Al-Qur'an Surah Yusuf Verse 79

Yusuf [12]: 79 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قَالَ مَعَاذَ اللّٰهِ اَنْ نَّأْخُذَ اِلَّا مَنْ وَّجَدْنَا مَتَاعَنَا عِنْدَهٗٓ ۙاِنَّآ اِذًا لَّظٰلِمُوْنَ ࣖ (يوسف : ١٢)

عِندَهُۥٓ

إِنَّآ
Indeed, we
idhan
إِذًا
then
laẓālimūna
لَّظَٰلِمُونَ
surely (would be) wrongdoers"

Transliteration:

Qaala ma'aazal laahi an naakhuza illaa manw wajadnaa mataa'anaa 'indahoo innaaa izal lazaalimoon (QS. Yūsuf:79)

English / Sahih Translation:

He said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allah [to prevent] that we take except him with whom we found our possession. Indeed, we would then be unjust." (QS. Yusuf, ayah 79)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

He said, “We seek Allah’s refuge from keeping anyone other than him with whom we have found our thing, otherwise we shall be unjust.”

Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Joseph responded, “Allah forbid that we should take other than the one with whom we found our property. Otherwise, we would surely be unjust.”

Joseph said, “Allah forbid that we should take except the one with whom we found our property, for we would then be unjust.”

He said, 'God forbid that we should take any other but him in whose possession we found the goods; for if we did so, we would be evildoers.'

He replied, ‘God forbid that we should take anyone other than the person on whom we found our property: that would be unjust of us.’

He said: Allah forbid that we should take anyone but him with whom we found our stuff; verily then we should be the wrong-doers.

He said; "Allah forbid that we take other than him with whom we found our property; indeed (if we did so), we should be acting wrongfully.

Abul Ala Maududi

Joseph said: "Allah forbid that we should seize any except him with whom we found our good. Were we to do so, we would surely be one of the wrong-doers."

Ahmed Ali

"May God forgive us," he said, "if we hold any one but him with whom we found our property, or else we would be unjust."

Ahmed Raza Khan

He said, “The refuge of Allah from that we should take anyone except him with whom our property was found – we would then surely be unjust.”

Ali Quli Qarai

He said, ‘God forbid that we should detain anyone except him with whom we found our wares, for then we would indeed be wrongdoers.’

He said: "God forbid that we take any other but him with whom we found our merchandise; (if we did otherwise) then surely we (too) would be wrongdoers."

He said, `God forbid that we take anyone except the one with whom we found our property, for (otherwise) we would, of course, be unjust.´

English Literal

He said: "I seek protection (of) God, that we take except whom we found our belongings/effects/goods at him then we are unjust/oppressive (E) ."

He said, "The refuge of Allah from that we should take anyone except him with whom our property was found - we would then surely be unjust."

Hamid S. Aziz

They said, "O exalted one (ruler, minister)! Verily, he has a father, aged and venerable (who will grieve). Take then one of us instead of him; verily, we can see that you are of those who do good."

Hilali & Khan

He said: "Allah forbid, that we should take anyone but him with whom we found our property. Indeed (if we did so), we should be Zalimun (wrong-doers)."

Maulana Mohammad Ali

They said: O chief, he has a father, a very old man, so take one of us in his place. Surely we see thee to be of the doers of good.

Mohammad Habib Shakir

He said: Allah protect us that we should seize other than him with whom we found our property, for then most surely we would be unjust.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

He said: Allah forbid that we should seize save him with whom we found our property; then truly we should be wrong-doers.

He replied, "God forbid! How could I take someone in place of the thief? In doing so I would be committing injustice."

He replied: 'Allah forbid that we should seize any but he with whom our property was found, for then we should be harmdoers'

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

He said: "Allah forbid, that we should take anyone but him with whom we found our property. Indeed (if we did so), we should be wrongdoers."

Wahiduddin Khan

He replied, "God forbid that we should take anyone other than the person on whom we found our property. In that case, we would clearly be wrongdoers."

Talal Itani

He said, “God forbid that we should arrest anyone except him in whose possession we found our property; for then we would be unjust.”

Tafsir jalalayn

He said, `God forbid (ma`dha'Llhi, [lit.] `refuge is with God', is in the accusative because it is a verbal noun, the verb having been omitted and placed in a genitive annexation with its direct object, in other words, [understand it as] na`dhu bi'Llhi, `we seek refuge with God') that we should take anyone save him with whom we found our property -- he did not say `[save] him who stole [our property]', being careful not to lie; for then truly -- if we were to take anyone other than him -- we would be evildoers'.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

قَالَ مَعَاذَ اللّهِ أَن نَّأْخُذَ إِلاَّ مَن وَجَدْنَا مَتَاعَنَا عِندَهُ

He said;"Allah forbid, that we should take anyone but him with whom we found our property...",

according to the judgement that you gave for his punishment,

إِنَّـا إِذًا لَّظَالِمُونَ



Indeed, we should be wrongdoers.

if we take an innocent man instead of the guilty man.
