Al-Qur'an Surah Yusuf Verse 55

Yusuf [12]: 55 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قَالَ اجْعَلْنِيْ عَلٰى خَزَاۤىِٕنِ الْاَرْضِۚ اِنِّيْ حَفِيْظٌ عَلِيْمٌ (يوسف : ١٢)

Transliteration:

Qaalaj 'alnee 'alaa khazaaa'inil ardi innee hafeezun 'aleem (QS. Yūsuf:55)

English / Sahih Translation:

[Joseph] said, "Appoint me over the storehouses of the land. Indeed, I will be a knowing guardian." (QS. Yusuf, ayah 55)

He said, “Appoint me to (supervise) the treasures of the land. I am indeed a knowledgeable keeper.”

English Literal

He said: "Make/put me on the land`s/Earth`s safe`s/storages (treasures), that I am (an) honest protector/guard knowledgeable."

And the king said, "Bring him (Joseph) to me. I will give him a special position with myself." And when he had spoken with him he said, "Verily, to-day you are with us in a well established place of trust."

[Yusuf (Joseph)] said: "Set me over the storehouses of the land; I will indeed guard them with full knowledge" (as a minister of finance in Egypt, in place of Al-'Aziz who was dead at that time).

Tafsir jalalayn

He, Joseph, said, `Place me in charge of the storehouses of the land, the land of Egypt. I am indeed a skilled custodian', one worthy of custodianship thereof, and knowledgeable in such affairs -- it is also said [that he meant]; [I am indeed] a [competent] scribe and accountant.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

قَالَ اجْعَلْنِي عَلَى خَزَايِنِ الَارْضِ إِنِّي حَفِيظٌ عَلِيمٌ
(Yusuf) said;"Set me over the storehouses of the land; I will indeed guard them with full knowledge."

Yusuf praised himself, for this is allowed when one's abilities are unknown and there is a need to do so. He said that he is,
حَفِيظٌ
(Hafiz), an honest guard,
عَلِيمٌ
(`Alim), having knowledge and wisdom about the job he is to be entrusted with.

Prophet Yusuf asked the king to appoint him as minister of finance for the land, responsible for the harvest storehouses, in which they would collect produce for the years of drought which he told them will come. He wanted to be the guard, so that he could dispense the harvest in the wisest, best and most beneficial way.

The king accepted Yusuf's offer, for he was eager to draw Yusuf close to him and to honor him
