
ٱلَّيْلَ
the night
l-nahāra
ٱلنَّهَارَۚ
(with) the day
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
فِى
in
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
that
laāyātin
لَءَايَٰتٍ
surely (are) Signs
liqawmin
لِّقَوْمٍ
for a people
yatafakkarūna
يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
who ponder
And it is He who spread the earth and placed therein firmly set mountains and rivers; and from all of the fruits He made therein two mates; He causes the night to cover the day. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought. (QS. [13] Ar-Ra'd: 3)
Tafsir
4

وَفِى الْاَرْضِ قِطَعٌ مُّتَجٰوِرٰتٌ وَّجَنّٰتٌ مِّنْ اَعْنَابٍ وَّزَرْعٌ وَّنَخِيْلٌ صِنْوَانٌ وَّغَيْرُ صِنْوَانٍ يُّسْقٰى بِمَاۤءٍ وَّاحِدٍۙ وَّنُفَضِّلُ بَعْضَهَا عَلٰى بَعْضٍ فِى الْاُكُلِۗ اِنَّ فِيْ ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيٰتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَّعْقِلُوْنَ ٤

wafī
وَفِى
And in
l-arḍi
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
qiṭaʿun
قِطَعٌ
are tracks
mutajāwirātun
مُّتَجَٰوِرَٰتٌ
neighboring
wajannātun
وَجَنَّٰتٌ
and gardens
min
مِّنْ
of
aʿnābin
أَعْنَٰبٍ
grapevines
wazarʿun
وَزَرْعٌ
and crops
wanakhīlun
وَنَخِيلٌ
and date-palms
ṣin'wānun
صِنْوَانٌ
trees (growing) from a single root
waghayru
وَغَيْرُ
and not
ṣin'wānin
صِنْوَانٍ
trees (growing) from a single root
yus'qā
يُسْقَىٰ
watered
bimāin
بِمَآءٍ
with water
wāḥidin
وَٰحِدٍ
one
wanufaḍḍilu
وَنُفَضِّلُ
but We cause to exceed
baʿḍahā
بَعْضَهَا
some of them
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
over
baʿḍin
بَعْضٍ
others
فِى
in
l-ukuli
ٱلْأُكُلِۚ
the fruit
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
فِى
in
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
that
laāyātin
لَءَايَٰتٍ
surely (are) Signs
liqawmin
لِّقَوْمٍ
for a people
yaʿqilūna
يَعْقِلُونَ
who use reason
And within the land are neighboring plots and gardens of grapevines and crops and palm trees, [growing] several from a root or otherwise, watered with one water; but We make some of them exceed others in [quality of] fruit. Indeed in that are signs for a people who reason. (QS. [13] Ar-Ra'd: 4)
Tafsir
5

۞ وَاِنْ تَعْجَبْ فَعَجَبٌ قَوْلُهُمْ ءَاِذَا كُنَّا تُرَابًا ءَاِنَّا لَفِيْ خَلْقٍ جَدِيْدٍ ەۗ اُولٰۤىِٕكَ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا بِرَبِّهِمْۚ وَاُولٰۤىِٕكَ الْاَغْلٰلُ فِيْٓ اَعْنَاقِهِمْۚ وَاُولٰۤىِٕكَ اَصْحٰبُ النَّارِۚ هُمْ فِيْهَا خٰلِدُوْنَ ٥

wa-in
وَإِن
And if
taʿjab
تَعْجَبْ
you (are) astonished
faʿajabun
فَعَجَبٌ
then astonishing
qawluhum
قَوْلُهُمْ
(is) their saying
a-idhā
أَءِذَا
"When
kunnā
كُنَّا
we are
turāban
تُرَٰبًا
dust
a-innā
أَءِنَّا
will we
lafī
لَفِى
(be) indeed in
khalqin
خَلْقٍ
a creation
jadīdin
جَدِيدٍۗ
new?"
ulāika
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ
Those
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
(are) the ones who
kafarū
كَفَرُوا۟
disbelieved
birabbihim
بِرَبِّهِمْۖ
in their Lord
wa-ulāika
وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ
and those
l-aghlālu
ٱلْأَغْلَٰلُ
the iron chains
فِىٓ
(will be) in
aʿnāqihim
أَعْنَاقِهِمْۖ
their necks
wa-ulāika
وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ
those
aṣḥābu
أَصْحَٰبُ
(are the) companions
l-nāri
ٱلنَّارِۖ
(of) the Fire
hum
هُمْ
they
fīhā
فِيهَا
in it
khālidūna
خَٰلِدُونَ
(will) abide forever
And if you are astonished, [O Muhammad] – then astonishing is their saying, "When we are dust, will we indeed be [brought] into a new creation?" Those are the ones who have disbelieved in their Lord, and those will have shackles upon their necks, and those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally. (QS. [13] Ar-Ra'd: 5)
Tafsir
6

