Al-Qur'an Surah Yusuf Verse 91

Yusuf [12]: 91 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قَالُوْا تَاللّٰهِ لَقَدْ اٰثَرَكَ اللّٰهُ عَلَيْنَا وَاِنْ كُنَّا لَخٰطِـِٕيْنَ (يوسف : ١٢)

They said
tal-lahi
تَٱللَّهِ
"By Allah
laqad
لَقَدْ
certainly
ātharaka
ءَاثَرَكَ
Allah has preferred you
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah has preferred you
ʿalaynā
عَلَيْنَا
over us
wa-in
وَإِن
and indeed
kunnā
كُنَّا
we have been
lakhāṭiīna
لَخَٰطِـِٔينَ
sinners"

Transliteration:

Qaaloo tallaahi laqad aasarakal laahu 'alainaa wa in kunnaa lakhaati'een (QS. Yūsuf:91)

English / Sahih Translation:

They said, "By Allah, certainly has Allah preferred you over us, and indeed, we have been sinners." (QS. Yusuf, ayah 91)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

They said, “We swear by Allah, indeed Allah has given to you preference over us, and we were guilty in fact.”

They admitted, “By Allah! Allah has truly preferred you over us, and we have surely been sinful.”

They said, “By Allah, Allah has favored you over us, and we have surely been sinful.”

They said; "By Allah! indeed has Allah preferred thee above us, and we certainly have been guilty of sin!"

They said: "We swear by Allah! Indeed Allah has chosen you in preference to us and we were truly guilty."

They said: "By God, God has favoured you above us, for we have indeed been sinners."

Ahmed Raza Khan

They said, “By Allah, undoubtedly Allah has given you superiority over us, and we were indeed guilty.”

Ali Quli Qarai

They said, ‘By Allah, Allah has certainly preferred you over us, and we have indeed been erring.’

Ali Ünal

"By God," they responded, "God has indeed preferred you above us, and certainly we were sinful."

Amatul Rahman Omar

They said, `By Allâh, Allâh has surely exalted you above us and we have indeed been guilty.´

English Literal

They said: "By God, God had preferred/chosen you over us and that truly we were sinners (E)."

Faridul Haque

They said, "By Allah, undoubtedly Allah has given you superiority over us, and we were indeed guilty."

Hamid S. Aziz

They said, "Are you then indeed Joseph?" He said, "I am Joseph, and this is my brother; Allah has been gracious towards us. Verily, whoever fears Allah (repulses evil or is righteous) and is patient (endures) - verily, Allah wastes not the hire of those who do right (or good)."

Hilali & Khan

They said: "By Allah! Indeed Allah has preferred you above us, and we certainly have been sinners."

Maulana Mohammad Ali

They said: Art thou indeed Joseph? He said: I am Joseph and this is my brother; Allah has indeed been gracious to us. Surely he who keeps his duty and is patient -- Allah never wastes the reward of the doers of good.

They said: By Allah! now has Allah certainly chosen you over us, and we were certainly sinners.

They said: By Allah, verily Allah hath preferred thee above us, and we were indeed sinful.

They said: "By Allah! Indeed Allah has preferred you above us, and we certainly have been sinners."

[The brothers] said, "By God! Most certainly God has raised you high above us, and we have indeed been guilty!"

They said, “By God, God has preferred you over us. We were definitely in the wrong.”

Tafsir jalalayn

They said, `By God, truly God has preferred you over us, with kingship and in other ways, and indeed we (wa-in; in is softened, in other words [it is understood as] inn, `indeed we') have been erring', sinful towards you and treated you disgracefully.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

قَالُواْ تَاللّهِ لَقَدْ اثَرَكَ اللّهُ عَلَيْنَا

"Verily, he who has Taqwa, and is patient, then surely, Allah makes not the reward of the good doers to be lost."

They said;"By Allah! Indeed Allah has preferred you above us."

They affirmed Yusuf's virtue above them, being blessed with beauty, conduct, richness, kingship, authority and, above all, Prophethood.

وَإِن كُنَّا لَخَاطِيِينَ



and we certainly have been sinners."

They admitted their error and acknowledged that they made a mistake against him
