Yusuf [12]: 66 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قَالَ لَنْ اُرْسِلَهٗ مَعَكُمْ حَتّٰى تُؤْتُوْنِ مَوْثِقًا مِّنَ اللّٰهِ لَتَأْتُنَّنِيْ بِهٖٓ اِلَّآ اَنْ يُّحَاطَ بِكُمْۚ فَلَمَّآ اٰتَوْهُ مَوْثِقَهُمْ قَالَ اللّٰهُ عَلٰى مَا نَقُوْلُ وَكِيْلٌ (يوسف : ١٢)

you are surrounded"

فَلَمَّآ
And when
ātawhu
ءَاتَوْهُ
they had given him
mawthiqahum
مَوْثِقَهُمْ
their promise

قَالَ

"Allah

عَلَىٰ
over
مَا
what
naqūlu
نَقُولُ
we say
wakīlun
وَكِيلٌ
(is) a Guardian"

Transliteration:

Qaala lan ursilahoo ma'akum hattaa tu'tooni mawsiqam minal laahis lataa tunnanee biheee illaaa nay yuhaata bikum falammaaa aatawhu mawsiqahum qaalal laahu 'alaa maa naqoolu Wakeel (QS. Yūsuf:66)

English / Sahih Translation:

[Jacob] said, "Never will I send him with you until you give me a promise [i.e., oath] by Allah that you will bring him [back] to me, unless you should be surrounded [i.e., overcome by enemies]." And when they had given their promise, he said, "Allah, over what we say, is Entrusted." (QS. Yusuf, ayah 66)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

He said, “I shall never send him with you until you give me a pledge in the name of Allah that you will definitely bring him back to me, unless you are overpowered (by circumstances).” So, when they gave him their pledge, he said, “Allah is watchful over what we say.”

Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Jacob insisted, “I will not send him with you until you give me a solemn oath by Allah that you will certainly bring him back to me, unless you are totally overpowered.” Then after they had given him their oaths, he concluded, “Allah is a Witness to what we have said.”

Ruwwad Translation Center

He said, “I will never send him with you unless you give me a pledge by Allah that you will surely bring him back to me, unless you are completely overpowered.” Then when they gave him their pledge, he said, “Allah is Witness to what we say.”

A. J. Arberry

He said, 'Never will I send him with you until you bring me a solemn pledge by God that you will surely bring him back to me unless it be that you are encompassed.' When they had brought him their solemn pledge he said, 'God shall be Guardian over what we say.'

Abdul Haleem

He said, ‘I will never send him with you, not unless you swear by God that you will bring him back to me if that is humanly possible.’ Then, when they had given him their pledge, he said, ‘Our words are entrusted to God.’

Abdul Majid Daryabadi

He said: I will by no means send him with you until ye give me an assurance by Allah that ye will bring him back to me, unless it be that ye are encompassed. Then when they gave him their assurance, he said: Allah is over that which we have said Warden.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

(Jacob) said; "Never will I send him with you until ye swear a solemn oath to me, in Allah's name, that ye will be sure to bring him back to me unless ye are yourselves hemmed in (and made powerless). And when they had sworn their solemn oath, he said; "Over all that we say, be Allah the witness and guardian!"

Abul Ala Maududi

Their father said: "I shall never send him with you until you give me a solemn promise in the name of Allah that you will bring him back to me, unless you yourselves are surrounded." Then after they had given him their solemn promise, he said. "Allah watches over what we have said."

Ahmed Ali

He said: "I will never send him with you until you swear by God that you will bring him back to me, unless all of you are overtaken (by misfortune)." When they had given their promise, he said: "God is witness to our conversation."

Ahmed Raza Khan

He said, “I shall never send him with you until you give me an oath upon Allah that you will bring him back to me, unless you are surrounded”; and (recall) when they gave him their oath that “Allah’s guarantee is upon what we say.” (* He knew that Bin Yamin would be restrained.)

Ali Quli Qarai

He said, ‘I will not let him go with you until you give me a [solemn] pledge by Allah that you will surely bring him back to me, unless you are made to perish.’ When they had given him their [solemn] pledge, he said, ‘Allah is witness over what we say.’

Ali Ünal

He said: "Never will I send him with you until you give me a solemn pledge in God’s Name that you will indeed bring him back to me, unless you are (in some insurmountable way) overwhelmed. Then, when they gave him their solemn pledge, he said: "God is witness to and watcher over all that we say (and only on Him can we rely to fulfill our pledges)."