وَيَسْتَعْجِلُوْنَكَ بِالسَّيِّئَةِ قَبْلَ الْحَسَنَةِ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمُ الْمَثُلٰتُۗ وَاِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَذُوْ مَغْفِرَةٍ لِّلنَّاسِ عَلٰى ظُلْمِهِمْۚ وَاِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَشَدِيْدُ الْعِقَابِ ٦

wayastaʿjilūnaka
وَيَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَ
And they ask you to hasten
bil-sayi-ati
بِٱلسَّيِّئَةِ
the evil
qabla
قَبْلَ
before
l-ḥasanati
ٱلْحَسَنَةِ
the good
waqad
وَقَدْ
and verily
khalat
خَلَتْ
has occurred
min
مِن
from
qablihimu
قَبْلِهِمُ
before them
l-mathulātu
ٱلْمَثُلَٰتُۗ
[the] similar punishments
wa-inna
وَإِنَّ
And indeed
rabbaka
رَبَّكَ
your Lord
ladhū
لَذُو
(is) full
maghfiratin
مَغْفِرَةٍ
(of) forgiveness
lilnnāsi
لِّلنَّاسِ
for mankind
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
for
ẓul'mihim
ظُلْمِهِمْۖ
their wrongdoing
wa-inna
وَإِنَّ
and indeed
rabbaka
رَبَّكَ
your Lord
lashadīdu
لَشَدِيدُ
(is) severe
l-ʿiqābi
ٱلْعِقَابِ
(in) the penalty
They impatiently urge you to bring about evil before good, while there has already occurred before them similar punishments [to what they demand]. And indeed, your Lord is the possessor of forgiveness for the people despite their wrongdoing, and indeed, your Lord is severe in penalty. (QS. [13] Ar-Ra'd: 6)
Tafsir
7

وَيَقُوْلُ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا لَوْلَآ اُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اٰيَةٌ مِّنْ رَّبِّهٖۗ اِنَّمَآ اَنْتَ مُنْذِرٌ وَّلِكُلِّ قَوْمٍ هَادٍ ࣖ ٧

wayaqūlu
وَيَقُولُ
And say
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
kafarū
كَفَرُوا۟
disbelieved
lawlā
لَوْلَآ
"Why not
unzila
أُنزِلَ
has been sent down
ʿalayhi
عَلَيْهِ
to him
āyatun
ءَايَةٌ
a sign
min
مِّن
from
rabbihi
رَّبِّهِۦٓۗ
his Lord?"
innamā
إِنَّمَآ
Only
anta
أَنتَ
you
mundhirun
مُنذِرٌۖ
(are) a warner
walikulli
وَلِكُلِّ
and for every
qawmin
قَوْمٍ
people
hādin
هَادٍ
(is) a guide
And those who disbelieved say, "Why has a sign not been sent down to him from his Lord?" You are only a warner, and for every people is a guide. (QS. [13] Ar-Ra'd: 7)
Tafsir
8

اَللّٰهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَحْمِلُ كُلُّ اُنْثٰى وَمَا تَغِيْضُ الْاَرْحَامُ وَمَا تَزْدَادُ ۗوَكُلُّ شَيْءٍ عِنْدَهٗ بِمِقْدَارٍ ٨

al-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
yaʿlamu
يَعْلَمُ
knows
مَا
what
taḥmilu
تَحْمِلُ
carries
kullu
كُلُّ
every
unthā
أُنثَىٰ
female
wamā
وَمَا
and what
taghīḍu
تَغِيضُ
fall short
l-arḥāmu
ٱلْأَرْحَامُ
the womb
wamā
وَمَا
and what
tazdādu
تَزْدَادُۖ
they exceed
wakullu
وَكُلُّ
And every
shayin
شَىْءٍ
thing
ʿindahu
عِندَهُۥ
with Him
bimiq'dārin
بِمِقْدَارٍ
(is) in due proportion
Allah knows what every female carries and what the wombs lose [prematurely] or exceed. And everything with Him is by due measure. (QS. [13] Ar-Ra'd: 8)
Tafsir
9

عٰلِمُ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ الْكَبِيْرُ الْمُتَعَالِ ٩

ʿālimu
عَٰلِمُ
Knower
l-ghaybi
ٱلْغَيْبِ
(of) the unseen
wal-shahādati
وَٱلشَّهَٰدَةِ
and the witnessed
l-kabīru
ٱلْكَبِيرُ
the Most Great
l-mutaʿāli
ٱلْمُتَعَالِ
the Most High
[He is] Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Grand, the Exalted. (QS. [13] Ar-Ra'd: 9)
Tafsir
10

سَوَاۤءٌ مِّنْكُمْ مَّنْ اَسَرَّ الْقَوْلَ وَمَنْ جَهَرَ بِهٖ وَمَنْ هُوَ مُسْتَخْفٍۢ بِالَّيْلِ وَسَارِبٌۢ بِالنَّهَارِ ١٠

sawāon
سَوَآءٌ
(It is) same (to Him)
minkum
مِّنكُم
[of you]
man
مَّنْ
(one) who
asarra
أَسَرَّ
conceals
l-qawla
ٱلْقَوْلَ
the speech
waman
وَمَن
or (one) who
jahara
جَهَرَ
publicizes
bihi
بِهِۦ
it
waman
وَمَنْ
and (one) who
huwa
هُوَ
[he]
mus'takhfin
مُسْتَخْفٍۭ
(is) hidden
bi-al-layli
بِٱلَّيْلِ
by night
wasāribun
وَسَارِبٌۢ
or goes freely
bil-nahāri
بِٱلنَّهَارِ
by day
It is the same [to Him] concerning you whether one conceals [his] speech or publicizes it and whether one is hidden by night or conspicuous [among others] by day. (QS. [13] Ar-Ra'd: 10)
Tafsir