Amatul Rahman Omar

He said, `Never will I send him with you until you give me a solemn pledge in the name of Allâh that you shall surely bring him to me unless it be that you yourselves are beset with difficult circumstances.´ When they had given him their solemn pledge he said, `Allâh shall be Guardian over what we have agreed.´

English Literal

He said: "I will never/not send him with you until you give me a promise/covenant from God to bring him to me (E) except that be (except if you are) surrounded/maneuvered to outsmart with you." So when they gave him their promise/covenant, he said: "God (is) on what we say (a) guardian/trustee ."

Faridul Haque

He said, "I shall never send him with you until you give me an oath upon Allah that you will bring him back to me, unless you are surrounded"; and (recall) when they gave him their oath that "Allah’s guarantee is upon what we say." (* He knew that Bin Yamin would be restrained.)

Hamid S. Aziz

And when they opened their packs they found their merchandise restored to them. Said they, "O our father! What more can we crave? Here are our goods restored to us. We shall get provisions for our folk, and we shall guard our brother, and shall have an additional camel load of provisions. This is but a small measure (compared to what we can obtain or to the Egyptian Store-house)."

Hilali & Khan

He [Ya'qub (Jacob)] said: "I will not send him with you until you swear a solemn oath to me in Allah's Name, that you will bring him back to me unless you are yourselves surrounded (by enemies, etc.)," And when they had sworn their solemn oath, he said: "Allah is the Witness over what we have said."

Maulana Mohammad Ali

And when they opened their goods, they found their money returned to them. They said: O our father, what (more) can we desire? This is our property returned to us, and we shall bring corn for our family and guard our brother, and have in addition the measure of a camel-load. This is an easy measure.

Mohammad Habib Shakir

He said: I will by no means send him with you until you give me a firm covenant in Allah's name that you will most certainly bring him back to me, unless you are completely surrounded. And when they gave him their covenant, he said: Allah is the One in Whom trust is placed as regards what we say.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

He said: I will not send him with you till ye give me an undertaking in the name of Allah that ye will bring him back to me, unless ye are surrounded. And when they gave him their undertaking he said: Allah is the Warden over what we say.

Muhammad Sarwar

(Jacob) said, "I shall not send him with you until you solemnly promise me before God to return him to me unless you are prevented from doing so." When they gave their promise, he said, "God is the Witness of what we have said".

Qaribullah & Darwish

He replied: 'I will never send him with you until you swear by Allah that you will bring him back to me, unless you are prevented' And when they had given him their oath, he said: 'Allah is the Guardian of what we say'

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

He [Ya`qub] said: "I will not send him with you until you swear a solemn oath to me in Allah's Name, that you will bring him back to me unless you are yourselves surrounded (by enemies)," And when they had sworn their solemn oath, he said: "Allah is the Witness to what we have said."

Wahiduddin Khan

He [Jacob] said, "I will never send him with you until you give me a solemn pledge, before God, that you will indeed bring him back to me, unless you yourselves are trapped [in a compulsive situation]." And when they had given him their solemn pledge, [Jacob] said, "God shall be witness to all that we say."

Talal Itani

He said, “I will not send him with you, unless you give me a pledge before God that you will bring him back to me, unless you get trapped.” And when they gave him their pledge, he said, “God is witness to what we say.”

Tafsir jalalayn

He said, `I will not send him with you until you give me a [solemn] pledge, a covenant, in the name of God, by your swearing an oath, that assuredly you will bring him back to me, unless you are besieged', such that you die, or are overwhelmed and thus unable to bring him back. They agreed to this. And when they gave him their [solemn] pledge, to this effect, he said, `God shall be Guardian, Witness, over what we say', we and you. Thus he sent him with them.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

قَالَ لَنْ أُرْسِلَهُ مَعَكُمْ حَتَّى تُوْتُونِ مَوْثِقًا مِّنَ اللّهِ

He (Yaqub (Jacob)) said;"I will not send him with you until you swear a solemn oath to me in Allah's Name..."),

until you swear by Allah with the strongest oath,

لَتَأْتُنَّنِي بِهِ إِلاَّ أَن يُحَاطَ بِكُمْ

that you will bring him back to me unless you are yourselves surrounded (by enemies),

unless you were all overwhelmed and were unable to rescue him,

فَلَمَّا اتَوْهُ مَوْثِقَهُمْ

And when they had sworn their solemn oath,

he affirmed it further, saying,

قَالَ اللّهُ عَلَى مَا نَقُولُ وَكِيلٌ



he said;"Allah is the Witness to what we have said."

Ibn Ishaq commented,

"Yaqub did that because he had no choice but to send them to bring necessary food supplies for their survival. So he sent Binyamin with them.
